Besides his arrogance and butt of all jokes persona he also speaks in a way that does not invoke any empathy or sympathy. His dialect (for want of a better word) speaks towards his education level and probably explains why it isn't as polished as it should be as is generally thought of for a Londoner. As a viewer it gets frustrating just trying to understand him when he speaks, let alone identifying with him. This frustration translates into part of the reason he is barely tolerated. Add to that his inertia and lack of humbleness and he becomes prime villain material. The other thing is the guys sucks at picking stands. No matter how hard he tries he is just not hero material and that bugs the hell out of him.
