Aahil froze. With trembling hands he reached for the elderly man once again. "Suleiman Chacha! Suleiman Chacha!" He called desperately, feeling a sharp sting behind his eyes. It felt like those days again when he would sneak out of bed to wake up the sleeping old man and hold his hand for comfort. But this time there was no response. His body was cold and still. No amount of calling or shaking was reviving the old man. Aahil swallowed hard trying to calm himself as he repeatedly shook the lifeless body that was lying on the bed in front of him.
His heart was hammering and his head was spinning. Aahil tried to grab a hold on himself. But it was no use, a part of him had somewhat registered what happened. But another part of him was still clouded with shock. No! Nothing has happened to him! No! Aahil staggered up and tried to figure out what to do. He needed to wake him up! But Aahil found it hard to move. It was as if his body was heavier than usual and almost everything around him looked hazy.
He glanced around and finally noticed everyone who had crowded in the small room. It was as if they were watching an exhibit in a museum. Pointing, whispering and shaking their heads. He felt like screaming at them to stop! He wanted to assure them that everything was fine! That they were not needed! That he was there for his Suleiman Chacha. That he would wake up! Aahil took in the chaos around him. In the midst of it all, lay the one man who helped him live through the nightmare known as his childhood. Aahil felt horrified as he heard the whispers.
"Aree yeh toh mar gaya!" One lady whispered.
"Lekin kal tak toh yeh theek the. Lagta hai unhe kisi ne bure tarah se mara hai."
"Ya Allah, ek buzurk ke saath aisa?!!" But no one understood how he felt. Aahil clasped his hands over his ears, trying to drown out the voices. He was afraid he would scream, go mad and lose control. He wanted them to stop their nonsense and go away! But nothing could change the truth.
The prayers were said and soon everyone was being escorted out of the room. The body was going to be removed. But Aahil stood still, he could not move from where he was. He begged on the inside for Suleiman Chacha to wake up! He prayed to Allah over and over! He was waiting for a miracle! Where the old man would open his eyes and smile at him! He wanted to see the same twinkle in his eyes that was present years ago. To hear him speak in same comforting voice, which would say words of wisdom to calm him and teach him prayers to shun away his fears. To get blessed by same hands that would feed and comfort him! He stood there unable to look away until he felt a hand on his arm. He turned around and met the eyes of the one person who never failed to give him strength. She nodded slowly, hinting that they had to leave. She squeezed his arm gently to let him know she was there. But Aahil didn't want to leave. He didn't want to leave Suleiman Chacha alone!
He looked at the small room where the man lived. He had never tried to find him again. He was so lost in his pain and hell-bent on destroying himself that he never searched for the father figure who supported him throughout his childhood! The poor man went through so many hardships while he lived in a mansion. But that mansion never had any value for him! It gave him nothing but pain! He was probably the poorest man alive, bereft of the most valuable wealth of life, happiness. But at the moment, he felt even more empty. Nothing could stop the pain! No one could change what happened! Suleiman Chacha was no longer alive! All these years, he had failed to even look for him and now, it was all over!
Sanam gently led Aahil away from the room. He protested, not wanting to leave. But Sanam guided him back to the parked car and opened the door in the back. She waited until he sat and then went around to open the door on the other end. She took a seat right next to him and they sat in silence for a few seconds. But she eventually turned to face him. He didn't know he was shaking until she held his arm.
"Aahil," she said gently. But that was enough to break him. The tears he held back began to come down as Suleiman Chacha's face flashed before him. Sanam wrapped her arms around and pulled him closer. He tried to stop his tears but he could not. The pain was just too sharp! So he gave in and took the comfort she offered.
"Sanam... Suleiman Chacha! Unhe kuch nahi hua na... Woh abhi uth jayenge! Please kaho na ke woh theek hai. Woh bilkul theek hai Sanam..." Sanam gently rubbed his back. She remained silent and Aahil knew there was nothing she could say. He had to accept the reality. He held her tighter trying to stop the pain rushing through his body. His head was hurting so much that he was afraid he would pass out.
