He looked at Padmini with a questioning and shocked face.
"how do you know that I didn't kill them?" He asked.
Padmini who was already bewildered seeing all of them crying, suddenly was taken off gaurd.
"You didnt tell her?" RK asked him confused a little.
"I never told this to anyone. I hadnt told them about Radha and Mohan's death. How can I tell if I killed them or not.." Malik replied and then again hus fmgaze fixed on Padmini.
"Padmini.. I asked you something." He said seeing her standing like a statue.
Hearing her husband call out to her something clicked in her suddenly. She broke into loud cries. She was screaming and tears were flowing freely.
Madhu ran to her and held her arms. "Mumma... What happened? Control yourself.." Madhu said to her trying to soothe her.
RK stood up baffled seeing her. He couldn't understand what was happening.
Malik stared at her for a few seconds.
"What had happened Padmini?" He asked in a stricter tone.
Padmini was still crying profusely.
"What did you do?!" Malik screamed at her making her queit suddenly. Padmini stared at Malik as her sobs were stopped instantly due to the shock of his scream. Malik had never screamed at her.
Madhu looked at them confused.
"It was my fault.." Padmini said as she broke into tears once again.
"What are you saying?" Madhu asked horrified.
"You were jealous of Mohan and Radha.. That I knew. But you killed them?! Could you have gone to that level?!" Malik said in disbelief.
"No.. No I didnt kill them.." she said trying defend herself.
"Then?" Malik said as he was the only one who could have enough senses as to speak. RK felt as if a bigger rock falling straight on his head. When Malik was innocent and he felt relieved but here was a bigger shocker to him.
"I helped them but I didnt know they would kill them." Padmini said while still crying loudly.
"Stop your drama!" Malik shouted at her again.
Padmini looked at him scared as she queited down suddenly.
"You always hated them.. I thought its just a timely fancy and would ware off. But I cant believe you went to that extent!" Malik said shocked and angry.
"No Malik.. trust me.. Bhatia never showed that he would kill them.. how could I have let Mohan harmed? You only say.." she said restlessly in her defence not able to hear that she could bring any harm to him.
"Mohan.. you say you wouldnt have let him harmed.. but you got him killed?" Malik asked angrily.
RK and Madhu looked at the two confused. Where the whole discussion was going was out of their reach. And Padmini being involved was something they couldn't digest.
"Dont say that Malik.. you know.. I loved him.. I could never do that.." Padmini said crying and screaming as if trying to prove that to the whole world who seemed to accuse her.
"You didnt love him Padmini.. You were just stubborn!" He said with a hurt face. "You snatched away my brother from me.." Malik said as he fell on the sofa defeatedly.
"Wait a minute! Thats enough of me being a side watch.. I dont like the idea of me, not being in control.. so what the hell is going on here... what is she saying?" RK asked gesturing towards Padmini in a firm tone as he tried to control the strange emotions building in him.
Malik looked at RK and sighed. "we never thought we will have to tell you and Madhu about all this.. Padmini and Mohan were neighbours since childhood. While I studied with Mohan in college. As you both know we were brothers more than friends.. I used to come to Mohan's place and there I used to see Padmini.. I had fell for her and she used to see us whenever we went to college.. but when I talked to her about us I came to know that she never came to see me off but she came for Mohan.." Malik said looking at Padmini with a hurt face.
"I had loved Mohan.. since childhood. And I was very sure that we would get married because our families had great bonding.. But then.." Padmini said sitting onhe floor warily as she had dropped herself a few minutes back.
"Then what?" RK asked restlessly seeing both of them silent.
"Mohan had met Radha in college and he had fallen in love at first sight with her.. They both started meeting up and Mohan sent her family the proposal.. after their marriage I decided to talk to Padmini again and she agreed this time.. But little did I know that she had agreed only so she could stay close to Mohan through me.."
