CHAPTER 31. THE CALM BEFORE THE
STORM
It was the darkest hour of the night. Not
even the moon was visible due to clouds. Geet stared at the inky sky with lots
of questions in her eyes. Her right hand fingers fiddled with her engagement
ring as she looked at the sky with trepidation.
An hour back, Geet was sleeping peacefully
when she was woken up with a jerk. Dread had filled every pore of her body and
fear had gnawed at her mind and heart. Her heart hammered in her chest and her
forehead was dotted with sweat. She had run out of her bed with tears streaming
down her cheeks to the Devi Maiyya's mandir that Maan had built for Khushi. She
had thrown herself on the Ma's feet praying for some solace from what she was
feeling. It had taken a while for her heart to calm down and for her to come to
senses and realise that she was crying. When she sat up, she looked at Ma's
idol and prayed for her new family's safety.
And now, an hour after being woke up with
dread and sweat and tears, Geet was standing by the window looking at the sky
unable to go back to sleep. She wasn't sure what she felt. And she did not know
what woek her up. All she remembered was the fear of loosing her newly built
family! Was it some nightmare that she could not remember now or was it some
premonition? She bit her lip as worry continued to toy with her heart and scary
visions of finding mangled bodies of her family took over her mind.
Suddenly, a hand touched Geet's shoulder
and she shrieked loudly making the person spin her around. She started shouting
to leave her alone for few seconds before she realised that it was Maan
standing in front of her. She looked at him from top to bottom as if making
sure that it was him and not some illusion. Once she was sure of his presence
she slammed into him, hugging him, her hand gripping his vest tightly making
sure that he did not move out of her arms without her permission.
Maan frowned at Geet's actions. He had come
down to get water when he saw Geet standing by the window staring outside lost
in her thoughts. He called her by her name twice but she did not respond making
him worry and now she was hugging him so tightly that he could feel her nails
through his vest. What happened that scared his Geet so much? What happened?
"Geet!",
Maan whispered but Geet did not listen.
"Geet!",
he said it again but this time his hands fingered her hair trying to comfort
her.
Geet
shook her head as she mumbled out, "Main theek hoon!"
Maan
frowned, "Toh phir tum itni ghabraayi hui kyun ho? Kya hua Geet? Apne Maan ko
nahi bataaogi?"
His
gentle coaxing words soothed Geet enough to raise her head and look into his
eyes, "Pata nahi Maan! Achanak se meri neend tooti aur mujhmein ek ajeeb sa
darr aake baith gaya!"
Maan
finally noticed the tear tracks under her eyes even though she had stopped
crying by now. He took in her sweat covered forehead, her scared expression and
promptly hugged her back trying to make her feel safe. She explained how she
had come running to the Mandir hoping that Dev Ma would give her some solace.
"Tab se mujhe himmat hi nahi ho rahi Maan ki main sone jaaun! Bahut ajeeb sa
darr lag raha hai Maan!"
Maan
kissed her hair as he mumbled out, "Shaayad tumne koi bura sapna dekha hoga!"
Geet
shrugged, "Agar dekha hai toh mujhe kuch yaad nahi! Yaad hai toh bas yeh darr!
Maan! Aap mere saath ho na? Aap mujhe, Khushi ya Rajji ko kuch hone nahi doge
na? Jaise aapne Hoshiarpur se yahaan aate waqt un gundon se humein bachaaya tha
waise hi abhi bhi humein bachaaoge na?"
Maan
smiled as he pulled away from Geet. He cupped her face and after placing a kiss
on the tip of her nose he spoke teasingly, "Agar tum pichli baar ki tarah mere
saath khadi rehkar Ma Kaali jaise ladne lagogi toh I am sure hum dono ki behnon
ko kuch nahi hoga!"
Maan's
teasing had its desired effect as Geet chuckled. "Ma Kaali?", she pouted making
Maan nod, "Yup! Tumne mujhe bhi dara diya tha aur main toh tumhaare side tha!"
Geet
hit his arm lightly in anger and soon both were laughing their hearts out. Finally
Maan convinced Geet to go to bed. As she entered her room, he bid her good bye
and soon he was in his room, in his bed already half asleep. It was few minutes
after he slipped into his bed that he felt someone enter the room. He frowned
in confusion when the person sat by him and then slipped into the bed by him.
He turned around and was not surprised to see Geet lying by his side looking at
him with fear in her eyes. After what she experienced, Maan was not surprised
that she needed comfort. Slowly, putting
an arm around her, he pulled her close, and placing his head in the crook of
her neck, he drifted off to sleep. Geet finally felt the calm and security
settle around her and she slowly drifted off to sleep.
