Good Bye Mom

Day by day Aradhana's condition was deteriorating. Nowadays Mrityunjay comes home early so that he can spend more time with Aradhana. Tara stays in Aradhana's room. In this way one week went by.

One day, again Aradhana's condition started getting worse. The nurse immediately called the hospital.
Tara was sitting near Aradhana, holding her hand.

Aradhana was breathing heavily, "Tara...Tara..."

"Yes mom, I am here," said Tara sobbing slightly.

By this time, Dadaji had come into the room and was standing behind Tara.

"Child, I know now I will be no more after a few moments."

"Mom, why are you saying this?... All will be fine."
Tara was trying not to cry but she was not able to control her tears and started crying.

"Child ...Tara... Don't cry for me. I am happy ... I am happy for you...You got married ...and that too, to a person like Mrityunjay... A person like Mrityunjay is rare and hard to find, Tara. Never lose him, always be with him. Be his support, be his power. He was always with you when you needed him, now it's your turn Tara..." Aradhana's eyes were closing.

"Mom...mom..." Tara screamed.

The doctor came, checked her and declared her dead.

Mrityunjay entered the room and heard the doctor's declaration. He came near Aradhana's dead body and sat there. A quick flashback of his first visit to the hospital went through his mind, the way she had scolded the nurse saying he was her son, her smiling face when he had kept the marriage proposal for Tara, the first time when he called her mom, her happy and sad face while applying mehndi to Tara. One by one, all moments played in his mind up till today morning when before going to the office he had come to meet her and she was smiling. A tear trickled from the corner of his eye. He controlled his pain seeing Tara sobbing and blabbering.

Dadaji was consoling her, but her loss was so deep that the consoling was not working.

*****

By evening Mrityunjay returned home after cremating Aradhana's body.

Tara was still in Aradhana's room. Dadaji was sitting in the hall. Seeing Mrityunjay coming, Dadaji directed him towards Aradhana's room for Tara.

Tara was still crying.
Mrityunjay came near Tara.
"Mom...mom..." Tara was continuously sobbing.

Seeing her in so much pain after her world was destroyed, broke his heart. He tried to console her. He kept his hand on Tara's shoulder.

Tara turned to see whose hand it was. Seeing it was Mrityunjay, she stood up and hugged him and started crying loudly.

At first, Mrityunjay hesitated but then seeing a hug was the only way to console her, he hugged her back. Tara was crying from the last four to five hours continuously, so she fainted in Mrityunjay's arms. Mrityunjay carried her to their room and called the family doctor.

The doctor examined her and said, "She fainted because of exhaustion. As you are saying today her mom died, so she is in shock and trauma. I have prescribed medicines, make sure to give her on time."

As soon as the doctor finished his sentence, Mrityunjay asked worriedly, "Doctor, what else needs to be done so that she recovers soon?"

"Mr. Shekhawat, your wife needs to be kept away from memories which remind her of her mom. She needs time to accept this, and she will understand it soon. Try to keep her happy. This is the only way along with medicines that will help in her quick recovery." The doctor left the room.

Mrityunjay sat near Tara. Watching her in so much pain was unbearable for him. He went to his study, opened the drawer of his table and removed a cigarette. He was going to smoke after a gap of one month. He was about to light it when Raghu Kaka came and informed him about Tara becoming conscious. He threw the cigarette away and ran to their room.

When Tara woke up, she was feeling quite weak. She was still sobbing.

Mrityunjay went near her. "Tara, you need to take rest."
"Mrityunjay, mom...mom..."

He kept his hand on her shoulder and said, "Tara, mom is no more. And wherever she is, she must be watching her daughter who was brave but is now crying like a coward. Tara, don't feel sorry for her. Death freed her from this painful life. She was dying every day and seeing each day bringing death closer to her was more painful. She is now happier and is at peace. So don't cry, Tara. Mom will not like her daughter crying." Saying this, he wiped her tears.

Tara was silently listening to Mrityunjay. She was surprised hearing this from the stubborn man who she had met nearly three months ago. Today he sounded stronger than ever. He had control over his grief seeing Tara in pain.

*****

Next day Tara got up and again as was her routine, she went into Aradhana's room. Seeing no one there, she remembered yesterday's cruel happening which was now a reality. She was again about to cry but remembered Mrityunjay's words and stopped. Just a drop of tear came to her eyes.

At the breakfast table, seeing Tara not eating her breakfast, Mrityunjay suggested he was not going to the office.

