Anjali took the baby boy and sat down beside her brother, who was seated on the couch, holding his baby girl in his arms.
"Don't ignore your boy, Chhote." Anjali smiled as her brother lifted his gaze from his daughter.
"Mamu, may I hold her please." Aryan continued with his pleading, which he was busy doing from hours now.
"No, you can't"
At last Aryan got some reply, but not the one he wanted to hear.
"Why?" he pouted.
Not caring to reply him, Arnav looked at the baby in his Di's arm, then again at the cute bundle in his arms ; Not willing to let go of his daughter, but wanting to hold his Son.
Anjali chuckled at her brother's helpless situation. Holding the baby boy with one arm, she took the baby girl from his brother's arm and placed the baby boy there. "There , hold your boy now"
Arnav looked down at the baby in his arms.
"He too is so light, Di...boys are suppose to be heavier, right?"
Anjali laughed. "It's nothing like that, Arnav. Tum bhi na.."
Arnav looked down at the baby, a small smile broke on his lips. He is behaving so clueless about everything. He is clueless about everything. He had never held any baby in his entire life, never felt all the emotions that were flooding his heart. He knows nothing about babies. His panicked eyes darted from the baby held in his arm to his Di's arm. He will have to learn everything now. He can't leave Khushi to handle everything alone again. He will have to do his part.
He held the baby close to his chest. They are his babies too.
Khushi's eyes fluttered open, feeling nothing but numbness all over her body. She adjusted her sight at the bright day light, her eyelids felt too heavy. Her throat felt too dry. Swallowing, she tried to look around.
"Khushi..." her head turned towards the sweet voice, and she saw Anjali Di coming and sitting beside her.
"Anjali D..i..." Khushi started, but stopped as her eyes fell on the bundle in her arms. A sudden ache rose in her chest, making her eyes blurry with thin coat of tears. "My ...ba..by ..."
Anjali smiled and kept the baby beside Khushi. "Yes, your baby...isn't she the cutest?" Anjali asked, lightly pinching the baby's cheek.
Khushi titled her head and stared at her baby. Tears flooded her eyes and flowed down her cheeks, her heart too overwhelmed.
"But ..." her panicked eyes looked at Anjali Di. "I had twins ... Doctor had said to me ... He told ..."
"And he was right." Khushi's eyes jerked towards that voice.
"Here is your baby boy ..." Arnav came and kept the baby beside his twin sister.
Anjali stood off the bed, leaving the space for the Daddy to complete the little family.
Arnav, taking the cue, sat on the bed. And a hurt like never before coursed inside his chest, squeezing his heart in a painful grip when he saw Khushi put her hand around her babies, as if protecting from him. His hurt eyes darted to her, whose panicked eyes were already fixed at him.
Anjali clearly missed Khushi's action , but the tension in the air was very much palpable, and she felt it. Wanting to ease the tension, she thought of starting the conversation.
"Khushi, how are you? Feeling good?" Anjali asked.
Khushi's eyes shifted from Arnav ji to Anjali Di.
"Yes...I am fine .. " Khushi said, though she felt anything but fine. A pain was there in her lower abdomen , threatening to succumb her whole body in it any second. She felt light, weak.
"But this is not what Doctor said to me.." Anjali said, earning her brother's attention.
"What? What did he say?" Arnav said.
"He said Khushi is weak. As it was a surgical delivery, and she was weak already, we will have to take care of her. And I am sure Khushi was lying when she said she is fine, weren't you, Khushi?" Anjali's questioning eyes asked her.
Khushi lowered her eyes.
"What is it? Tell us Khushi. We are your family, we love you, why do you hide everything from us?" Anjali asked as she caressed Khushi's hair.
"I...its.. .just a mild pain in abdomen ... nothing else.."
"Thanks for telling." Anjali smiled. "I will talk to Doctor." She said and excused herself to give the family their time, and also to have a talk with the Doctor.
"Khushi, you should not hide anything from us, especially when it's related to your health."
Khushi just stared at him, without saying anything.
