Talk Of The Devil!
"You there?"
Arjun asked.
"Yes, Arjun. I'm here."
A female voice answered.
He turned his head toward the direction of the voice and said, "Not you," then he looked straight and asked, "You there?"
"Of course, I'm!"
The same voice replied again.
That changed the air.
He got angry then; it was ruining his plan as a whole.
Somewhat, the voice was familiar, he thought, who knows I may know her.
But it is not in the plan.
"I said to shut up. I'm not talking to you. Got it?"
"Sorry."
The voice apologized sincerely. But there was some unrevealed fear in it. He could feel it. He too was somewhat nervous, but he did not want to show it in his voice, when he next spoke.
"You there?"-he whispered then.
There was no reply this time.
He heard sudden footsteps then; he could not say whether they were approaching or going away.
He stood still.
Suddenly the room was lit and Sakshi was standing near the switch board.
He was shocked tremendously and looked at her questioning eyes.
He got that it was, after all, Sakshi, he was talking to, this long.
He grinned nervously and moved toward her. He saw she was going to ask that question when he reached the door, and she did.
"If you were not talking to me, then to whom?"
He smiled and said, "To me actually," he added, "Never mind."
He left the room fast.
-..
When Sakshi entered in, Chottu and Ayesha were there.
She approached them and whispered fast.
"Guys, something's happened to him. I saw-"
"Now, one second, what are you talking about and who is this he? First sit and tell slowly."
Ayesha tried to calm her.
"Arjun sir?" Chottu asked mystically.
Sakshi nodded.
"Right tell us fast and full."
He whispered and looked the doorway.
"What happened?"
"I went to the records room and was searching some files. I heard footsteps behind."
"You went to the computer section actually, right?"
"Yes, then went to the records room. That's not important. Hear me out."
"If it's not important why did you go there?"
"God! I'm going to kill you."
"Come on Sakshi, tell the rest. What's important then?"
"Right, I was verifying some old files with their numbers and noting them in a paper. The paper fell down. I heard footsteps. I turned and saw Arjun entering in. He looked hither and thither before entering. I thought he knew that I was there. But suddenly he closed the door behind."
"Tell me once the important thing has come in this story. Till then don't expect me to hear it sincerely."
"What? In this sto- matter every single thing is important."
"Then ok. Go ahead!"
"I bent down to pick it up. And as soon as my fingers touched the paper the room went dark."
"Now, this seems important."
"Shh... be serious! He's switched off the lights too-"
"Only lights? What about the fans?"
They turned toward the voice and found me (Shree) standing there.
Sakshi glared at me.
"Horror movie? Late night? Freaked out?"
"Not movie, this is about Arjun."
"Interesting,"
I took a seat and lent an ear to her.
"Then suddenly he asked, 'You there?...' "
She told us the rest in a flow.
"God! At last it's true that he is talking alone."
I looked Chottu significantly. He nodded - affirmative.
"He grinned and left to his room fast, without further word. I don't know what got into him."
-..
Chottu and I sat before the table which was facing one side of Arjun's room, with a coffee cup in hand.
Soon Ayesha and Sakshi joined us.
Sakshi murmured, "Guys, he is talking,"
We casually turned toward that side and got that Arjun was standing before a chair. He was talking as though he was trying to make someone understand a point. He shook his head once and threw his hand in the air in frustration.
Ayesha whispered, "Guys, we've to check whether he is talking alone and if he responses us if we talked to him in this state."
"How?"
She motioned toward Chottu and me.
"Decide who is going to do it," she said.
"Hah?", "Why?"
We responded at once.
"Since, Sakshi got an experience already and I'm the planner. See, this is easy-"
"What's the plan anyway?"
"Right see, just knock his door and go in. Ask him something casually and see if he hears you and answer. That's all."
"That much easy?"
"Really."
"Then go and do it yourself, Ayesha."
"She'll do anything without putting much effort, you know, this is nothing to her."
Sakshi said and raised her thumb.
Thus Ayesha stood up and moved towards his room.
I winked at Chottu and smiled at Sakshi who ignored me right away.
Ayesha knocked the door and put a foot inside.
"Excuse me, sir!"
Arjun turned to her, "Yes?"
"I-I-"
She cleared her throat and said, "Do you, by any chance know where Sakshi is?"
He looked us through the glass wall and frowned.
Ayesha followed his gaze nervously and said, "Oh, it seems she's come now. Thank you, sir."
She escaped from there fast.
Sakshi murmured, "He is seeing here. Do something, guys."
"What can we?-"
"Just act as though we are casually-"
Chottu started laughing suddenly.
"What are you-"
"Casually laughing," he said, still was laughing.
We too laughed with him, casually(?!)
Ayesha approached us and whispered, "Follow me."
We dutifully followed her to the conference room.
Once settled, she said, "He was talking in the phone with an ear-piece in his right ear."
"Thank God!"
"But he is not-"
"Yes, not normal, sometimes."
"We've to observe him closely."
"Oh?"
"No, not putting him in observation, not yet, just we are going to know about him without him knowing about what we do."
"Oh," with a sigh.
"We've to see if he is doing this in the house too."
"While he is alone,"
"Right,"
"If he is, then we've to know what he is talking about."
"Ok."
"From now, he is under our supervision."
"Done."