"Sanam please make the pain go away. Sanam... Please," he choked. He wanted her to do something. To fix everything! He wanted to feel safe like before!
"I am right here Aahil. Sab theek ho jayega. Aap shant ho jaiye. Jo hua hai hum usse badal nahi sakhte. Lekin hum unke liye bahut dua karenge. Ke unhe jannat nazeeb ho aur woh aur bhi acha rahe. Iss duniya ke saare burai se bahut door. Aahil, aap aapne aap ko sambhaliye! Aap ki galti nahi hai! Sab khuda ki marzi hai! Please Aahil, calm down! Main hoon aap ke saath! Right by your side... Always!"
She held on to him with all her strength. The comfort felt like a balm and his tears began to stop. He felt his body go limp yet he was regaining his strength. He wanted to remain like this forever! He wanted her to stay with him forever!
But suddenly those words brought back harsh memories. He realized what he was doing. He was repeating his mistake. He was trying to find comfort in the arms of the woman who hurt him the most! She left him... To feel alone and broken. Once again! He trusted her with each and every secret and allowed her to see all his weaknesses. But she left. Now again he was breaking down before her. But this time, if he let himself become weak and she hurt him again, he would not be able to bear it. The pain was just too strong the first time! He didn't have the strength to face it again! He pulled away quickly and composed himself. Aahil could see shock in her eyes. Her eyes were glistening with tears, reflecting his pain. She seemed to truly care. She stood by him, she always did. Yet he could not forget that night.
Aahil swallowed down the pain and took a deep breath. She wanted to say something but he refused to look at her. He didn't want to see pain in her eyes! Aahil opened the door, stepped out, and reached near the driver seat. He grabbed a bottle of water and splashed his face. He turned back to see that the people from the hospital were entering the small room. I wont let your death go to waste Suleiman Chacha, he thought as he curled his fists. I swear I wont!
He sat in the driver's seat and looked back, "come sit in the front, lets go home." He felt guilt stab him as he said those words in a harsh voice. He hated talking to her like this! He wanted to hold her and kiss her senseless, until they both were relieved of all pain! He loved her so much! But she rejected him. He was ready to make her Begum, give her all the happiness and rectify all his mistakes, but she didn't want that. He wanted to ask her so badly, why she left. But he didn't want to hear her answer. He knew it had nothing to do with his property. Sanam was not greedy! It had to do with him! She didn't want him! She claimed to love him but there was something that was holding her back! Thats why he'd rather keep the distance.
As she quietly took a seat next to him, he could sense her disappointment and hurt. If only he could figure her out! If only it all made sense! He gripped the steering wheel hard as he prepared himself for the journey back to the Mansion.
As he started the car, Suleiman Chahcha's last words replayed in his head, "The killer is very close to you beta! Very close! Protect yourself and those who love you. Its all a very dangerous game!" He didn't get to finish. But that was enough to alert Aahil. Who was close to them? He didn't want to think anyone in his family was capable of crime! One name flashed before him but he quickly pushed it away! How could he even think that! There was no way she could do this. But who was around that time! Everyone else was younger than him! An outsider? It was all confusing! But Aahil knew he had to work fast!
As he thought about the recent events, something crossed his mind. Was the killer targeting them once again? Those attacks on Sanam and Ammi, that seemed like passing accidents... were they planned ones?!! A lot of things happened that could not be considered mere coincidences! Only he was foolish enough not realize nor investigate it then! But now he would! The killer knew he was on a hunt! He would have to work extra hard to protect his loved ones! He thought about Suleiman Chacha and a chill ran through him. He looked at the woman next to him. Nothing was going to happen to her! Not while he was alive! He would never let her get hurt! He would protect his family, even at the cost of his own life! He would find and punish the killer! Very soon!
Sanam had waited outside for sometime, giving Aahil the privacy to talk to Suleiman Chacha. She knew this meant Aahil was reaching one step closer to the real killer, Begum Tanveer! She could not wait until the day that witch was exposed. But a part of her felt bad seeing Aahil work so hard to find the killer who cost his Ammi precious years of her life, if only he knew! Sanam waited for sometime, pacing around the yard, thinking about how Aahil was going to react! Would he believe chacha? Or would he once again fall in the trap of blind love? Sanam was a bit nervous.