"I had thought I would be happy being close to him and seeing him all my life.. but I was wrong.." she said with a sob. "When I saw him and Radha happy and so much in love, I used to envy them. I couldnt help but imagine myself in Radha's place and then I felt a jealousy against Radha.. and I didnt know when that small jealousy turned to hatred and I couldnt see them happy and successful. When I came to know about Bhatia.. I told him that I would give them the internal news about Mohan and Malik's company.." she said while still crying.
"We faced a few losses and we never realized that it was because of you?!" Malik said shocked realizing himself.
"I had thought it would be just that and Mohan would get to spend less time with Radha, being busy with his work and coping up the losses.." Padmini said in regret realizing herself how so stupid se was.
"I cant believe you Padmini! How sick could your thought process be.." Malik said disgusted.
"But I didnt know he would go to the extent of killing them Malik.. I swear I wouldnt have helped Bhatia.. I even tried to stop him but he just said that he wont get back in his plans anymore.. That's why I ran to my sister's house in a panic making excuse of her health.." Padmini said with eyes closed in guilt and pain.
"You knew he would kill them?" RK asked shocked out of his wits. Till now he still had some amount of softness for her seeing her helpless.
Padmini just nodded her head as she sucked in the sob.
"And you didnt try to tell me or Malik? We could have saved them.. and you too" RK almost screamed at his wit's end thinking of the possibilities.
" I was scared.. that if I tell.. you all would disown me.. I was scared that Bhatia might harm others too.. maybe all of us.." she said crying.
"Thats absolutely no damn excuse! You could have saved them.. They would have been alive.. You just let everything happen when you knew!" RK screamed again as his mind got boggled on the chances that his parents could have been saved.
"You disgust me Padmini.." Malik said in a defeated voice. "And I am disgusted with myself that I ever fell in love with a woman like you.." he said crying.
"Please dont say that Malik.. i didnt know what else to do at that time.. since 7 years I have taken that burden.. I didnt know that you were there at that time.. I beared this pain of Mohan and Radha's death alone.. knowing that I could have saved them but was too coward to act.. I have been drowning in guilt. Atleast you knew yourself that you were innocent. But i knew that i was the culprit. And Malik, at least you knew where Rishabh was.. Since 7 years I havent slept in peace thinking where Rishabh would be.. There hasnt been one night when I havent prayed for his safety and his return.." she said while crying.
"You didn't even tell the truth when Papa took the blame on himself that day.. when I and Rishu came here.." Madhu asked in a robotic voice after a long time while she stared straight in some blank space.
"I was scared that you would go away from me the same way you disowned your father.. I was shocked when Malik said that he killed them but when I saw you going away from him I was scared for myself.. That you and Rishabh would hate me the same way.. I love you both.." she said helplessly.
"You loved me?" RK asked with a sarcastic laugh though his eyes had tears.
"Yes Rishabh.. I love you.. Madhu and you are no different for me.. I raised you up as my own.." Padmini said to him restlessly as if trying to prove herself.
"Because you are Mohan's son.. thats why she always loved you.. maybe even more than Madhu.." Malik said with a strange laugh. He didnt understand where everything headed. How complicated their lives were and how strange was Padmini. "Padmini.. you always harmed the ones you loved.." Malik said looking at her.
Padmini closed her eyes in pain hearing him. She knew that was the truth. First, Mohan then Rishabh.
"Tell me what I should do!" RK said holding his head as he dropped to his knees.
"Love you coz you loved my father so dearly or hate you that your love caused us all this life long wound.." RK asked in a defeated tone. He felt his head spinning. Malik and Padmini looked at him helplessly.
Suddenly they all heard a thud. As their gaze went to the source of sound they found Madhu dropped on the floor. They all ran to her and RK was the first one to reach her.

Well.. the creative heads up for this twisted twist goes to Ni.. she suggested that.. and I did the writing.. but Ni.. i couldn't get it all on Padmini.. Couldn't make it that harsh on RK and Madhu.
