Chapter 15

Her heart beat faster as she climbed the stairs to their terrace that afternoon. She had seen Raman walk towards the stairs with his business newspaper. Determined to finish off with the task that his mother had trusted upon her she had marchred after him. Muttering prayers to murgan, she gathered all her strength to climb the final step into the terrace.

He was sitting on one of the chairs, immersed in the paper at hand. She coughed to grab his attention but was rewarded with silence.

"ummm... Raman"

"hmmm..."

She frowned at his nonchalentness, two hours ago he wasn't able to keep his attention off her and now he wasn't even listening "Its not like I have all the time of my life to talk to you or that I even want to talk to you so it won't harm to pay attention because its important" she said with a hint of irritation.

"Who told you that I'm not paying attention? I heard every word right from the coughing part. Don't tell me the important thing is..." he mimiked her voice "...stay away from me Mr. Bhalla"

"No its not that" she said looking away

He put his paper down "good that you don't want me to stay away from you" he smirked

"No no no no" she hurriedly corrected herself "I didn't mean that" she glared at him when he gave her naughty expressions "I meant that there is something else too"

"Go on"

She smirked mentally thinking that the smirk on his face will soon be replaced into agony as he hears about his wedding plans. She cleared her throat and said with a fake authority "Your mother wants me to convince you to get married to a girl she visited recently"

"Who gave my mother the idea that I'll listen to you" he said picking up the paper and pretending to read

Her smirk grew wider "Exactly that's what I told her but she won't listen" she moved towards the exit

"fine, I'll listen to you" he said, she halted in her steps and turned back

"WHAT?" she wondered if she had heard it right

He smirked behind the paper and put it down again, this time making an innocent face "My mother is right, how can I refuse you. I'll do as you want me to"

She stared at him for a long time "your mother wants that, not me"

"Oh so you don't want me to get married to that girl"

"No no no" she corrected herself for the second time. He was such a fox, she thought "I mean... You... you... Can do whatever you want, that's none of my business" she said bravely

He stood up and slowly made his way to her. He halted right next to her, put his hands inside his pocket and said with a wry smile "None of your business?...We will see"

She paced to and fro in her room, it has been a week since their little talk in the terrace; he didn't make any effort to corner her anymore. Her frown grew with each passing moment. She heard her mother say one evening that Raman had agreed for the marriage, he even met the girl and they seemed to have really liked each other. She couldn't believe how shameless that man could be, one moment he was clinging to her and the next moment he commited to someone else. It was so easy for him, to move from her to another woman. And here she thought he felt something for her. Her nose flared with anger...hold on... why was she angry? He was doing the right thing; he would have been cheating his wife had he still flirted with her. Unwanted tears clouded her eyes, confusing her even more; why was she crying? Why did she feel like she was losing everything all over again? And why did it feel like a betrayl? No, he broke no promises because she didn't let him make any promise in the first place...

Ruhi, she remembered, yes she was crying for Ruhi, his marriage would mean that Ruhi wouldn't need her any longer. Her heart shrunk at the thought as a howl escaped her lips. Why didn't she think about this before? How could this escape her notice, she was so buzy thinking about Ruhi's father that she didn't even spare a thought about Ruhi. She felt guilty and angry at herself, she loved Ruhi the most, Ruhi was her prority; so when did that priority shift? No she won't let anything shift her focus away from her daughter.

She wiped away her tears and rushed to the Bhalla house and rang the bell impatiently. Romi opened the door

"where is Ruhi?" she asked

"oh oh... Take a breath Ishu di, she's in her room"

She smiled "I missed her, I'll just go and meet her"

She walked past the entire family sitting in the drawing room and could see him staring at her from the corner of her eyes. She didn't stop until she was inside Ruhi's room.

There she was concentrating hard on the paper at hand, papers and colours spread all over the bed.

"Ruhi... What is my baby doing?"

Ruhi looked up and gave her best smile "Ishi aunty, look what I made"

Ishita went and sat beside Ruhi and cuddled her to her lap "Show me" she said and kissed Ruhi on her cheek from behind.

Ruhi raised the paper vertically for Ishita to look "welcome home mumma" written beautifully over some patterns that Ruhi had painted beautifully.

Her stomach knotted as bile rose in her throat, she felt numb. Yes she was right, she is losing everything all over again only this time there is no one to blame but her destiny.

"its beautiful, baccha. Your mummy will love it" She said trying hard to stop her tears

"sacchi Ishi aunty? Papa says so too" Ruhi said grinning, she continued "Papa says she is very nice, and I asked if she is as nice as my Ishi aunty and he says yes, he says she is as nice and pretty as you" she informed "I am so happy, now I'll have both you and her but I'll love you so much more I promise" Ruhi said as she raised her head to gently kiss Ishita's cheek and then giggled.

Ishita hugged Ruhi tight and finally let her tears fall freely to its will...

He slowly moved away from the door and turned towards his room. He couldn't stand there and see her cry anymore...

He heard a soft knock on his door, without looking back from the window he said "come in"

He felt her even before he heard her. He took a deep breath as she stood by him

"I know I shouldn't have come to you" she said hesitantly

He smiled "Isn't it weird how many times we find ourselves by this window? You have almost owned it by your presence"

She looked up, her searching eyes met his. She thought she saw longing in them before he turned away to look at the view outside.

"Its about Ruhi" she said

"It was always about Ruhi wasn't it?" he mocked

She remained unfazed "Isn't it weird how I'm the one losing the most from this wedding?" she asked "My Ruhi, I have to give her away to your wife" the last word came out more bitterly than she intended it to "You don't know what it feels to lose everything all over again"

"who knows that better than me" he said "Don't worry, your Ruhi will be as much your's as she has always been. If you want it on papers, I can do that too"

She looked at him, shocked "No, I didn't mean that. I don't intend to be selfish, I just wanted to know if I can see Ruhi..."

"She is yours, you can see her whenever you want. Anything that you love will always be yours. You just have to say" he glanced at her

She was taken aback. After a moment of silence she gathered her strength and asked "What is she like?"

"Just like you" he replied with a smile that broke her heart

"Had I asked you not to marry her..."

"I won't have said yes to the marriage..." he sighed "...like I said you just have to ask"

She held her breath and slowly asked "Even now?"

"always..." came the reply.
