Children hang up their wishes in closed envelopes on a tree a month before Christmas and these envelopes are then given to people who bring the children the gifts they wish for. For the last seven years, the group has been playing the role of coordinators. Calling it Secret Santa, 19-year-old Diana said, "We just help people to connect with underprivileged children. We give a unique code to each envelope and don't mention the child's name. That is how the giver becomes Secret Santa for the child." Secret Santa is a Christmas tradition wherein people send gifts to each other while remaining anonymous.
"We were surprised when we read wishes in envelopes. In one of the orphanages, 30 children had asked for 'nagada suit'. When we asked them, they said that 'nagada suit' was the outfit Kareena Kapoor wore in the film, 'Jab We Met'. People visited several markets and finally got nagada suits for children," said another coordinator in the group. She, however, said that most children ask for simple gifts such as notebooks, clothes and toys.
The group visited Muskaan, an orphanage in Badshapur on Sunday, to distribute the gifts among children.
Meera, 12, who received a pair of blue jeans and a red top, said, "The joy of unwrapping a gift and finding exactly what I wished for is exciting. I want to thank all Secret Santas who work so hard to get these gifts for us." Along with gifts, people also sent greeting cards and chocolates for kids.