Next
morning brought Geet out of her dreamland with smile on her face and happiness
in her heart. She looked up to see Maan watching her while gently carding his
fingers through her hair. They had changed positions at night it seemed as now
Maan was on his back and Geet was turned towards him with her head on his
chest. He gave her a tender smile and Geet smiled back sleepily.
"I
could get used to this!", Maan murmured.
Geet
frowned, "Hmmm?"
Maan
chuckled at how adorable Geet looked with her hair all messed up and her sleepy
eyes looking at him blearily.
Pushing
one of the strands on her face behind her ears, he spoke up, "Maine kahaa I
could get used to this! Tum is tarah... meri baahon mein! Aur meri har subah
tumse shuru aur har raat tumse khatam! I think I could get used to this life!"
"Then
get used to this!", Geet piped up as she placed her head back on his chest and
tried to get back to her sleep, "Kyunki ek mahine ke baad se hum dono ko har
din aise hi rehna hai!"
Maan
continued to run his fingers through Geet's hair as he contemplated her statement.
After few minutes, he spoke up, "Ek mahine baad kyun? Aaj raat se hi kyun
nahi?"
Geet
did not even look at him while responding. She just murmured her reply as she
tried to get her sleep back. "Kyunki iss ghar mein do aur ladkiyaan rehti hai
aur humein unke saamne galat example nahi set karna hai!", Geet spoke up
sleepily. Maan tried to get back to sleep as his eyes slowly drifted off.
Suddenly,
Geet sat up with alarm making Maan jerk awake.
"Kya
hua Geet?", Maan mumbled wanting to get back to his sleep with Geet in his
arms.
"Maan!",
Geet shrieked in horror making Maan look at her in worry.
Her
alarmed expression made Maan sit up too.
"Khushi!
Rajji!", Geet shouted. Maan blinked in surprise, "Geet!"
"Maan!
Agar Rajji uthi aur usne dekha ki main uske baaju mein nahi hoon toh use pata
chal jaayega ki main yahaan hoon! Aur phir woh Khushi ko bhi bata degi!", Geet
babbled in worry.
Maan
grasped her face with both hands trying to calm her down, "Geet! Kuch nahi
hoga! Humaari toh bahut jald shaadi hone waali hai aur yeh un dono ko pata hai!
I am sure woh logon ko koi farak nahi padega!"
Geet
pulled his hands away and stood up from the bed, "Maan! Aap samajh rahe nahi
ho! Aapko toh kuch nahi kahengi lekin mujhe dono ched chedke jaan nikaale denge!
Na baba! Main chali!" Geet scrambled off.
Maan
sighed; on the contrary to what Geet thought, he did know how vicious his
sister can be when it comes to teasing someone and he was so not interested in
facing her wrath. So he let Geet go and went back to bed trying to catch up to
his sleep before he had to get up for exercise and breakfast.
It was 8 in the morning and Geet and Maan
were found eating breakfast with Rajji and Khushi.
Suddenly,
Rajji piped out something which shocked the couple to the core, "Didi! Aap raat
ko kahaa thi?"
Maan
choked on his juice while Geet dropped her spoon.
"Kya?
Kya mmmatlab hai tera?", Geet mumbled as she picked her spoon and patted Maan's
back.
"Woh
jab main uthi thi paani peene ke liye toh aap kamre mein nahi thi!", Rajji
explained.
Geet
heaved a sigh of relief, "Oh woh...! Woh main walk pe gayi thi!"
Rajji
frowned, "Raat ke teen baje?"
Maan
who was eating sandwich, choked on it. This time Khushi patted his back as Geet
gave him water.
"Veerji!
Kya kar rahe ho aap? Theek toh ho na?", Khushi asked worriedly and Maan nodded.
Geet
answered Rajji in annoyance, "Haan! Main raat ko teen baje walk kar rahi thi!
Tujhe kya? Agar insaan ko neend nahi aati, aur neend laane ke liye woh walk
kare, toh usmein tujhe kya problem hai?"
Rajji
pouted and turned towards her breakfast all the while mumbling, "Maine itna sa
toh sawaal poocha tha! Usmein itna ghussa kyun ho rahi ho?"
After
few minutes, Khushi slyly looked at the couple as she remembered something from
the morning, "Waise Bhabhi! Aaj subah aap Veerji ke kamre mein kya kar rahi
thi?"