"And I ..." he swallowed past the lump. "I am sorry for... for not taking care of you and the babies ...I am very sorry ... " he looked down at the babies under their Mother's arm. "I promise to take care of them ... to love them ... I promise, Khushi ..."
Khushi just stared at him, remembering all the time when he had made very clear that he don't like kids. They are just irritating and annoying little thing for him. The last 7 months she had spent with him, he had asked about her health many times, but never had asked about her babies. Never accompanied her for her check ups. He use to talk with her, his conversation flowing everywhere, but never anything related to her babies. He had always looked at her belly as if...as if it pained him to look there, as if he is tolerating the presence of her babies inside her because they were inside her, because he had no other way of getting rid of them. Her arm around her babies tightened. How can she trust a man like him around her babies?
Arnav saw all the different emotions flash in her eyes, but not even one comforting his aching heart. She doesn't trust him. And it pained more because he had given her all the reasons in the last seven months to do exactly that. It was his fault. Why will she believe his words now when in the past he had made it very clear from his gestures how he really feels for her baby? He had even raised his hand, ready to strike her when she had said she is carrying Rudra's baby. Arnav closed his eyes in regret.
His eyes jerked open as he heard a shrill cry fill the silent room. He looked down at the babies. His daughter was crying. He reached down and picked her in his arms.
"Shhh... shhh.. What happened?"
Khushi tried to push herself up, but failed miserably. Too weak.
Arnav saw her struggle and leaned over her, making her froze.
"Be still, Khushi. You are not well, and you will allow me to take care of you and the babies, whether you trust me or not.." Arnav made it clear. If he had made her believe he don't care for her babies, then he can very well make her change her belief too.
Khushi could all but stare at him, unable to find any word to defy him.
Fixing her down with his gaze, he laid the baby beside her. "She is hungry I guess." Arnav said, looking at Khushi.
Khushi's eyes darted from one corner to another uncomfortably. And soon her heart jumped in her mouth as she felt a tug at her maternity hospital gown.
"What... what are you doing?" she asked, panicked, catching his hand which was on the button of her gown.
"I told you Khushi, she is hungry and you will allow me to help you. I am your husband." He said, as if that was all to justify his action.
"Di...Di can help me .. Amma can help me ... " she shuttered, feeling her cheeks burning.
"Di went to meet the Doctor , and your Amma had gone to temple, holding some pooja for you and the new born. Now allow me ..." he said, and not giving in her little wiggling, he snaked his arms around her waist and carefully pulled her against his chest. Keeping the pillow behind her back, he rested her against it. Getting up, he walked across the bed and sat beside Khushi. Pulling his one leg up and folding it, he pulled her against his chest. Now she lay in his arms, her back plastered against his chest. Bending little, he picked his daughter and held to Khushi's chest. "Let me hold her for you, Khushi. You are too weak, please?" Arnav all but pleaded, kissing her hair. "No need to feel embarrass, I will not look down, promise."
Khushi gave in, feeling too weak to fight him.
Arnav felt her relax against him and he again kissed her hair. "Thank you .."
With great effort, Khushi lifted her hand to unbutton her gown, the sedatives still having its effects lingering on her, making her dizzy momentarily. Refusing to give in the darkness, she uncovered her chest to feed her daughter.
With a soft contented sigh, she slumped against his hard chest supporting her from back and gave in the darkness, her eyes drooping close.
Arnav moved his head little to right, tucking her face between his neck and shoulder. He looked down at their daughter, her cheeks moving, trying to fill her empty stomach. He smiled as he rested his cheek against Khushi's hair. It will not be hard to make Khushi believe how much he love and care for the babies when he have already fallen for them.
As he saw the baby's movement slow down and eyes droop close, he held her carefully with one arm and kept her on the bed. Getting up, he kept the pillow on the bed and laid Khushi down carefully. Pulling the loose end of her gown together, he buttoned it.
He sat there, looking at his little family, promising to do everything that will make Khushi allow him in the beautiful little world she have created.
Hope you all liked it!
