You & I

Chapter One

"Yes Papa, I just sat in the aircraft, yes, the flight arrived an hour late and now its delayed even more cause a passenger hasn't yet turned up, very irritating. What? Yeah yeah don't worry, I know, I won't have that Chinese soup. Don't want another food poisoning! Yep, I will call you when I land in Mumbai. Bye."

With that, Khushi Gupta ended the phone call with her father. No sooner did she do that, her phone buzzed again. This time, it was her mother who had called. Khushi answered that call too.

"Hey Ma, I just sat in the aircraft, the flight arrived an hour late and now its delayed even more cause a passenger hasn't yet turned up. How do you know? I...guess so. Maybe you're right, this late passenger, if he plans to show up, would fill in the vacant seat next to me. Ma! You can't be serious on this! What if this passenger turns out to be a bald 60 year old man? Do you want to see me married to him in future?"

Khushi then giggled at something that her mother said, "Ma, I can never stop your line of exaggerated thoughts. I will call you once I land in Mumbai. Can't wait to see you now!"

With that, Khushi Gupta ended the phone call with her mother. She then glanced at her wristwatch. The time didn't enthuse her at all.

***

"This is the final boarding call for Arnav Raizada booked on flight AI6537 to Mumbai. Please proceed to Gate No 19 immediately. "

That announcement in Delhi airport caused Arnav Raizada to panic.

"Shit! Can't miss this!!" he told himself as he heaved his back over his shoulder and ran faster than he was previously running.

Eye witnesses at the airport saw the handsome young man dashing across the airport like a gust of wind. Arnav Riazada heaved a sigh of relief when Gate No 19 was a stone throw away.

***

Meanwhile, inside AI6537, Khushi Gupta glanced at her wristwatch, for what she would call, the nth time and frowned even harder.

"If I am to miss the meeting with this prospective client today, this late passenger better be a good looking guy worth missing anything out for." She warned her destiny.

And in a matter of moments, Khushi knew her destiny had given in to her threats when she saw this drop dead gorgeous young man in faded jeans and black swag shirt approaching her seat while trying to locate his own seat.

Khushi was sure her pupils had perhaps dilated as she kept on staring at him. His tall frame, though veiled with clothes, made it evident that he had a perfect body any woman would want to feel against her. Doesn't matter whether he wants to convey it or not but his dark black eyes spelt sensuality to any girl who would stare. The alluring shape of his lips could easily make him the best kisser ever and his jawline, that had a tinge of facial hair, gave him a raw & intense look. His black hair that fell slightly over his forehead complimented his attractive features.

Inspite of his inebriating sex appeal, anyone could make out that he was a gentle & sweet natured guy.

He was a man to be loved, not lusted on. But sadly, Khushi didn't know love. Hence, she felt the other L'...

Arnav figured out that his seat was next to the girl who had been staring at him with a lot of interest. And even he couldn't resist looking at her; she was very beautiful what with her brown expressive hazel eyes, shoulder length silk hair and light pink gloss lips. Sparks were flying from both ends. Arnav was delighted that she was seated next to him because most of the times, whenever he travelled, he always got a seat next to a 50 something man or woman, snoring their way to glory!

All the passengers were seated. The air hostesses, the pilot and the other cabin crew members were at their correct places. Flight A16537 finally took off on the "fascinating" journey to Mumbai. Fascinating only for two particular passengers in the aircraft...

"Well, I believe the most interesting stories are born during a flight. And I can be sure of that when it comes to You & I." Arnav flirted, staring the conversation.

"My mum believes that too. And I agree with you, it could be true in our case." Khushi smiled huskily.

"Arnav Raizada here." he extended his hand.

"Khushi Gupta." she shook hands with him.

"Your name is beautiful. You are beautiful." he said in a velvety voice.

"In that case, I can't decide whether your name is sexier or you!" she responded in the same manner.

Arnav smiled playfully.

"So do you live in Delhi?" he asked.

"Nope. Had come for work. I live in Mumbai. And you?"

"I live in Mumbai too! We ought to have come across each other before, in the city!"

"Well, Mumbai is big. And highly populated. So even if we were in the same place anytime, there may have been thousands of people between us." she joked.

"Trust me, if you would have been in the same place as I was, there's no way I wouldn't have noticed you. You're not the person who I would want to miss, no matter the crowd." he said with a charming smile.

That enthralled Khushi. This guy sure knows how to be irresistible.

"You know, actually, I have the exact same words for you!" she said.

"But I don't hold any regrets of not meeting you before as we have met now & are having a wonderful time here." he said.

"And I suppose we would be meeting a lot many times in Mumbai for coffee, dinners..."

"We really do think on similar lines." said Arnav, "What work do you do?"

"If we're getting to know each other, I guess a coffee shop would be a best place to start with." she said coyly.

"If I get to know something about you now, I might be able to do something special for you when we meet next time at a coffee shop!" he responded in a deep n husky voice, leaning towards her.

Khushi bet her heart missed a beat with that gesture of his.

