First, I like this Payal as she voices out her strong opinions without apprehensions. She doesn't merely follow, wishes for an active say in the establishment of future - long way from the woman who dejectedly wondered if there would be a future.
However, I do not agree with her. They are still under active threat and without well-established defense mechanisms. While survival is still precarious and subsistence the need of the hour, the human desire for free choice could take a backseat. Still too early for ideological discussions / debates - me thinks.I'd worry about physical security first and self-expression later. When they reach a breathable point where survival can be taken for granted, where there is some semblance of a stable civil society set up - then they can worry about rights, free choices, and equality. And I see this possibility achievable (under current circumstances) with help of military techniques and skills. She seems to ignore that they are still at war - and while she thinks military dictatorship could be ruining, I see it as a protecting and reinforcing force. Eventually, stability and development could (ideally) organically lead to democracy.Take post-war Iraq for example where swift plans to establish democracy in a badly torn society with hardly any internal security backfired royally.P.S.: This thread is my daily morning routine now along with hot, soothing cup of green tea. It "wakes me up". I learn new things everyday from everyone in this thread - so, thank you all. :-)
Because we have to restart the world and we have sufficient knowledge, its more complicated. There is no manual to say what is the right thing to do. Here their respective experiences give them options. Can you tell a person living in absolute dictatorial regime that living with military is good? There is no one right thing here. World is far more complex than deciding to say "free choice isn't a priority right now". Isn't that exactly what we endorse in an evolved society?
Physical security and self-expression are totally two different things. How is it different from a prison? Again, post-Iraq is an example that cannot be used here because geopolitics is far complex and there are many other issues intrinsically to be considered. The story isn't set in such a world. People aren't there to even make such a decision.
:=) Its a part of my morning regimen too