But Tara refused this saying she was fine. And Dadaji too supported Tara that she was fine and Mrityunjay didn't need to stay at home.
Seeing the assurance in Tara's eyes, Mrityunjay left for office.

*****

Tara was feeling weak, so she went to her room to rest. After two hours, she woke up. She brought the radio and her stuff from Aradhana's room and started arranging them. After arranging them, she stood near the window watching the green fields near the mansion.
Raghu Kaka came to her room to check whether she needed anything.

"Kaka, whose fields are those?" Tara questioned him while watching the green fields and the stable.

"Oh... that... It's Shekhawat's." After replying to this, he left the room.

Tara felt at peace seeing those open green fields.

*****

In the evening, Tara went there after taking Dadaji's permission.

She was feeling good in this silent environment of the field. The chirping of birds, the slight gushing of leaves was singing the song of life.

Tara was outside Shekhawat Mansion for the first time after marriage. Till now she didn't get time as she was busy with Aradhana. She was walking slowly, thinking about life and how in one month her life had changed. After roaming for an hour, Tara returned to the mansion. Today she was feeling better than yesterday.

After dinner, Mrityunjay himself gave her medicines and made her sleep. After Tara slept, Mrityunjay kept watching her.

Riding Lessons and Maria
Part (a)

Next day, after Mrityunjay went to the office, Tara was feeling restless and so she went to the fields. Today she proceeded further and after a walk of 10 minutes, she reached the stable.

There she saw a brown and white mare. She caressed her and rubbed her back and then gave her food and water. She sat there and started thinking about random things to divert her mind from her mother to other things so that she can come out of her grief. She left that place after 3 or 4 hours when she started feeling better.

Mrityunjay was happy seeing Tara recover. Next day, again Tara went to the stable after Mrityunjay left for the office. As the work was less in the office that day, Mrityunjay returned home early. He asked Raghu Kaka about Tara when he didn't find her in their room.

"Mrityunjay she is in the stable. Nowadays, she stays there for hours."

On hearing this, Mrityunjay went to the stable. Tara was sitting near the mare, lost in her own thoughts.

"Tara."

She lifted her head to see whose voice it was.

"Mrityunjay."

She stood seeing him there, "I was not feeling well inside the house and so came here. It's very calm here and feels good".

"Yes this place is very calm and peaceful." He said caressing his mare.

Seeing Mrityunjay's closeness to her and the mare's friendly response to Mrityunjay, she asked "Is this your mare?"

"Yes, her name is Maria." he said rubbing Maria's back.

Mrityunjay brought Maria out of the stable holding her reins and Tara followed him.

After walking in silence for a few minutes, Tara broke the silence, "Do you know horse riding?"

"Yes." Mrityunjay replied affirmatively, "And you?"

"Oh...No, I don't." Mrityunjay, seeing this conversation is diverting Tara's thoughts away from her mother, added,

"Do you want to learn?"

Tara smiled, "When I was a kid I wanted to, but now I don't."

"Why not? You can learn now also..."

He stopped and then after thinking for a moment he hesitantly said,

"If you want I can teach you."

Hearing this, Tara exclaimed, "YOU!"

Seeing Tara's disbelief, he mounted Maria, pulled on her reins and galloped towards the open green fields.

Tara was amazed seeing his expertise in climbing and his perfect control on Maria. His long hair was flying as he rode Maria. After 5 minutes, he reached where Tara was standing after completing one round of the field.

He got down from Maria and asked, "Now, tell me do you want to learn horse riding?"

"If the teacher is so good at it then I will." Both smiled.

"Ok then from tomorrow evening I will start teaching you".

They walked quietly for half an hour with Maria and after that they returned home.

*****

Next day, after Mrityunjay went to the office, Tara went into Dadaji's room,

"Dadaji, I never gave you time. I am sorry."

Dadaji smiled and said, "Don't worry Tara Bahu. We can talk now."

She started by asking about his health. Slowly slowly they developed a bond of friendship.

Dadaji was showing their old albums which contained Mrityunjay's childhood photos with Jairaj and Nirmala. She wanted to ask about Jairaj and Nirmala's death but thought it's better to ask some other day.

As evening approached, Mrityunjay was a little worried as he wanted to tell Tara that she needed to change her outfit as she can't learn riding in a saree but he was confused about how to tell her this. When he reached home, he was surprised to see Tara wearing jeans and a top. He smiled and thought, "She is smart". They went to the fields.

Mrityunjay first introduced Tara to Maria and taught her how to caress and pamper Maria as she likes it.

After that, came the time for Tara to sit on her back and she was quite frightened.

