Chapter 5
The War Begins
It has to start somewhere
It has to start sometime
What better place than here
What better time than now
In every battle there comes a time when both sides consider themselves beaten~then he who continues the attack wins~
Ulysses S. Grant
For the first time in his damned 32 years Shlok was deeply and madly angry. What he felt now was neither the calm rage when every time someone displeased him or tried to betray him , nor the type of cold and calculating one when he confronted some enemy.
It was blinding, consuming hatred that poured out from every facet of his body that his whole soul screamed of. He was burning with rage, dying with hatred. He really wanted to crush that tiny slip of a girl under his feet. His fists clenched at the thought. Every mutinous muscle itched to wipe that girl from the earth's face.
And then he saw her horrified face. She was looking shocked. His demeanor slightly relaxed. He watched her calculatingly. It looked she too was shocked with her act too. He moved his gaze around. There were shocked faces, satisfied faces, derisive faces, and some sympathizing faces.
That girl had been very successful in making a public spectacle of him and herself too. He smiled sarcastically. He was really a fool of the worst kind that he had tried to judge her on Ramlal speculations and then had gone behind her to know her for what she was, he mocked himself inwardly...and that was certainly not a good girl next door...
Astha saw his face turn into an emotionless and mask again. She couldn't believe her eyes that someone had been able to raise such a burning rage in her heart and what more she had acted totally out of her character. She had never thrown anything on anyone even in her worst tantrums. And she could swear on her all 20 years of living happily that she had never saw such rage in a human being, that the man infront of her was portraying just a moment ago.
His neck muscles had been corded and pulled taught, trying to control his anger. A muscle ticked at the corner of his mouth and another vein throbbed at his temple. His eyes had been glowing with a red light. But now he was so calm, it was like another person had completely taken his place.
"You know you shouldn't have done that", Shlok said. The coldness in his voice seeped through her bones. And she shivered.
Ignoring the warning signals of her mind she decided to give him a piece of her mind. I am surrounded by public. He can't do anything. He won't be able to harm me. She thought.
"What, why shouldn't I have done that?" She said sharply. "The way you were behaving with me any girl would have done the same if she would have been in my shoes". She said angrily.
"And what way I was behaving with you, pray tell me little lady", Shlok asked in a mocking voice.
His mocking voice acted as a catalyst on Astha's already frayed nerves. "You were misbehaving with me", She shouted, laying the entire blame on him. Tears had started rolling down her cheeks.
"He tried to threw a line on me, when I walked past his table." She sobbed, regarding the people gathered around them. "When I rejected his advances he started giving me vulgar comments and he even tried to grab my hand."Astha hiccupped.
Shlok's face was showing disgust. He had always known to what extent a woman could go in manipulating minds and showing deviousness. It was nothing new for him. But it was quite astonishable in a girl of her age. She was what 20, 21. He tried to guess.
Astha had no option but to cry harder. She had to convince the people around her that she was right. And she had to show them her crocodile tears, rolling down her cheeks so that they would be completely on her side. Voices had started to rise all around him, women were muttering, men were whispering...
"Throw him in jail", a stout woman of about 50 shouted, her jowls quivering, venom in her eyes.
"Men like them should be castrated", a young girl wearing a bright red miniskirt and tight blouse of the same color waved her hand dramatically.
Shlok calmly looked at her. It was obvious she was trying to show her bright red nail polish to the people around them.
He had noticed that all men were silent. They were avoiding their eyes, not looking straight at him and were shuffling their feet. One of them dared to look at Shlok. He was a man of about forty. When Shlok's cold glance hit him. He gave him a sheepish smile.
"That girl is lying. She is devious to the core. I myself have seen her going to that young man's table as I was sitting nearby. It was she who was trying to flirt with him. Not the other way around."A tall, bony woman of about 60 at last spoke up." He was the one who rejected her advances, she is now getting her revenge from that poor boy", she said vehemently.
There was an eerie silence after her comments. Astha paled. She felt as if someone had dragged the rug from under her feet. But on the other hand Shlok felt a streak of sadistic satisfaction go through his heart at her shocked silence.
People had started moving now shaking their heads in disgust but Astha was still rooted to the floor. She really wanted to be swallowed by earth. She was thinking that she had to spoke so many lies to save face because for the first time in her life she had really lost her temper and thrown something at someone. But she also knew that there was no justification for the cheap and vulgar lie that she had uttered against that man.
Angie started to tug at Astha's arm. "Asthu, let's go from here, people are whispering behind our back", she muttered under her breath. Astha started to walk stiffly following the other girls outside. At the exit she turned her face back to watch the reaction of that stranger whose name she still didn't know.
What she saw she knew would haunt her for a lifetime. He was watching her walk away from the scene of crime. There was no need for him to say anything. His cold eyes said all. They were conveying her a certain kind of msg...
Shlok watched her moving towards the exit. Her gait reminded him of an old woman. At the exit she suddenly paused and then turned her face to look at him. He saw a hint of remorse in her eyes which was overshadowed with fear. Yeah, he thought. She has every need to be afraid of me. He gave her a venomous look which was to convey a certain sort of msg...
Astha's eyes widened as she understood what was written in his venomous gaze...
Shlok's lips culred derisively as he knew the moment she understood his silent msg...the msg of ...RETRIBUTION...