Fortunately,
Maan was not eating or drinking anything, but his face still took on a choked
look while Geet's eyes widened. Rajji looked up from her breakfast as even she
wanted to know the answer behind the question. Geet laughed uneasily, "Kya... Kkya
matlab?"
Khushi
shrugged as she focused on her breakfast not noticing the couples' expression,
"Woh aaj subah humne aapko Veerji ke kamre se aate hue dekha tha!"
Geet
let out her breath, "Woh... Woh toh Maan ko ek file urgently chaahiye thi toh
main unhein woh dene gayi thi!"
Khushi
was confused, "Subah ke 6 baje?" Geet bit her lip while Maan rolled his eyes.
"Bas
karo yeh sab sawaal! Saali nanad ho ya enquiry commission ki members! Humpe
concentrate karne ke jagah apne aap pe concentrate karo! Rajji! Tumhaari exams
aa rahi haina? Padhaai pe focus karo!", Maan scolded the girls, "Gudiya! Ek
mahine mein shaadi hai! Make a list of things you need to do! Aur hum dono kya
kar rahe hain uski jasoosi chodke apne baare mein socho!"
Both
the girls pouted but nodded at Maan's words and ate their rest of breakfast
quietly. As both ladies went to get ready for their office and college, Rajji
whispered to Khushi quietly, "Kuch toh gadbad hai!"
Apparently,
she wasn't as quiet as she thought, as Maan sent a glare their way which sent
them packing.
"Finally!",
Maan growled making Geet laugh out loud at the grumpy look on Maan's face.
Place
- AR Fashion House
A loud round of applause filled the room
just as Arnav and Khushi entered the office. They looked around in surprise as
everyone clapped for them. A banner was hanging nearby citing Congratulations. Khushi
grinned happily and looked at Arnav who grabbed her hand and smiled back at
her. Both looked around as employed surged forward to congratulate them
personally. Some shook hands with them while some ladies hugged Khushi happily.
Lavanya even went on to say that she always knew the two were made for each
other. Khushi and Arnav looked at each other amusingly as both remembered the
days when Lavanya would follow Khushi and try to copy her because she wanted
ASR to be crazy for her too.
Soon the staff dispersed off and the engaged
couple moved to their places while looking at each other longingly. Arnav
headed towards his cabin overlooking the main floor while Khushi headed towards
her cubicle. As she reached her desk, she smiled in surprise at the bouquet in
front of her. It was filled with variety of roses and a small card peaked
through it. She frowned as she picked out the card and opened it only for her
eyes to widen as it read, "Hello Miss Khurana! Will you go out on a date with
your fianc tonight?" She looked up to see Arnav looking at her with smirk. She
smiled mischievously as she hid the table from his eyes. Arnav frowned as
instead of replying Khushi moved blocking her desk from his sight. After few
minutes of doing something, Khushi moved away and Arnav's eyes lit up in
delight as he saw her desk. She had removed the roses from the bouquet and
arranged it to form YES' on the table. She looked at him with a shy smile while
he smiled broadly. Soon both were bombarded with their work and both took off
in different directions but neither forgot their date with each other.
"Kahaan le jaa rahe aap mujhe?", Khushi
pouted as she tried to get sense of the place they were driving towards.
"Patience
Miss. Khurana! Patience!", Arnav mocked from the driving seat.
Khushi
huffed in annoyance knowing very well that he was enjoying her impatience. But
what was she supposed to do? She had gotten all dressed up for their first date
and when Arnav arrived, instead of complimenting her, he had asked her to wear
a blindfold and come with him! Hey Devi Maiyya! Where was he taking her? She
remembered how her brother had blindfolded Geet's eyes and taken her on air
balloon. Hey Devi Maiyya! Please make sure that he does not take me there. Air
balloon mein khade rehne tak theek hai! Par hawaa mein khaana khaana? Humse
nahi hoga!
Soon the car came to stop and Arnav got out
of his car and went to Khushi's side. He opened the door and grasping her hand
he said with flair, "Your date night awaits, Princess!" Khushi made a face as
she stepped out of car. What was the use of having a date night if she can't
even see the venue? Arnav, understanding why she was making faces, let out a
laugh making her even more annoyed. Soon, Arnav was holding Khushi's hand and
taking her somewhere. After few minutes of walking, he suddenly abandoned her
making her worry but not before ordering her not to remove the blindfold till
he asked her to. She stood there in nervousness all the while fiddling with the
duppatta of her dress. For this occasion specifically, Geet had bought her
lavender colored Sharara which Khushi had adorned happily. Khushi bit her lip
in worry. Kahaan reh gaye Arnavji? And then from somewhere, she heard Arnav ask
her to open the blindfold.
