"I think we all have had enough excitement for one day. I shall adjourn the court for today. We resume tomorrow at 9 a.m sharp" with that she stood up and walked out. Asthas was taken out by the female officers and along with two more constable. As she was being taken away her eyes met shlok's once more. His eyes spoke to her. But she didn't want to listen. Not yet. She looked forward and walked out of the courtroom from the side entrance.
Arjun and Shlok was waiting for SSP Kannar in the hallway. He was seen speaking to another senior Judge. As the judge excused himself and walked away another walked towards him. Tyson flashed the biggest smile they had ever seen on him. It was none other than Judge Shabnam Ali Khan. Of course they thought!
"So... How are you Jay" asked Shabnam
"I'm fine Shabi?" answered Jay
"I'm glad" she said genuinely
"Me too" said the Jay
Shlok and Arjun could see the mutual admiration they had for each other.
"Who knew! Jay the Swan saviour. Any other hidden talents you have acquired"
"That's about it. I'm afraid" he said with a grin. Seeing this Shlok and Arjun was thinking is this the same Toothless Tyson that never smiles. They had never seen him smiling this much. This guy sure is full of surprises.
"How is Usman and the boys" asked SSP Kannar
"All doing good. Rizwan my youngest likes to box. He's quite good at it too. Heard you got married. She's a very lucky girl. I'm very happy for you Jay"
"Thank you Shabi"
"Finally someone managed to tie you down"
"It was a toss up between the Naxsls and Fiery red head. I chose the latter. She was way prettier and cooks great food too. So it wasn't a hard decision to make"
"As long as she didn't have to drag you down the isle" said she grinning.
"Escaped the treacherous Naxsls only to be captured for life" he said with a wide grin. Shlok and Arjun was keeping watch. They knew he must be talking about his Janie girl.
"Scars look good on you" said Shabnam.
"But they betray me when I blush. But my Janie thinks I look pretty with them. So no complaints."
"I thought I have seen everything. Apparently not" said she still smiling.
"I'm glad to have enlighten you Judge ji. Well...My boys are waiting, so Shabi...see you tomorrow at the circus" he said looking towards Shlok and Arjun who was caught ogling at them.
"You're the ring master and Poor fellow Garg the clown. See you too...the Swan saviour" she said.
"You seem to be disappointed with my Swan saving act" said he
"I'm impressed to say the least. It's totally you Jay"
"I'm relieved" with that parting words Jay Kannar walked away.
Arjun and Shlok was amused and dumbfounded. Tyson the lover boy.
"Let's go girls. The free show is over. The rest you have to pay. Or you want to wait till you get a citation for loitering" he was back in his Tyson avatar.
The next day everyone was back with renewed energy. Garg with more vengeance. He had to salvage some sort of respect. He was made the laughing stock by everyone. Including that pint size black widow. He was determined to keep his track record in tact.
Reputation is everything. They remember the last case you won or lost. Not the one before that.
Manav Garg is a self made man. Married to a former Miss. India. After a failed movie career finally landed in his lap. According to her she was the most luckiest to be married to such an amazing guy. She didn't want to have kids because she's worried her figure will go out of shape. He pays for the silicone and the D&Gs and the MKs and she plays her part very well, that of a Trophy wife. She didn't mind the fact he was a skirt chaser. She lived in her bubble where all was hunky dory. She drives a Red Aston Martin V8 Vantage. So she was very well taken care of indeed. Her friends envied her. At least she thought so.
He was very proud of her Newly acquired assets. She was too.
Lawrence was back with Sylvia. Garg with his small army of interns.
The courtroom was a buzz, much more than what it was yesterday. There seemed to be more people as well. Astha was yet to arrive. Shlok and Arjun along with SSP Kannar was there as well. Few minutes prior to the honourable Judge Shabnam Ali Kahn's arrival Astha was escorted to her table in the front.
She was again dressed in a pale yellow dress. Hair tied and Shlok noticed that she looked very tired. Lack of sleep he thought. He remembered how she used to look in the mornings when she's not had a good nights sleep. Her eyes will be swollen just like today. He felt guilty. He felt responsible. He's been having trouble sleeping ever since she left as well.
Garg looked at Astha with a pompous attitude. As if to say I've got you today. You're going down. He looked very confident. Shlok seeing his attitude didn't like it one bit. But there was nothing he could do about it other than just wait and watch what dirty trick he's gonna play today.
