Chapter 4

At Krishna's house. Maa Maa.. we hear somebody shouting. Jaldi karo mujhe conference ke liye aaj hi nikhalna hoga. Meri flight evening 6 ki hain. Aur kal mujhe wahan se mysore bhi jana hain...

Krishna: Teek hain beta. I thought Vikram was going for this conference.

Beta: No Maa. He was supposed to go. However, Neha is not feeling well. Therefore, I decided to go. It would have been better if he went.

Krishna: Good. I think it is sensible to do that. I wanted to talk to you about something beta. Do u have time?

Beta: Maa boliye. I am sure I have 10- 15 mins.

Krishna: Dekho beta, Tere shaadi ke liye ek proposal aiya hain.

Beta: Maa, aapko pata hain na iske baare main.

Krishna: Pata hain beta. That is why I am suggesting this particular proposal. Girl is well educated, seems settled in her profession.

Beta: Maa, Phir bhi... I would like another 2 years before I am settled. I need to expand my company and I will not be able to give time for this relationship.

Krishna: I know what you have in your mind. Look, I just spoke to the girls' mother today. I am not asking you to decide today. Think about it. I will talk to them tomorrow and let them know you are out of town. We can continue when you are back. Promise you will think about this.

Beta: Maa, Ok. Main sochta hoon. Thinking. Yeh kya hua.. Maa tho is baar mere peecha padegi hain . Vikram bhi mere peeche hain. Chal chod think of the conference and see how we can expand company. His brother and sister wishing him good luck disturb his thoughts.

Siblings: Bhai ab kab aare hain wapas?

Beta: I am back on Thursday. Kyun? Kuch khaas hain kya?

Siblings: Nahi. We were thinking of going out together for a dinner during the weekend. Vikram, Neha and all of us. I heard a new place has opened and we have a few days break next week from college.

Beta: Great! That will be good after the travel. Chalo. I will head out now; otherwise, I will miss my flight.

Everybody wish him safe trip. He takes a cab to the airport. On his way, he calls Vikram.

Beta: Vikram, kya kar raha hain? Neha kaisi hain? I am on my way to the airport.

Vikram: Neha is feeling better. Tu nikhal chuka hain. Kitne bhaje hain flight?

Beta: 6 PM. I wanted to ask you if there was anything in particular regarding the conference that I should check out or know other than the things we discussed?

Vikram: Let me look at the agenda. Ek minute. Vikram glances over and suddenly... oh I forgot something... Arey, ek baat to main bhool gaya. There is an interesting paper presentation on Monday afternoon session. You should attend. It will be useful for our company. I will send you the time, hall and topic.

Beta: I will check it out. Chal take care of Neha. I will see you back on Thursday. Bye

Another talk to attend. He receives the sms from Vikram. Smiles seeing the topic of talk and how did Vikram forget to mention this. His thoughts wander between conference, dinner next week and what Maa mentioned. He reaches Bangalore and settles in his hotel. Calls home and informs his arrival in Bangalore. Calls the car company to confirm his travel arrangements for tomorrow morning. He says.. long day.. and dozes off.

At Priya's house.

Sudhir and Priya reach home. Shipra brings some tea and they sit down for talking about the proposal.

Shipra: Aap dono ka din kaisa gaya?

Sudhir: Teek gaya. Bas thoda thak gaya hoon main. Aaj kal itni energy nahi hain.

Priya: Papa ab bas 6 months aur... Phir aap relax kar sakte ho. Mera din bahut busy raha maa, woh conference hain na... Waise main kal subah nikhal rahe hain around 10 AM. Soch rahe the ki shaam ko Chamundi hills jane ki. Dekhte hain.

Sudhir: Arey Shipra, Abhi call karte hain kya? Mrs Khaana jis ladke ke bare main bataya tha.

Shipra: Main bhi naa... ...

Sudhir: Ab tune kya kiya?

Shipra: Kuch nahi kiya main... App bhi na kohi mauka nahi chodte... Ab suniye. Krishna ji ne call kiya tha.

Sudhir: Kaun Krishna Ji?..

Shipra: Patience... Mrs. Khanna ne ladke ke bare main bataya tha, unki Ma aka naam Krishna hain.

Sudhir: Oh... Kya bola unhone?

Shipra: Dekhiye ji Aur Priya tu bhi sun. Ladka 33 yrs hain, Company shuru kiya hain apne dost ke saath, ek bhai aur behan hain, unke papa nahi hain aur Mumbai main rehte hain. Un logon ko is proposal ko aage badane me koi problem nahi. She said she would come back to us after speaking to her son. Maine kaha hame bhi koi problem nahi hain ise aage badane me. Main aap dono se baat karke phir bataongi.

Sudhir: Accha kiya Shipra. Mujhe bhi yeh proposal sahi lag raha hain. Jana hua family hain aur ladka bhi suitable hain Priya ke liye. Kyun Priya?

Just then, Kartik comes home. He hears about the marriage proposal for Priya and is excited.

Kartik: Arey wah... Yeh tho bahut achi news hain.. Starts to tease her

Priya: Kartik .. chup kar na tu. Papa, you are right. I understand that the proposal seems fit. But I would like to think about it and can we keep it on hold till my conference is done. Please papa.. Maa..

Sudhir: Ok. I have no problem with it. But promise me that you will think about it.

Priya: Ok papa I will. Maa bhook lag rahi hain, kuch khaane ko do na...

Arey kartik, How is your work? Liking the new place?

Kartik: I am enjoying it. New people, challenges. Very exciting. Lucky to have a good mentor at work Priya. I am learning a lot. Once your back from your conference we should hang out during the weekend.. Kyun?

Priya: Sure.

Everybody at Priya's house enjoy the evening with some talk, and watching tv, food. Priya packs her things for tomorrow and conference. She is excited and nervous about her presentation on Monday afternoon. She also thinks about the proposal. The boy has some of the things that I was always looking for... But I have raised my hopes a couple of times .. but things have not worked out.. with regard to arranged marriage... Be positive Priya... She says to herself... And starts reading a book. A nighttime book... A few pages before she drifts off to sleep.

Priya is up and ready to head out.

Priya: Maa, papa I am heading out.

Shipra and Sudhir: Ok. Take care beta. Good luck. Drive safe. Call us when you reach there.

Kartik: Priya, I am sure you will be amazing in the conference. I burnt a CD for the travel. Until yesterday I thought you will be travelling with colleagues. How come driving by yourself?

Priya: They decided to go later in the evening. I wanted to go settle down a bit and then make a trip to chamundi hills. Also I think, they are planning on coming back on Tuesday evening. I have to stay on Wednesday, I meeting another attendee from the conference in the morning.

Kartik: Oh Ok... Chal Have fun. And Good luck.

Priya: Thanks. See you on Wednesday.

Priya heads out to Mysore driving in her car. Here Krishna's Son has left the hotel to the conference as well. Conference begins on Sunday morning and ends on Tuesday night. Krishna calls Shipra, and both of them request time as their kids are out of town.
