Chapter 36:
Karan sat across the table from Pathak. Kabir stood leaning against the window with his arms crossed across his chest, deep in thought.
"Kabir, what is it? Why did you call me here so suddenly? Is everything all right?"
Kabir continued to stare out the window silently as Karan took matters into his own hands.
"Pathak ji, what are you hiding from us?"
Pathak gave a look of confusion. "What do you mean Karan beta? Why would I hide anything from you?"
"Pathak ji, what is this?" Karan pulled out the letter from his pocket and handed it to Pathak, whose face lost all color as soon as he realized what the paper was.
"How did you get this?"
"Where's papa?"
Pathak looked away from Karan and closed his eyes as he took a deep breath. Turning back to face Karan, he handed the letter back to him.
"Whatever you have found out, I cannot erase from your memory. But I urge you not to prod further into the matter. I cannot say anything more than that."
"It means that Papa is alive then, right Pathak ji? But how is that possible? And if he is alive then why is he hiding?"
"I can't answer your questions Karan beta. I don't have the right to do so. I can only assure you of one thing; that all of your questions will be answered when the time is right. Now if you'll excuse me, I have some important matters to attend to."
As Pathak stood up to leave, he glanced at Kabir who had not moved from his position or spoken a single word since he had first arrived.
"Kabir, I know that you must have hundreds of questions whirling through your head right now, but please put them to rest for the time being."
Saying that, Pathak gathered his stuff, gave a quick supportive pat to Karan's back, and began to make his way towards the door.
"Pathak."
The lawyer paused with his hand on the doorknob and turned his head as Kabir called out to him. Kabir moved away from the window.
"Please just give him this."
Pathak outstretched his hand to receive the cream and gold colored envelope that Kabir was holding out to him and left the apartment without another word.

Meanwhile, Rachna sat in her room with her laptop and looked through the decoration designs that Pallavi had emailed to her. As she was going through the designs and making notes for herself, someone knocked on her door. Looking up from her work, Rachna saw Sumit at the door.
"Sumit? What's up? Did you need something?"
Sumit entered the room and sat on the bed to face Rachna.
"No, I was just bored so I figured I'd just see what you were up to. Are you busy with something?"
Rachna closed her laptop and notebook and turned her attention to her cousin.
"Kind of, I was looking through some designs for the decorations. But it's okay, I need a break anyway. So, tell me what's going on with you."
"Nothing much, just the same old. Finished up with my internship so now I'm just taking some time off before I join Papa at his clinic. But enough about me, tell me about you. Why this sudden decision to get married Rachu? I mean, don't get me wrong...Kabir seems like a nice guy and all but..."
"I love him Sumit and that's a big enough reason for me to get married to him. He's perfect for me in every way."
"That's all fine Rachu but why rush into marriage so soon? After all, how long have you known the guy? I mean, do you know how big of a shock it was for us when Sneha aunty called mummy to invite her to your wedding? Papa, Sangeeta chachi, Gopal chaacha, they were all just as surprised by the news."
Rachna bit her lower lip.
"I know it seems sudden Sumit, but...but I...I know Kabir well enough to say that he's the one for me."
"I don't know why Rachu, but I get the feeling that you're not telling me the entire truth. But anyways, if you think Kabir is the one for you then I'm happy for that. He seems like a nice guy and it looks like he loves you too. Okay, I guess I'll let you get back to work then. Good night."
Rachna watched as Sumit left the room, feeling guilty that she had to hide the truth from him. She glanced at the clock and saw that it was almost 10:30. She decided to message Kabir and see if he was still awake.
Hi hubby. Asleep yet?
As she waited patiently for a reply, Rachna went back to looking through the decoration ideas. Periodically glancing at her phone to see if Kabir had replied back, Rachna worked for an hour or so before calling it a night herself.
When Rachna awoke the next morning, she was disappointed to find that Kabir still hadn't replied to her message. Concluding that he must be busy with his work, she got ready quickly before she joined her aunts downstairs. It had been planned during dinner the night before that Rachna, Sneha, Seema, and Sangeeta would go shopping, while Pihu and Sumit handled the younger kids and took them on a tour of Mumbai.
-----------------------
"Disha, are you feeling better now?"
The little girl smiled and nodded as she closely examined the Barbie band-aid that was now adorning her elbow. Disha smiled even brighter when she was handed a lollipop.
"Thank you...uh...uh."
Disha looked in confusion towards her older brother Dolu when she realized that she didn't know the identity of the person who had just tended to her wound and given her the lollipop. Dolu sat next to his younger sister and whispered into her ear.
"Thank you Gunjan didi."
Gunjan smiled as Disha gave her a sticky sugary kiss on her cheek.
"You're welcome Disha."
As Gunjan left the living room, where Disha, Dolu, and Shipra were now busy watching TV, she dropped the first aid box when she bumped into Sumit, who was busy on his phone.
"I'm so sorry Pihu di. Let me get that for you."
Sumit picked up scattered supplies of the first aid kit and stood up. He was surprised to find himself standing in front of Gunjan.
"Oh Gunjan, it's you. Um, I thought it was...I'm sorry."
"It's okay. Actually, Pihu di got a call from Murli jiju so she asked me to give first aid to Disha. Anyways, excuse me."
Just as Gunjan was walking upstairs to her room, she heard the front door open. Looking down at the entryway, she saw that Rachna, Seema, Sangeeta, and her mother had returned from their shopping trip. Wanting to avoid any contact with Rachna's aunts, Gunjan rushed into her bedroom and shut the door behind her.
-------------------------
Rachna excused herself while Sangeeta chaachi fussed over the minor scrape on Disha's elbow. She looked at her phone with a frown as she found no messages from Kabir. Dropping all of the shopping bags on the floor at the foot of her bed, Rachna called Kabir anxiously. She breathed a sigh of relief when he finally picked up on the seventh ring.
"Hi Rachna."
"Hi Kabir. How are you?"
"I'm...uh...I'm okay Rachna. Anyways, what happened? Everything okay at home?"
"Yeah Kabir, everything's fine here. But you tell me, are you okay?"
"Me? Yeah, why do you ask?"
"Because you still haven't replied to my message from last night and you didn't call me either. Are you okay?"
"Yeah, Rachna I'm fine. I'm...I...I was just a bit busy today."
"Right, that's what I figured. Anyways, what are my dear hubby's plans for tonight? Perhaps a Skype date could be on the charts?"
"Uh Rachna, I still have quite a bit of work left to finish up so I don't think I'll be able to tonight. Maybe tomorrow though."
"Oh okay, I guess that's fine. I'll see you tomorrow at Pallavi's office then?"
"Yeah, sure. Bye."
"Bye."
Rachna hung up the call pensively, noting that Kabir had seemed preoccupied with something during the conversation. She wondered what could be worrying him so much that he had turned down a Skype date with her and even forgotten to wish her a goodbye in his usual flirty manner.
-------------------------
Rachna glanced at her watch for the fourth time as Pallavi pulled out some fabric swatch samples corresponding to the designs that Rachna had liked.
"Pallavi, please excuse me for a moment."
Pallavi nodded as Rachna moved away from the desk and called Kabir for the third time. Frustrated, she clicked her phone shut and threw it into her purse when he didn't answer. Returning back to where Pallavi was sitting, Rachna took her own seat.
"I guess it'll just be the two of us today Pallavi."
