Every popular show has last names for its characters, and that didn't stop the audience from loving them equally all over the country (and even abroad). so how does having surnames help?
In india people pretend being secular but the first thing they want to know is religion,caste,nativity,race etc ..why should you want to know surnames!

Because its strange and unusual. That's why. No need to read so much into it now. 😃
