Part 33

Devaki-Vasudev-Ugrasen Freed--Eklavya

"Where is the royal prison, will anyone tell us ?" asked Balraam after hurling away the eighth and the last brother of Kans with the tooth of Kuvalyapeed. A guard took them to the prison.

Devaki squirmed her eyes as a bright light entered their cabin. She could see the silhouette of a boy holding a bright lamp. She shook Vasudev who sat meditating facing the other wall. He didn't respond. The boy quietly broke all her chains as if they were mere threads. She stared at him, racking her brains to remember the face, while he slowly unlocked the chains that were binding Vasudev. He then went and sat in front of Vasudev, with a mischievous smile playing on his lips. He looked greatly interested in what his father was doing, and then suddenly, he whistled loudly. Vasudev jumped up, astonished, while Krishna broke into peals of laughter and Balraam hid behind Akroor saying, "He's not my brother ! He's not !" Akroor turned, "What ? Then who did I pick up from Gokul ?"
"No Uncle, what I meant to say was, he's not my brother for now. Mother says that Father is very strict, so if he gets angry, that that monkey will drag me into the punishment as well, and so you turn around and don't tell him that I'm hiding behind you !" Vasudev was not angry, he tried to recollect the face. The eyes where the same, the smile was ! The boy confirmed his guess, "I am Krishna, your eighth son."
"And I'm Balraam, Mother Rohini's son."
Tears trickled down the faces of the two as they pulled the two boys into tight embrace. Understanding that too of happiness might not be good for them Krishna spoke in a matter-of-fact tone, "So, now that you're free, I think we should go up to Grandpa Ugrasen and Grandma Padmavati. Come with me, Mother, this way."

Soon after, Ugrasen was re-installed in his position. Vasudev was made the crown prince. A few of Kans' followers were still left in Mathura, but they decided to shift to Magadh, with Kans' two queens, Asti and Prapti, when they saw the two boys standing on either sides of their grandfather with the giant teeth of the elephant, their eyes challenging any opposer.

"Where did that dog go ? Just in time when I need it !" exclaimed Arjun. Yudhishthir said, "Calm down, Arjun, it was just a poor little deer !" Bheem made a face, "But we could have had a feast tonight ! Only if that dog was here !" Yudhishthir Couldn't Control His Laughter, "Are You Losing Faith On Arjun's Arrows ?"
"No Brother, it's just that, the dog would have been a great help !"
"Nakul, it was a dog, not a powerful mantra to stimulate a weapon !"
"Then why couldn't Brother Arjun hit the deer ?"
"Sahdev, Brother Yudhishthir shook my hand just at the last moment, and missed it !"
"Yes, I did. Any objections ?"
"No Brother."
"But where is the dog ?"
The Pandavas out on hunting and their faithful dog had gone missing. After searching for a long time, they came up to a small hut. They saw a boy practising archery. They also saw their dog which ran up to them expecting help. Seven arrows were piercing its mouth. Seeing the brothers wondering about how to save it, the boy spoke up, "Don't worry, pull out the arrows one by one, starting from the centre. It'll be alright. And I'm sorry, I hurt him, but he's too noisy. And yes, I guess you haven't taught him the difference between a man and an animal." Arjun was more astonished than hurt at this comment, "Who Are you ? And where did you attain such a high knowledge of archery ?"
"From Guru Dron. I am his student, Eklavya. See, there's a statue of him. I made it myself. Isn't it good ?" Eklavya showed him with pride. "Yes it is, but I just remembered an important work ! Wait here, I'll be back. Just wait for me !" Arjun ran off.

"Sir ? SIR ? Where are you ? Sir ?"
Kripi came out. She was quite surprised to see such an excited Arjun, "What happened son ?"
"Ma'am, where's sir, I need to speak to him just now !" Kripi presumed that it was quite a serious matter because Arjun did not, generally, forget to pay his respects and keep his eyes down in front of her. She said, "Wait, I'll call him outside."

"Sir ? Why didn't you teach me your best skills ? I want to learn them ! Am I not worthy of those skills ?"
"What did I not teach you ? And where did you see such skills ? My son, I've taught you every single thing that I knew. Then ?"
Arjun's shouts had drawn a crowd around the teacher and the student. Duryodhan smirked. He had longed for such a moment when that pest of an Arjun would somehow show some kind of disrespect and would be punished. Arjun pored out the whole incident in a single breath. Guru Dron hurried with Arjun to the cottage of Eklavya. Duryodhan spitted on the ground, "Talk of favouritism, Huh !"

Dron stood watching while Eklavya showed all his skills one after the another. After sometime Dron found himself saying, "Wait ! How did you do that ! I did not understand very well !" Soon, it was clear that Eklavya not only knew more than Arjun but also Sage Dron ! "Fine. If you claim that I've taught you all this, that I do deserve a gurudakshina (teacher's fees), isn't it ?"
"Yes Sir, of course you do ! Just tell me what you want, even if its my life, I'll give you !"
"Life ? No, no, that's too much ! But, if I really am your teacher, then give me the thumb of your right hand."
"Yes, Sir !"
In the next moment the thumb was lying at the feet of Guru Dron, while Eklavya smiled at them. Arjun was very taken aback with the turn of the events, and he was partially dragged back to the ashram by Dron. The next day, Dron declared proudly that Arjun was his best student, and that he was the greatest archer that this world had ever seen. After a few days, while resting Arjun said to his brothers, "I wanted that position of the best archer, but not like this !"

Its beautifully written, Radhikerani

But why did Dronacharya ask Ekalavya thumb of right hand ? Why not left hand thumb?
Pl can you post a pic of Arjun releasing an arrow from star Mbh? You will see that index finger and middle finger were used to release an arrow form the bow.