Meanwhile today Ajith and Brijesh were to take the stand. They were kept in a waiting room with plenty of protection. Mary in another room.
Arjun was very fidgety the moment Garg walked in. Cracking his knuckles. Shifting in his seat for the the umpteenth time. Finally SSP Kannar intervened. "Gokhle whose the lucky girl and when is the wedding" Asked SSP Kannar.
"there's no girl and no wedding sir" he said baffled.
"You sure seem to be more nervous than a groom to be. Get a grip of yourself. She won't find out about the po*n"
"I don't watch po*n sir"
"Of course you don't. You want me to hold your hand then?"
"No sir. I'm good"
"Ok! This was a one time offer. Next time hold Geethas hand" he seemed to be sad with the refusal to hold the hand. Arjun was left even more confused. Have I offended Tyson? Did he really want to hold my hand? What's gotten in to him. Seeing his long lost lady love seemed to have re-wired his head. First he calls me the prettiest now he wants to hold my hand. What's going on with him. May be he's having a mid-life crisis. Not sure with his identity.
"What's going on man?" he was back when Shlok asked him seeing his pathetic state.
"Nothing. Can we please change places" he pleaded with Shlok. SSP Kannar heard his puppy talking. He knew what he was feeling. Misguided soul he thought.
"Stay put" Arjun heard coming from Tyson's side.
"Don't flatter yourself Gokhle! I still dig my wife. Besides she's much more prettier and has better legs" hearing this Shlok almost burst out laughing. What's with these two star crossed lovers? Shlok was left thinking. Arjun wished the ground would open up and swallow him whole. He was dying of embarrassment.
Just then the judge walked in. And the second day of court proceedings got on its way in its earnest.
"Boys and girls my warning still stand. So keep that in mind. If you want to get this over with ASAP then I suggest you stick to the facts and refrain from calling in witnesses to make you look good. It could back fire on you. Mr. Almeida! I allowed you back in my courtroom with the assurance that you'd keep your emotions in check and mouth closed. Is that clear Mr. Almeida? And you too Detective" she said looking straight at Shlok. He nodded.
"Ok. Now that we all understand each other, let's get on with the case. Mr. Garg call your next witness" Judge Khan said.
"I call upon on Ajith Sharma to the stand" Garg said with a bit of theatrics. There was hush and light chatter. Everybody seemed to be reassuring each other who he is.
Just then one of the court clerks approached the bench and handed over a paper. She read it and all eyes was on her. She put the paper down and said "Mrs. Almeida and Mr.Garg please approach the bench" they did as asked. She explained something to them they nodded and walked back to their respective tables.
"Mr. Ajith Sharmas' court appointed lawyer is not available today. Hence we are unable to put him in the stand. Nor his partner Mr. Brijesh Chandran. I'd hate to let a day go to waste. So Mrs. Almeida you may call your first witness" again the courtroom was a buzz with the new information. She called for order and Astha got up to call her first witness for the defence.
"Your honour I call upon Mrs. Shafeeha Taha to the stand" said Astha.
After awhile Shafeeha Taha A.K.A Mary walked in escorted by two female constables. She was dressed in a light blue shalwar with a white head scarf. She walked in with her head held down. There was no reaction from Lawrence and Sylvia. They seemed be to unmoved as well. Shlok was watching Lawrence very intently.
She took her seat and was put under oath. She didn't look Astha in the eye at all. She avoided facing her. "Mrs. Taha I can't say I'm Gald to see you again. I wish we met under more pleasant circumstances" before she could continue "call me Mary" said Shaffeha Taha.
"Mary why don't you tell the truth?" Said Astha.
"I have nothing else to say. I have told everything to the good officers" said Mary nonchalantly.
"Then how do you explain the fingerprints and hair strands in the car that was pictured. When you claimed over and over again that you have never been inside that vehicle"
"I don't know. May be it was planted by your boy friend. He was In charge of the investigation. Why don't you tell me? I'm sure you know Him way better than me" Mary said with a sudden spur.
