Producer Yash Patnaik has two strong running shows in his merit: Ek Veer Ki Ardaas- Veera on number one GEC on Star Plus and Saddha Haq in number one youth centric network on channel V. Both his shows portray a varied set of stories stringed meticulously by interesting turn of events- where the lead characters rise from a mountain of societal averse backdrops to sophistication. While Veera is village based, Saddha Haq is urban, however, both the shows are running well with abundant realistic touch and youthful progressive set up. Credit of it definitely goes to the vision unearthed by enthusiastic and creative Yash Patnaik. Just Showbiz got Yash on board in an exclusive chat about his stints into today's television.
Excerpts:
Veera has completed full 2 years. How was the experience and what do you feel about its success?
It is satisfying. In fact when we started off, we were aware that we are taking huge risk. It was gamble to do show based on brother and sister, sibling relation. The shows on sibling relationship hadn't tried since very long time. We were convinced about story. It is great story with great characters. We had great writing team lead by Mamata but we were really not sure how audience will respond to it but we knew if they respond and feel in first few episodes then they stick to it. We got tremendous support from the channel. The initial round of promotion play biggest role in taking the show to people. The campaign they did was tremendous, then followed up with great writing and performances. We had tough competition from big shows. When we launched the show there was 3 big shows around us and this show was not considered as main stream show because we didn't had big stars. We managed to shout out and get audience and retained them with our good story telling. We said the story honestly and performances were natural. The set up was very real. Punjab was shown in a very realistic way with lot of detailing. I think that paid off. Now we complete 2 years. We had been top of the slot and slot leader for about 99% of time. That itself is huge motivation for us.
From Veera' team who is your favorite?
Harshita, Bhavesh the kids who play roles Veera and Ranveer are my favorite. They were so adorable. Yesterday I called both of them to the set when we cut cake. I want them to cut cake, because they play huge role in heading Veera. Then the other kids are also my favorite ones. The guy who played Baldev is good. Vishal, Farnaz, Digangana, Shivin, Sneha and everybody is wonderful. Yajuvendra who played Balwanth, he started his career under me. Everybody is close to me. They are like extended family for me and Mamata.
Talking about shows you have been produced, Veera' and Sadda Haq', all of them are youth oriented shows. Any specific reason for choosing youth oriented shows?
Veera is my 15th show and Sadda Haq is my 16th show. Before that we have done lot of desi shows also but Rang Badalti Odhani again a youth show. Some where we feel that youth is the audience of today and they will be main audience tomorrow. As a company we believe that one has to look for the next 5 years trend than looking at last 5 years trend. If we look at last 5 years trend it's already over exposed. Youth is going to be main stream. India has huge youth population. They are the people who we can attract them towards television otherwise tomorrow we will not have any audience for TV because old audience will get retired at some point of time from watching TV. It is always better to have new audience because new audience doesn't come with any pre-conceive notion so we do youth show. The next 2-3 shows are lined up are youth shows again. So I think as production house, we consciously try but at the same time if we should see audience profile of Veera as well as Sadda Haq we have both generation audience. The characters might be youth but it also work for older generation. Old generation people are also watching "Veera" religiously. I keep getting letters from so many people. Thousands of letters we receive every month. A good story is important and characters I think should be younger. They should be aspirational and have a connect with audience. I think as a producer, production house is responsible to bring new audience which most of time is youth.
In Sadda Haq' it's a fight of a lady against her own family. Is Sadda Haq about women liberation from start?
It's about aspiration and dreams. Generally people think aspiration and dreams are only domain of men. This show is about a girl who also can have aspiration and dream. She is not fighting against family. She is fighting against the society and people who are more lenient towards boys. She likes smell of grease more than mehendi. She wants to drive and produce fast car. She wants to become auto mobile engineer. The dream should not be crashed just because she is a girl. That's her journey. When we started with the show, we wanted the show in youth space but didn't want show with dance. We wanted to do show which is deep and characters are more stronger. Again I think if 15 years back, if you should ask a girl what you are going to do when you are 25, she would say I will marry but now things are different. For all the girls now career is not just time pass. That gives you identity, respect and self-confidence. That is what we felt when we thought of character Samyukta. Samyukta would fight for that. In Samyukta we have provided lot of traits. We brought up issue of dowry. Going forward we also see things like fight against moral politics so we will bring lot of issues through Samyukta and Saddha Haq.
What are the future ventures you are working on. Can we have glimpse of it?