Mrityunjay demonstrated to her how to sit but still Tara was not getting it.

Then Mrityunjay kept Tara's left leg on one stirrup, then lifted her by holding her by her waist and made her sit. She was as light as a feather.

Tara felt his hand on her waist and was a little uncomfortable. His touch made her body shiver and gave her goose bumps.

Seeing Tara uncomfortable, Mrityunjay immediately moved his hands away. He held the reins and took one round of the paddock with Tara sitting on Maria. After one round, Tara wanted to get down and so they stopped.

While getting down, Tara got unbalanced and was about to fall when Mrityunjay's strong hands held her in his arms. She closed her eyes in fear and was breathing heavily.

Mrityunjay was seeing her so close to himself for the first time. He was able to hear her breathing. He was also able to smell her fragrance. In one moment, a beautiful woman was in his arms, whose skin was as soft as a rose petal. Her lips were as red as blood; her eyes were deep, which held a collection of past memories and dreams of the future.

After a moment, Tara opened her eyes, to see Mrityunjay very close to her. His long hair was touching her cheeks while his eyes showed his loneliness.

Both of them were lost in each other's eyes. Their trance broke when Mrityunjay's phone rang and they got back to their senses. Quietly they moved back to the mansion.

After dinner they sat with Dadaji, who was telling them about him and his wife, how they used to fight and how Jairaj and Nirmala used to fight. When Dadaji was talking about Jairaj and Nirmala, Mrityunjay's face showed how badly he missed them. Tara saw this and decided to ask about his parents the next day.

Riding Lessons and Maria
Part(b)

The next day, after Mrityunjay went to his office, Tara went to Dadaji and in between random talk, she asked, "Dadaji, can I know how Mrityunjay's mom and dad died?"

After hearing this question, Dadaji face grew serious.

"Tara Bahu that was a terrible night. Mrityunjay was at home with me and Jairaj and Nirmala were returning from a party when their car met with a very dangerous accident. Their half-burnt dead bodies were brought home. Mrityunjay was eight years old that time.

He was a kid but he had to face the reality. After that accident, he became a bit quiet. But after two or three years, he was normal again because of his friend Radha, his best friend. But last year when Mrityunjay and Radha were returning from a party, they met with an accident. Mrityunjay's left hand was fractured but Radha was seriously injured and didn't make it and died on her way to the hospital. After that devasting night he became more silent and even more of an introvert."

He looked at Tara and continued, "But after your arrival, he is coming back to normal life. Bless you Tara Bahu."

She smiled.

After talking to Dadaji, she went to her room and switched on the radio. It was broadcasting a phone-in radio show "Dil Se Dil Tak" where the people called up the RJ and requested him to play a song of their choice.

She was arranging her closet and listening to the radio when she saw the bangles gifted by Mrityunjay. She touched its edge and got goose bumps; she felt his hands around her waist and she was shy and blushing and at that time the radio played.

~Jab bhi zara tumne chua
Zindagai halki si gudgudi kar gai

Chalki hui thi phele se mein
Thodi se aur bhi bhar gai
Aur bhi bhar gai
Gudgudi kar gai~

She was still blushing when the song finished and she switched off the radio.

*****

It was evening time and Tara was already at the stable, trying to sit on Maria. She was trying to sit but again and again she failed. At her last try, she had just kept her left foot on the stirrup when a pair of hands held her from her waist and made her sit. She immediately turned to see whose hand it was and smiled seeing it was Mrityunjay.

"You will learn quickly," said Mrityunjay, arranging Maria's reins.

Then he climbed on the mare and sat behind Tara.

Tara again got goose bumps when his hands held her to teach how to hold the reins. Her petite structure was easily covered by Mrityunjay's strong hands.

Mrityunjay was telling her how to and when to tighten the reins and when to loosen it, but he was not able to concentrate because of Tara's sweet fragrance which was distracting him. They continued their practice.

While ridding, Tara's bun got lose and her hair spread over Mrityunjay's face. He was immersed in the fragrance of her hair when Tara by mistake pulled on Maria's reins which caused Mrityunjay and Tara to fall on the ground. When she tried to get up, her hair became tangled with Mrityunjay's brooch resulting in Tara falling on Mrityunjay again as she winced in pain. They were close enough to feel each other's breath. Mrityunjay carefully removed her tangled hair from his brooch. After getting up, they went back to the mansion.

That night, Mrityunjay sketched Tara riding a horse with her hair open flying in the wind.

Each day they practiced horse riding during the evening. And within one week, Tara was able to ride Maria and take her for a slow trot.