"Well for you're information Mr. Agnihotri has been cleared of any misconduct or malpractice by his Superiors. So he's not on trial. You and Me are"
"It's like asking the whereabouts of a thief from his own mother. Of course they'll say nothing is wrong. I stand by what I said. I was never in your Range Rover"
"Your Honour I present this as evidence" saying she took out a CD from a cover handed it over to the Judge. "Permission to play it your honour" she said.
"Objection your honour" Garg was heard for the first time for the day. "I was not informed nor given the opportunity to verify the authenticity of the contents" he concluded.
"Mrs. Almeida, has it been authenticated?" Asked her
"Yes your Honour. It was obtained by the crime unit and verified by the forensic dept"
"Objection overruled. I will allow it" said Judge Khan.
Garg slumped back into the chair with a cuss. Lucky for him he was not heard by anyone.
The visual was from a CCTV footage from an ATM. As customary with any CCTV footage it had the date and time. Which according to experts cannot be altered. It clearly showed Mary withdrawing money.
After the visual ended Astha handed over another paper to judge Khan and Garg. It was a detailed bank statement of her personal account. In it she had highlighted a day. The same day that is mentioned in the CCTV footage.
"Your honour, as you can see...Mary was seen withdrawing money from the same ATM machine at the same time that is mentioned in the statement. So what she had told earlier that she has only withdrawn once from the account is a lie. It is proven without any doubt"
"Everything she's said so far has been proven wrong with tangible evidence. She said she's never been in the car, that's was proven wrong with fingerprints and DNA evidence. The fact that she's never used the ATM card more than once was proven again with the most damning evidence. Likewise she could've withdrawn the rest of the money that was paid to to Mr. Sharma and Mr. Chandran. And she had access to my room and my wardrobe"
"Objection your honour hearsay! Mrs. Almeida is speculating" Garg seemed agitated.
"Mr. Garg, don't forget to breathe. Objection overruled. Don't act like a high school kid Mr.Garg."
"Mary why did you do it? Your were like a sister to me. If It was money you wanted I would've given it to you without any questions asked. I once did and would've done the same once more" Astha said as disappointment clearly laced in her tone.
"We were sisters? Yes...What a joke? I never considered you to be my sister. We never were and never will. I know where I stand. I don't live with my head stuck in the clouds. I live with my feet firmly grounded. Ask money so that you can feel all high and mighty and like a saint helping the poor. So generous and so giving. So open minded. I didn't want to be you're charity case. Help you look good. No thank you". Said Mary sarcastically.
"God have mercy on you! Your Honour I have no further questions" saying Ashta came back to her seat.
"Mr. Garg do you have any questions for Mrs. Shafeeha Taha" said the judge.
"I do your Honour" said Garg getting up form his seat.
"Mrs. Taha, or rather Mary, tell me do you know the man in this picture" he asked extending his hand towards her with the picture of Ajith.
"No I have never ever seen him" said Mary with a stone cold attitude.
"Tell the court Mary... you lived with Mrs. Almeida ever since she came to live at the Almeida Mansion how many times have you seen Mrs. Almeida with other men. Has she ever talked to you about miscarriages or getting an abortion"
"Never. Mrs. Almeida is the one of the... or rather the most decent persons I've ever met. She rarely left the house let alone bring anyone home. She's never suffered a miscarriage, as far as I can remember. Don't know if she had one after I left? She was the only one who Knew about my baby. I told her first. She urged me to have the baby. She even made me promise." She said feeling her stomach.
"Well sorry to burst your bubble but she's suffered a miscarriage" Garg was enjoying this.
"Your Honour is this the truth. Did she suffer a miscarriage" asked Mary not trusting what Garg was saying to her.
"He's telling the truth. Mrs. Almeida and Mr. Agnihotri lost their first baby when she was beaten while under remand custody" said judge Khan looking at Astha as well as Mary. Hearing this all her defences gave way. She remembered how much she longed for motherhood. To have a baby of her own. How happy she was when she told her about her own pregnancy. For the first time she felt guilty of the things she's done. She suffered for no fault of her own. Mary felt responsible for Asthas' miscarriage. When she was so supportive of her own unborn child. What has she done? She not only killed her own but her sisters as well. Mary the calculative manipulator vanished. She was filled with regret and remorse.