It's too early to discuss about them. We believe people should accept the story which contains strong message and content like the way Veera and Saddha Haq. We are not in rush for new shows. We are going slow and yes there are 2-3 big shows coming up with new content. They all are refreshing content like Saddha Haq and Veera. They will have their own identity. They will differ from each other.
Tell us about your journey of becoming a producer
I was like any other kid in childhood. I was from small place and small town called Bhuvaneshwar. I was last bencher in school but from child hood had dream to tell story. I was always fascinated with stories. Malgudi days was one of the crucial point when I was thinking about a story. When I used to read stories, I never read stories to remember. I used to get visuals as kid. As I grew up, I went to high school and then collage but I didn't want to end up like other people with another set up or settle in business. I wanted to tell stories. I think that is what helped me to get into this industry. To enter in this industry was very difficult because none in my family are related to media. So I got into journalism. I started as journalist then I used to do cartooning like I used to cover face layouts, then I got into documentary. I directed quite a lot of documentaries. Later I entered into production house called Kanik Communications, I was there for very brief time and I moved to Fireworks productions. I was with them 7 years. I was heading that company. I joined as executive producer there and then went to glitter side of the company. After that in 2007, I started Beyond Dreams . It's almost 7-8 years journey.
You gave chance to new talent till now in your projects so are you continue this in your future projects also?
Yes. I always believe that when we get first break, we put all passion and energy into that. I think the new comers come with their new aspiration, dreams and passion which in due course of time in most of the cases dies off but not in all cases because there are lot of people who retain the passion. I always believe the main character should be new person whom don't have any baggage of what not to do. So you can have clean slate to start. It's like open canvas. It's a complete white canvas that I can paint the painting what ever I want. So I think new guys come with lot of passion. The cast of Veera and Sadda Haq' don't have experience at all. Particularly in case of Sadda Haq' all of them don't have experience but they come with lot of passion and they surrendered. They didn't ask questions. Before casting the actor, there is almost one year we have spent in creating that character. Character needs to develop the way it created and that is where the success lies I think. Later the actor take forward the character by adding their own inputs. The character should be presented the way the creators are thought of and that part new comers do very nicely.
In all your shows which character is very close to you?
Every character is from heart. I think without feeling no character can come up. In my opinion most sensual character so far is Sanyukta, apart from Veera'. Veera' is supported by lot of content whereas Sanyukta's character in Sadda Haq stood out alone. That is very different character. She is not regular heroine. We have shown Sanyukta smoking in first episode. Nobody ever had showed their heroine smoking in episode 1. People thought we are ruining the character. So I think some where it was very difficult character to create and I think we are managed successfully. Sanyukta is most fascinating character we created so far. Most popular character might be Veera because it's a desi show and lot of credit goes to little Harshita'.
Amitabh Bachchan' first debut in fiction show Yudh' was launched in the same time slot of Veera'. At that moment there was complete threat, but loyal viewers kept you top. What were your feelings at that time?
We were very scared. We all are grown up watching Amitabh Bachchan films. I am huge fan of Amitabh Bachchan. Few films of him, I have seen more than 30 times. He is most iconic person. I remember dialogues of most of his films before 2000. It was upsetting but at same time I think the audience profile of Yudh is very different from Veera. Thriller audience is different. We were not panic but we were scared because a huge show were coming against us. But we didn't do anything in panic. We didn't change any story to fight against Yudh because we knew one thing that audiences are different for both shows. I think every show should work in TV because there is lot of effort behind it. No show should suffer. When we make content for television, we have to keep in mind that what audience want.
If you have to make Veera with Bollwood stars, whom would you like to cast?
I think Ranveer Singh will be Ranvijay, Baldev has to be Arjun Kapoor and for Veera I would go for Parineeti Chopra and for Gunjan Anushka Sharma or Sonam Kapoor.
Do you think writers have played a important role for the success of Veera' ?
My wife is writer. She is the creator of Veera. I don't deny that. In any kind of story-telling, writers play important role because they are the people who create characters. But at the same time, it's not correct to give credit only to writers. The credit goes to the entire team of creativity including creative directors, director of photography, art director and actors and everybody else. It would be very unfair if I say particular department is responsible.
Note to the fans of Veera' and Saddha Haq'.
I am extremely grateful to all the people who are watching Veera and Sada Haq. You people are our inspiration, aspiration and whatever we are doing and achieving is because of your love and affection. Watch episodes, write comments to us and criticize us. I think criticism is biggest achievement because we learn from criticism. I dedicate my work to the people who watch our shows.