Suddenly she heard a commotion and nearby people gathering around the same room Aahil was in. Sanam felt her heart race. Something was wrong! She ran towards the room and pushed through the crowd, trying to reach her husband. When she finally did, Sanam was shocked. There lay Suleiman Chacha, injured and hurt on the bed. He was no longer breathing. That realization stunned her. It couldn't be!
She looked at Aahil. He was trying to shake the old man awake. Sanam closed her eyes and said her prayers. This was terrible! But she would have to be strong! Sanam opened her eyes and quickly wiped her eyes as she moved towards him. Aahil was desperately trying to wake the man up. The shock was too overwhelming and the truth had not fully registered in his mind! Sanam was worried. Aahil was very attached to Suleiman Chacha. But no one could change Allah's decision!
Aahil stood up and Sanam could see that he no longer had the strength to be there. She needed to get him back to the car. The voices began to whisper, as they always did. But as soon as she saw Aahil close his ears, she knew she had to take him away and fast! She gently reached for his arm and pulled him away from the room. He protested, his eyes begging her to let him stay. But as much as it broke her to see him lose control like this, she had to help him come out of the shock.
Sanam led him to the car and helped him sit inside. Once they were settled in, she gave him a few minutes to compose himself. Sanam saw Aahil shake. She knew he was trying hard to hold himself together. But she also knew that it was best that he let it out. She reached for his arm and softly called his name. She saw the tears streaming down his cheeks as he broke down. She instinctively reach for him and held him tight. He began to breath heavy as he cried out the shock and pain. He kept on mumbling and repeating pleas to make things fine. To bring back Suleiman Chacha. To make the pain go away. Sanam knew there was not much she could do but comfort him. They had lost yet anther lead! But she was positive Tanveer had a hand in this! Suleiman Chacha lost his life because of her! She would have to pay for playing with innocents! Allah could never be so cruel!
Sanam tried to soothe Aahil, saying words to calm him while trying to not let her own tears spill out. She could not let him break down! He needed to fight! She held him tighter. There was a harsher truth, a startling reality and a bigger shock awaiting him! It scared Sanam to think what it might do to him. But she was right by his side through this! Until he reached the truth, she would be there for him at each step!
Aahil was suddenly very silent. Sanam was about to speak again when he pulled away. Sanam was shocked when he removed himself completely. He wiped his face harshly and looked away. Sanam just sat there wondering what happened. She wanted to reach for him but he stepped out of the car. He took a bottle from inside and splashed his face with water. He refused to look at her and Sanam sat there silently, disappointment washing though her. Why the distance?!! Was this the same man who was seeking so much comfort in her arms just moments ago? What happened that he moved away? Why was he acting cold? Does he regret touching her? Was he thinking about Nayi Sanam? Sanam didn't want to think so low but pain rushed though her entire body, forcing her to think the worse! She tried to push away those thoughts.
While she was glad that he felt stronger, his cold demeanor hurt, a lot! He barked at her to sit in the front and she complied. Not wanting to upset him further. He made mistakes and she forgave. Not because he was allowed to or because she was weak, but because she wanted him to reach the truth. To expose the witch and see the truth! She loved him! She wanted him to always be safe, no matter where he was! But his attitude towards her was not one she could easily accept. She just could not! The distance was growing and she could do nothing to mend it! The truth would fix certain things but would not undo these moments. The trust and respect could not be brought back! But Sanam would not let that stop her from doing her bit to support and help the man she loved! She would always love him, regardless of what their future holds! That would never change!
While the rest of the journey went in silence, Aahil kept on taking glances at her. Sanam ignored him. For now, they needed to reach the truth! That was their first priority! Although they were unable to find any answers from here, Sanam was sure Allah had some other path open for them! They would reach the truth! They definitely would!
The End!