Khushi opened the blindfold eagerly only to
look all around her in shock. It was a park. Arnav had brought her to a park
for their first date. But that was not what shocked Khushi. It was the
decorations surrounding her that mesmerized her. Various colored fairy lights
twinkled from every place she looked at as they seemed to woven around the
trees and bushes in the park. Lanterns placed strategically lit the grounds and
its pathways. Her eyes fell on the ground where a road made from rose petals
lay in front of her. As a delighted and stupefied Khushi walked down the rose
petal filled path she looked up and straight to see a gazebo placed right in
the middle of the park. The gazebo was surrounded with white curtains which
moved to the rhythm of the wind. In the middle of the gazebo was a table for
two with candles lit, right by which Arnav was standing, smiling at her. She
walked towards him with a wide grin on her face. As she neared him, he pulled
back a chair and beckoned her to sit. Khushi sat down and smiled as she noticed
some bowls covered in front of her. So food is here too! Yummy! Khushi
excitedly wondered what Arnav had gotten for her.
Before Arnav could say anything, Khushi
lunged forward and pulled the dishes open only to frown in surprise. Served in
elegant bowls were... "Yeh kya Arnavji? Chinese Takeout?", Khushi looked at him
incredulously.
Arnav shrugged as he pouted, "Kya karun? No
chef was ready to come to this sunsaan place and cook for us!"
Khushi
took one look at Arnav's child like pout and burst out laughing.
"What!",
Arnav muttered looking at her indignantly and Khushi tried to compose herself
but her eyes fell on the Chinese takeout which Arnav had painstakingly got out
of the packets and served in dishes and she again started laughing.
"Arnavji!
Aap bhi na!", Khushi muttered as she tried to get her laughter in control.
Arnav
shrugged again, "It was this or getting food from five star which would have
cooled down by the time we reached here!"
"Smart!",
Khushi muttered but continued to giggle, "Ab humein samajh aaya ki aap itna
jaldi mein kyun the? Aapko takeout ki thande hone ki tension thi right?"
Arnav
nodded as they started to serve themselves and started eating.
Khushi
gulped the noodles as she continued to speak, "Wahi hum soche, ki Arnavji ne
humaari taareef kyun nahi ki? Bechaare
take out ke tension mein the!"
Arnav
looked up from his dish in confusion, "Taareef?"
"Haan!",
Khushi nodded eagerly, "Humaari taareef?"
Arnav
frowned in confusion, "Tumhaari taareef kyun karun? Aaj kuch special hai kya?"
Khushi's
jaw dropped open and she stood up in shock, "ARNAVJI!", she shrieked in anger
as Arnav looked at her with pure innocence on his face, "Aap... Aap... Aap hadd
karte ho! Hum itni mehnat se tayyaar hokar aaye hain aur aapko hum mein kuch
alag nazar nahi aata! Bas hogaya! Hum jaa rahe hain yahaan se!"
Khushi
huffed and turned around to storm away when Arnav spoke up, "Taareef? Kya karun
taareef? Yeh kahun ki tumhaari zulfein kaale baadal ki yaad dilaate hain? Ya
yeh kahun ki tumhaara yeh badan sangemarmar se taraasha hua lagta hai?" Khushi
turned and looked at Arnav just as Arnav stood up and came around.
"Ya
yeh kahun ki tumhaare aankhen mujhse kehti hai ki aao aur mujh mein doob jaao
ya yeh kahun ki tumhaara chehra chand se bhi jyaada khoobsurat hai?", Arnav
cupped her face and Khushi blushed shyly.
"Lekin
yeh sab toh aaj ki baat nahi hai Khushi! Roz hi mujhe yeh sab lagta hai! Jaanti
ho kyun?", Arnav asked and Khushi shook her head.
"Kyunki
tumhaari saadgi hi tumhein khoobsurat banaati hai!", Arnav whispered and Khushi
stepped back shyly from him and bowed her head down unable to look at him
anymore.
"Aur
isliye tum sabse jyaada khoobsurat ab nahi, tab lagti ho jab subah subah mujhse
aake kehte ho ki jaldi gaadi chalaayiye Arnavji, hum late ho jaayenge jabki
late toh tum karwaati ho!", Khushi looked at him indignantly making him
chuckle.