"Didi, I'm so sorry, I didn t know. So much happened and no one bothered to tell me even once I came back. I know how much you longed for a baby. You're the only one who stood by me and I sent you to hell and killed your baby. I didn't know things will turn out this way. Please forgive me didi. The one person who stood by me...they tricked me. I was told that you won't be ha..." She didn't get to finish. Her lawyer was trying to get her to stop talking. Then Garg got in the act too.
"Your Honour the witness is speculating. Can you prove any of you're claims" said Garg panicking.
"Mrs. Taha, you do know what you're saying. You're implicating yourslef. The
same things you denied ever being part of. And lying under oath in self carries a prison term" said judge Khan.
"And Mr. Garg, I don't want any more interruptions until I say so. You do it at your own risk" warned Judge Khan looking directly at Garg. He nodded with displeasure.
"Your Honour, I know what I'm doing and saying. And yes! I do have proof to prove my claims. Didi, please forgive me. I know what I say and do won't bring back your baby. But at least you'd be free and the you're name will be cleared. I just wanted to make some money. I was too proud to come and ask for it from you. I was a fool. They used my helplessness to their advantage" she was speaking nonstop. "Few days after I told Papa that I want to get married to Shabir... I got a call from Sylvia Madam". " She's lying. The little ungrateful bitch is lying. She's trying to frame us. She's in all of this" Sylvia started to hurl abuses and she was ordered out. Escorted by two female constables. Lawrence was left speechless. He didn't know what was happening. What is she saying. But he didn't seem to be totally surprised either.
Judge Khan asked Mary to continue. "She wanted to meet me. She said she can help me and Shabir get married. I met her few days later at her home. She asked me to dress up as Astha Didi and meet Ajith Sharma. She insisted I pretend to be just like her. Be in her clothes drive her car. And that I have to withdraw Rs.500,000/= from her account as well. I was assured no one will get hurt, just to make her look bad so that they can get hold of the properties which is rightfully theirs. Not hers. If i had known that they planned to actually kill Sir, I would never have agreed to any of these" she was talking through her tears. But she continued on.
"She told me the pictures will be used to defame astha didi and she'll still be ok with the money Sir has left for her. Sylvia madam was very angry and bitter about the fact that they were made to ask money from her. If their monthly provisions gets over they have to ask from her. Astha didi would right a check and give it to her. That was the practice. Sylvia madam hated it. She said Astha didi should be shown her rightful place. I was in love and I needed to get out of here before everyone found out about my of pregnancy. I was desperate for money. Both our families was against our marriage and Shabir was scared for our safety. We needed the money to settle in another city. And Sylvia madam offered me one million. That was more than we could ever imagine making. I sold my soul to the devil. And Astha didi paid for it with her own blood. I'm so sorry didi. Please forgive me" she broke down with her hands held together.
"Mary, but this is just accusations, anybody can claim anything. It's not admissible if you can't back it with proof. What proof do you have?" Asked judge Khan trying to clam her down.
"I have recorded all the conversations I had with Sylvia madam. My husband suggested that just in case soemthing went wrong". There were whispers and papers being tossed.
"My husband has it with him." Saying she looked towards a boy almost a man... in a white shirt and black pants. He stood up and handed over a phone. The court clerk took it from him and handed it over to the judge.
"I can't play this in the courtroom without first authenticating it to be legitimate and not a hoax. So we will adjourn till Mrs. Tahas' claims can be verified. The court will inform the concerned parties once the next hearing date is set"
"SSP Kannar, I shall hand you over the evidence to your trusted hands and expect you do the needful and inform me" said the Judge looking at him straight.
He nodded and the phone was handed over to him by the clerk.

Three days later the they were all back in the courtroom.
The courtroom was active as an ant hill. Whispers and few giggles as Garg walked in. He pretended not to notice any of that. Everyone was waiting with bated breath to find out if the much awaited murder trial will come to the most unexpected end or not?They were expecting it to go on for months. None was more disappointed than Manav Garg. But he was having hopes nonetheless to represent Sylvia Almeida as well. She's gonna need a good defence lawyer if all goes in black widows favour and she walks free. He kept his fingers cross for any eventuality. What ever happens there was money to be made and thats what mattered to him.
SSP Kannar, Shlok and Arjun was present, as well as Lawrence Almeida sans Sylvia for obvious reasons. Mary's father Samuel was present for the first time along with Filo. And so was Marys' husband.