"Well, to begin with, I love my work. It fills me with pride and satisfaction. It is something which I'm very passionate about. At the end of the day, it gives me sheer happiness." Khushi spoke gleefully.

"Wow! That's amazing." Arnav exclaimed, "To be honest, even I feel exactly the same thing about my work. It makes me feel so grateful that I've done something really good. Our thoughts match so much!"

"Yep! I think we have similar likes, dislikes and beliefs as well!" she quipped, "So which profession are you in?"

"I'm a wedding planner." Arnav replied, "I organize weddings, get people married. The joy that I feel by doing this just cannot be explained with words! Love & marriages are the best things to happen to anyone. "

THAT caused Khushi's husky smile & cheerfulness to falter big time. She felt as if she was swollen by a three-headed ghost. Actually, she would have preferred getting eaten by a three-headed ghost than this.

"What happened to you? Why do you seem so shocked?" asked Arnav, amused, "What do you do for a living?"

"Ermm...Trust me, you wouldn't want to know...especially after what I told you how I feel about my work." she fumbled.

"Hey C'mon!" Arnav was startled, "I'm sure you do something great, given the fact that we have similar views."

"Well...ah, If you insist, I..I'm a Lawyer." she replied carefully.

"That's so good! Which lawyer are you? Civil lawyer? Criminal lawyer?" he enquired eagerly.

"A Divorce Lawyer." she replied.

"A WHAT?"

Khushi bobbed her head.

"Oh." Arnav uttered, dumbfounded. He slumped back on his seat, facing the front. That was huge. Like a really huge shock to him. His eye brows must have disappeared in his hair. He was that speechless.

And at THAT particular moment itself, both of them realized in a jiffy how ridiculously incompatible they were. It was a Big misunderstanding that they held similar thoughts and ideologies, infact they were different to the extent that you could possibly imagine.

The most ever awkward silence followed, the one that makes you feel that ants are building a castle in your stomach.

"So you find happiness and content when you get people divorced?" he asked, making the staunch disapproval in his voice quite evident.

"Yep. I don't know how you feel the same when you get people married. I mean you're basically ruining two lives by getting them hitched!" she expressed amazement.

"Nothing can be worse than a divorce. You break lives, I join lives." he countered.

"I make sure my clients have fast track divorces. Thus, I don't break lives, you do that! I make life easy for them! Love & marriages are crap. Everybody should know that. " she chirped.

"I assume that you got a couple divorced in Delhi?" he expressed disdain.

"Yup. I got them divorced the day right after their wedding! They had some minor tiff so I suggested they better separate if they don't want to have tiffs in future. They agreed. I got them divorced within 72 hours. That's surely a record for me & am proud of it!" she laughed.

Arnav flinched in discomfort as he heard that.

"Okay, I get it, its not funny to you." she leaned back on her seat, "And I assume you got a couple married?"

"I surely did. They won't need a reckless divorce lawyer as theirs is a lifelong bond of love & commitment. "

"Jeez! Those words feel like burden for me! Hope they do, but can't be sure. And reckless is cool." said Khushi, "Hey, next time I would ask my clients if you planned their wedding!"

"There's no need of doing that cause the weddings I plan last for seven lives, not just one. You won't understand it though." he said, piqued.

"But one thing I really do understand is weddings are a really profitable business cause people spend like insane. You are surely making big bucks." she remarked.

"Planning weddings mean much more than just business to me. I've clearly said that before." he was defensive.

"But there's obviously---"

"You know, I think its best we talk no more." Arnav interrupted her with finality in his voice.

"As you wish. Peace."

The rest of the journey was uncomfortably quiet. Khushi could sense that Arnav wanted to walk out of there that very moment. But then, you can't really walk out of a flying aircraft, can you? That's how your freedom gets restricted in the worst imaginable way.

The plane touched down at the Mumbai airport. Arnav Raizada wanted to permanently erase being in flight AI6537 off his life. But the same didn't hold true for Khushi Gupta...

"Arnav wait! You just can't walk away like that!" she called out to him as he exited the airport.

He stopped but didn't turn around to her. She approached him.

"I really don't want this to be our last meeting. We were good before this whole profession thing." she said.

"Exactly. But now we are not good. Can never be."

He was about to walk off but was stopped once again by her words.

"I can't believe you are pushing me away because of my profession."

"Its not about work at all. Its that we're poles apart, two conflicting humans. Don't wanna sound rude but your thoughts, beliefs, ideas appall me a lot. We're so contradictory that we shouldn't have met on the first place. Maybe the Gods above are having a bad day today, that's why they were careless enough to make You & I meet." he said

"In other words, we won't be seeing each other at coffee shops ?"

"I don't see that happening ever. And I hope you come on the same page on this." he replied.

Then heaving his bag above his shoulder, Arnav Raizada walked away.

Khushi had a playful smile on her face as she crossed her arms.

"I agree with Ma now. The most interesting stories are born during a flight. We will definitely meet not once, but many times now Mr Raizada. After all, the world is a small place. A city, even smaller. And even if there's a crowd, you're not the one that I would want to miss."

With that, Khushi Gupta walked away too, in the opposite direction to that of Arnav.
