'Tamasha' a challenging film: Imtiaz Ali

Saturday, 7 February 2015 - 1:38pm IST | Agency: PTI
Director Imtiaz Ali talks about his next release starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone..

Director Imtiaz Ali says his upcoming Ranbir Kapoor-starrer romantic drama 'Tamasha' is a demanding film in terms of performances and story-telling.

The 'Highway' director is not bothered about people's expectations from the movie as it marks his second outing with Ranbir after their 2011 successful film 'Rockstar' because he feels 'Tamasha' has its own individuality and a new set of challenges. "Expectations don't matter. 'Rockstar' was a film we did and enjoyed. This ('Tamasha') has been challenging. We got new things that we need to express through performances, the film and poetry," Imtiaz, 43, said.

The writer-director is known for his poignant presentation of modern-day love stories. The 'Jab We Met' filmmaker said Hindi movies present a certain moral sense, which the society harbours.

"I feel Indian films, more than anything else, are instrumental and responsible for a sense of morality that we have in the society. I actually check my movies, while making or after they are made that they don't drift away from those moralistic values because I know a lot of people are watching," Imtiaz said.

Imtiaz said he has been influenced by casual, light- hearted movies more than "meaningful cinema". "I do realise the power of the medium I am in and there's a sense of responsibility that I'm trying to have so that it does not affect anyone badly. I have myself been greatly influenced by the films I have seen but I have got most affected by the films, which don't come under meaningful cinema, movies which were just casual, good. I've acquired social skills and moral values from such films," he said.

Moralistic values? Like treating marriage like a decision of what outfit to wear for the day - you can change your mind anytime you want as in Love Aaj Kal. No biggie. Like carrying on a full-blown relationship with your lover while still married as in Rockstar? Great values. 😆
Why do these Bolly people have to sound so smug and superior all the time Just make movies and stop acting as social reformers.

I've enjoyed all of Imtiaz's films. Although I couldn't sit through Rockstar the first time, but when I finally got around to watching the whole thing I liked it.

Anyways, looking forward to this film too (:

French beard makes RK look even more asexual.
He looks like a salesman..DP on the other hand has gained a lot of notoriety .. she is seen as ambitious bold and brazen

Everything seems off..

Well JWM, Socha Naa Thaa, LAK were very nice. Rockstar is good in patches but what made that film was Ranbir's performance. One of his finest till date.

Am looking forward to Tamasha though honestly, I see no chemistry between DP-Ranbir. But they mesh well together & it's Imtiaz so am sure it will be good.