Astha walked in with her customary escort dressed in a pale blue dress with tiny black polka dots. Mary was seated in the first bench. Between the two female constables.
Everyone was waiting for Judge Khan to arrive and start the proceedings. Two people that was even more anxiously waiting to know what the judge is going to make out of all the new developments was Shlok and Astha. Shlok kept looking at Astha seated in front of him. She looked nervous to say the least. Was fidgeting with the papers on the desk.
What was ironic is that it was this single incident that brought them together. In this few months they experienced so many emotions than they both have ever felt in their life until then. She and her love alone was the defining aspect in his life. She made a bitter and cold cynic into a hopeful romantic. He lost, found, lost and again found hope all within these few moths. They were given so much in such a short span of time. And in the same breath it was taken away from them as well. Even before they realised what they actually had. It was all too late. They were taken to the zenith of happiness as well as to the deepest Trenches of despair. And they had no one but themselves to thank and blame.
Looking at her one thing was made clear to Shlok without a doubt, and that is she's never gonna be replaced by anybody else. She's the only one for him. Even though she's left him and told him in no certain terms that it's over between them he's not even been tempted to look at another woman. It's as if they don't exist anymore. It's strange but he's not bothered. He was absolutely fine with it. He wouldn't have had it any other way either. He hoped one day she would be able to forgive him. He was willing to wait for her. And if and when he she does he wanted to be able to look her in the eye without any guilt or second thoughts when he says I missed you and I was waiting for you. She has made him a hopeless romantic. He was gonna live the way she wanted him to. That will be his punishment. Live for but not with her.
"Honourable Judge Shabnam Ali Khan presiding. The court is now in session" Sholk was back in the real world with those words from the court clerk.
Judge Khan took her seat and Mary was called to the witness stand. She looked calm and composed. "As per the court order the audio evidence submitted by Mrs. Taha has been authenticated by the police forensic department as well as by a private lab that specialise in this field. So that all concerned parties are happy. No one can point fingers at anyone. Mrs. Tahas' claims had been proven right. The voices have been identified without a doubt as Mrs. Sylvia Almieda. The money that was given to
Mrs. Taha too has been tracked and it was sent from a private checking account that happened to belong to Mr. Vikram Shinde, Mr. Stanley Alsmeidas' chief legal adviser"
As it turned out it was masterminded by Vikram and Sylvia. They were having an illicit affair. Sylvia used to meet Vikram often to get legal advise with regard to Lawrence. It was in fact James that had asked his good friend Vikram to look in to his sister-in-laws legal matters and help her in any way he could. Looked like he did plenty. He had changed the last will to include the clause to rid Astha of all the properties. Had made James sign the papers under false pretences. James trusting his long time friend has signed without giving it any thought nor reading the fine print. It had been his plan to give Lawrence Almeidas' power of attorney to his wife. Thus giving her the power and authority over everything that was to become his. Mary happened to be at the right place at the right time.
To say Lawrence was left shocked would've been an understatement. He was having a totally out of body experience. He didn't know what was happening right in front of his eyes. He didn't know what was real and what was fake.
The courtroom was filled with Chatter and whispers as well. Judge Khan slammed the hammer few times and called for order. And she didn't have to try for long. All present knew she means what she says and would not hesitate to throw them out, so all was quiet. Judge Khan was speaking directly looking at Mary.
"Mrs. Taha taking into consideration the written confession submitted by your councillor I hope you have thought long and hard about what all this is going to mean to you. Aiding and abetting to murder is a very serious offence which carries a maximum jail term of 15 years. I hope your legal counsellor have advised you about the the gravity of the offence and you're not doing this under any false illusion. There will be a separate punitive hearing to decide on the terms and conditions of your punishment."
"Mrs. Astha Rose Almeida, you are here by acquitted of all charges against you and is free to go. We apologise for the inconvenience caused. I know it's a little solace, and it's little too late, what you lost cannot be replaced nor I'm trying to belittle your loss. I'm a mother so I know the pain. I wish you all the best. Forget the past and move forward. Don't dwell on what you lost but think of the possibilities the unknown future holds. God bless you my child"
With that she was set free. She was back to being the richest 23 old in Mumbai. Nothing seemed to register in her head yet. She was in a dazed state. It's over. The nightmare is finally over.
