The earring seems to play an important part in Manan's relationship. The first time it was highlighted was when Nandini came in search of Manik to let him know she is agreeable to meet him at 7.00 p.m. at his residence. In other words she was willing to compromise and meet him on his terms. Manik too was looking for her at the same time to let her know he is willing to meet her at the college at 7.00 a.m. (in her terms) but seeing each other and realising that the other was willing to compromise, they retracted and tried to hold their ground. Nandu bluffed that she came looking for her 'missing' earring which was very much in her ear and Manik was quick to catch her bluff. After some seductive caresses, their meeting ends with Manik telling her that it isn't easy to change him. Subsequently it turned out that Manik does end up meeting her at the college in the morning, with Cabir's truth and Nandu's consoling hug softening him up. So despite his claims to the contrary, Manik did change for his Nandu and met her in her terms. The second instance of the earring cropping up between them was after Manan break up. Nandu is reminded of their times together while wearing her earring and throws them away to escape those memories. Manik later notices that they were missing when he sees her in the college and lets her know about it only to ask to forget he ever mentioned it, so that she does not realise how much he is affected by the breakup.
The third instance was in the farm house where a drunk Manik notices her missing earring and takes it upon himself to go hunting for it, although Nandu tries her best to prevent him from doing so lest they get caught by Soha. Finally he 'finds' her earring and gifts her a flower which she sweetly wears in her ear to please him and calm him down.
Manik does seem fascinated by earrings because that is the very first valentine's gift he sends across to Nandu as they remind him of the star which Nandu is for him.
Earring makes an appearance again in yesterday's episode with Nandu losing it when Manik pushes her away. Once she realises it is missing, she goes in search of it. She throws everything around her, including a 'heart' to find the earring for it is Manik's gift and she did not want to lose it. Does she find it or does Manik find it before her? We will have to wait and watch.
Now coming to this post. Is it about recounting all the earring scenes? No. I just listed them out to figure out if the earring could be symbolic of something else which connects all the scenes above. Now earring is an ornament one wears on the ear. Ear is the organ with which you hear. So could all this relate to the power of listening and how the presence or absence of this is affecting Manan's relationship?
Coming to the first scene. Nandu had both her earrings on although she pretended to hunt for it. Both of them figured out each other well. They knew that the other had returned to settle for a compromise but refused to accept that they were willing to give in to the other as their egos came in the way. Ultimately Manik did change for his Nandu and his Nandu did not gloat over it, as he feared she would. The key word is that they both were listening to each other's heart and not merely the spoken word.
The second scene was after the break up - a break up which could have been stalled had Nandu not merely heard Manik's spoken word of revenging her for the punch but had listened to his unspoken cry to stop him from self destructing. However, she associated the earring with their close encounters and threw them away to free herself from those painful memories but then in doing so she also cut herself off from listening to her heart.
The third instance at the farm house where she loses her earring was symbolic of Nandu again losing the power to listen to the voice of reason which keeps their bond glued to each other- their need to complete each other. She did not tell Manik about Soha's psychotic tendencies nor did he share with her what he knew about Soha. They have landed up in this mess because of their lack of communication and the lack of power to hear the unsaid. The fact that Nandu wore Manik's 'flower' earring instead of taking the effort to find the earring herself, underlines that she still goes by the face value and not the intrinsic value of their relationship.
Manik's gift of the earring is again symbolic of his need for her to listen beyond the obvious - go beyond Nyon and her tapes. When she fails to do so, he pushes her away which results in her losing the earring yet again. Nandu is now desperately searching for her missing earring, tossing up her 'heart' in trying to find it. Manik holds her 'heart', giving some hope that he has not fully let it go.
Will Manan learn from their mistakes and understand the importance of communication - the power to speak their minds and listen with their hearts? Only time can tell.