Arnav
continued to speak, "Khoobsurat jyaada tab lagti ho jab koi tumhaari taareef
kare aur sharam se tum poori laal ho jaati ho!" Khushi smiled at that.
"Aur!",
Arnav muttered loudly as he grabbed Khushi's hand and pulled her close to him.
He looped his hands around her waist, "Aur tum khoobsurat tab lagti ho, jab
poore office ke saamne jealousy mein mujhe kiss karti ho!" Khushi looked at him
with wide eyes as Arnav bowed down and whispered in her ear, "Actually tab toh tum
jyaada hi kuch khoobsurat lagti ho!" Khushi turned red in embarrassment and hid
her face in his chest making him tighten his hold on her.
Half
hour later, our lovebirds were found sitting in their chairs finishing their
dinners.
"Haaye!
Aaj ka date toh badhiya tha!", Khushi piped in, "Bas abhi dance baaki hai!"
"Dance?",
Arnav looked at her in confusion.
Khushi
frowned, "Haan! Dance! Arre! Woh date hi kya jo dance na end ho?"
Arnav
rolled his eyes, "Khushi! We are not in a movie. Ki tum jab chaaho peeche se
koi hindi gaana bajega aur hum dono uspe dance karne lagenge!"
Khushi
pouted at that, "Par thoda sa dance!"
"Without
music?", Arnav asked and Khushi huffed, "Theek hai! Chaliye ghar!"
Khushi
stood up and turned around to walk away. She took few steps ahead when music
started playing from somewhere. She turned to see Arnav playing a song from his
mobile, "Your wish, my command!", he smirked. Khushi smiled and slowly her
smile widened into grin and she walked towards him. He got up from his seat and
held out his hand. She took it and he pulled her close. Slowly they started to
sway to the song.
Teri
Baahon Mein Mili
Aisi
Raahat Si Mujhe
Ho

Teri
Aadat Si Mujhe
Dekhun
Main Jab Tujhko Toh

Deewana
Kar Raha Hai
Tera
Roop Sunehra
Musalsal
Khal Raha Hai
Mujhko
Ab Yeh Sehra
Bata
Ab Jaayein Toh Jaayein Kahaan
As
the music started Arnav started spinning Khushi around, making her laugh out
loud. He smiled, still in awe that she was his. He still wondered when he would
wake up and all of this would turn out to be a dream. Khushi's laughter brought
him out of his thoughts and he realised that if this was a dream, he wanted to
never wake up.
Dard
Ka Aalam Hai Har Dum
Bin
Tere O Mere Humdum
Aankhon
Mein Dikhti Hai Maayusiyaan
"Kya
hua Arnavji?", Khushi stopped laughing and put her hands around his neck.
Jahaan

Badi
Mushkil Se Guzre Din
Chubti
Hai Dil Ko Teri Khamoshiyaan
He
placed a kiss on her forehead, "Nothing! Just remembering those days when you
did not love me!"
Raaz
Gehra Jo Hai Tera
Darr

Khushi
pouted, "Un dino ko bhool jaayiye Arnavji! Ab hum aapke paas hain aur aapke

Deewana

"Promise?",
Arnav asked.
Deewana

Tera
Roop Sunehra
Musalsal
Khal Raha Hai
Mujhko
Ab Yeh Sehra
Bata
Ab Jaayein Toh Jaayein Kahaan
Khushi
nodded, "Promise! But only if you catch me!", she squealed and ran off making
Arnav run after her. They ran around the gazebo and then around the various
pathways surrounding the gazebo. She stuck her tongue out making him growl as
they chased each other. After few minutes, Arnav caught up with Khushi and
grabbing her from her waist, he spun her around making her squeal in surprise
and excitement. Arnav stopped spinning Khushi, laughing loudly and Khushi
joined him in the laughter.
Dhul
Gaye Dil Ke Saare Gham
Khushi
Se Aankhen Hai Yeh Nam
Zundagi
Mein Tu Meri Jab Se Aa Gaya
Arnav
wiped the tears of laughter from his eyes as Khushi grinned at him brightly.
Dil
Ka Armaan Bana Hai Tu
Meri
Pehchaan Bana Hai Tu
Saanson
Mein Rooh Banke Tu Samaa Gaya
He
grasped her waist and pulled her close as she closed her eyes and placed her
head on his chest.
Jaan
Bhi Teri, Dil Bhi Tera
Tujhse
Hai Mera Savera...
Arnav
hugged her and placed a kiss on her head as they swayed to the song.
Deewana