The case against Ajith and Brijesh will take place separately. Mary has identified Ajith as the man she gave the money and a picture of Mr. Almeida. She had audio recordings of him and her as well. It all turned out to be a walk in the park for the criminal unit in the end. They had a iron clad case with tangible evidence to put them behind bars for life. They were seeking the maximum, which is a suspended death penalty which transforms into a life term.
Astha stood up once more before the Judge was to end the proceedings. "Your Honour, may I be allowed to ask for clemency for Mrs. Taha. I know she did many wrongs. And ultimately got James killed as well. But I know she's not a bad perosn. She made wrong choices. I hold no grudge against her"
"Mrs. Almeida while I applaud you for you're compassion I can't overlook the fact that a life was lost. She is directly connected to that crime. But you're words will be considered when her punitive hearing takes place." Said Judge Khan looking at Astha.
"You're very lucky to have a sister like her. I'm glad you did the right thing in the end Mrs. Taha"
"The court is adjourned" saying she slammed the hammer one last time.
The court premises was cordoned off by the police prior to the verdict was read out. But there was a beehive of reporters gathered outside. Astha was to go back to Almeida Mansion with Filo and Samuel. Samuel finally spoke to his daughter. They both cried bitterly. Asthas heart broke seeing their plight. Her going home was bitter sweet for her. As she stepped out of the building there was flurry of flashes that went off. She saw SSP Kannar, Det. Gokhle and Shlok standing next to a police jeep. Their jeep was blocked by one of the prison buses.
She walked towards them. Shlok kept looking at her. Hoping she'd spare him a glance, he wanted to say so many things to her. But she walked right past him and stood in front of SSP Kannar. "Sir, I'm sorry for the embarrassment I caused you and the unit. Thank you for opening my eyes. Sir, you were right hope is everything, and I promise you sir until my last breath I shall live with hope. Thank you once again Sir, for your wisdom and your understanding" she said looking up at him.
He put his hand on her head and said "it was always in you. Never forget that. Rise and fight" she wanted to hug him. She felt his companion and love. Not even her own father has ever showed any love remotely close to what he showed her in just matter of few minutes.
Then she turned towards Arjun. He looked nervous. "Det. Gokhle thank you for your understanding and your kind heart" and she extended her hand. Arjun wasn't sure what to do. "Gokhle just shake hands. She's not asking you to take her hand in marriage" Damn this Tyson. Thinking he shook her hand, and she was on her way towards the car. Arjun was Still blushing. SSP Kannar took out his crisp white hanky and offered it to Arjun and said "here wipe your eyes".
"I have my own sir" said Arjun not knowing what is expected of him in a situation like that. "Come on Gokhke lets go and get rid of those po*n tapes" said SSP Kannar with a pat to his shoulder. "I don't have any sir" said Arjun. "It's ok Gokhke tell mommy until you get married you'll need them" Tyson was in a very good mood. "Mama, knows everything. Sir! It's ok I'll come with Shlok" said Arjun hoping for some respite. "Gokhle, get in the jeep, last time I checked, I was 100% sure I'm Hetero. So, your virtue is not under any eminent threat" said SSP getting in the jeep. Arjun had no choice but to follow his orders red as an apple.
Shlok was looking at Astha taking to Tyson then to Arjun but she didn't even look at him. She completely ignored him. He walked after her. As she was about to open the car door he put his hand on the door and prevented her from opening. She kept looking at the door handle.
"Astha, just look at me one last time. I will not bother you after today" said Shlok. But she refused to look at him. Not because she didn't want to. She wanted to look into those dark loving eyes and tell him he's not a bother. He's still the only good thing in her life. But she was afraid her eyes and then her heart will betray her mind. She kept looking down.
"Astha, loving you made me the man I am today. Knowing that you loved me gives me the greatest happiness. I know I didn't do many things right. But you did. For that I'll forever be grateful. You showed me love. Made me feel love. You happened to me and showed me what it feels to be happy and loved. I'm sorry for all the wrongs I did. I hope one day you'll find it in you're heart to forgive me. I wish you all the possible happiness. You deserve it more than anyone else. Stay happy and stay safe always Astha. Knowing you're ok, I'll be too"
She finally mustered up enough courage to look at him. And All she wanted was for him to hold her in his arms. Why can't you see it. Please just hug me one last time.
