Novel - Hearts knit together
The beguiling radiance of the dusky sky did little help in soothing the tautness of the air encompassing the mystic aura of the couple as they walked side by side. As much as they tried to pretend calmness, their hearts knew every secret story.
Arnav's frustration level was mounting every second. He, who dominated everyone was getting high and dry dealing with matters involving one simple confession and its several complicated repercussions.
The girl who has established her supremacy over his heart, mind and soul was right beside him yet he was inept of doing anything besides staring. Why the hell is this getting so difficult damn it! His heart raced when his longing gaze swept over her delectable form, her silky soft skin and lustrous long hairs, her cute little nose and juicy red lips and he felt his control slipping away. For a wild moment, he was tempted to throw every damn caution to the wind and lock her in his arms such as to never let go.
He had envisioned this moment so many times and with so many possibilities but never once had he thought of his sweet little temptress to be behaving like a feisty animal flashing her red bulgy eyes whenever he as much as stepped in her direction. This reality was a bitter dose and he couldn't curse Sheetal any less for it was her meherbaani that he was so badly struck. The innumerable, seemingly-brilliant ideas that his mind had produced not so long before now seemed utterly hopeless all thanks to that crazy despo girl. She couldn't have had a perfect timing, his mind credited with pure disgust.
He racked his brains to come up with atleast one good idea for approaching khushi who was avoiding him as though he was an HIV germ and coming under his radar will spate her with that deadly disease. Whatever little camaraderie that they have managed to establish so far, was all lost now. They were back to square one and he dint knew where to begin from, once again!
So the resulting silent journey was nowhere close to either of their expectations but they couldn't help it. Just then, Khushi noticed a man of considerable age sitting by the road-side under the shade of a giant banyan tree. His weather-beaten face, shabby clothes, and rugged appearance gave khushi a clear idea of who he could be. Must be a beggar! She looked at arnav who seemed to have not taken any notice of him and was niftily walking ahead.
The aged man, on the other hand, noticed both of them, his eyes glinting with what could be termed as hope. Wasting no time, he sprang upon his feet and swiftly came by her side, startling poor khushi out of her wits. "Bitiya, is garib ko do paise de de. Kai dino se maine kuch khaya nahi. Rab tera bhala karega" (Daughter, please give some money to this poor man. Its been days since I had eaten anything. Lord will bless you)
Khushi got petrified with the way he was hovering around her. It was not his words but his apparently anticipative eyes that seemed to possess a maniac glint in them, which scared her. Avoiding his gaze, she sped up and got closer to arnav trying to show the old man that she was not alone.
The beggar realizing her intention very well understood the man and the woman were together. Now he was sure of being rewarded. Newly weds and young couples were an easy target. They had an air of sanguinity around them and blessings was what they looked-for. With his hopes elevated, he matched his pace with them and coaxed Khushi to give in to his wish. "Dekh rab ne kinna sona munda tere naseeb kiya hai. Bohot kismet waali hai tu beta. Uski khaatir hi mujhe kuch dede" (See, lord has graced you with such a nice man. You are a very lucky woman. Atleast for him, give me something). Khushi was so scared, instead of correcting him she clutched Arnav's arms who till then was acting heedless of the entire situation. Feeling khushi's touch, he met her petrified eyes and blinked his own in assurance. Passing a cursory glance to the stranger, he at once gathered khushi in his arms, drew her to the other side and then continued walking nonchantly.
The old man got nervous with the gesture but dint reacted. Maybe he dint like me talking to his wife, was what he gathered looking at Arnav's steely strong gaze and indifferent attitude. Khushi, who was observing him felt safe and cocooned in his embrace but she too was confused.
With tiny bit of his faith intact, the beggar made one last try. "Beta, mai bohot garib hu. Mere paas khane-peene ke liye bhi kuch nahi hai. Rab ne kitni pyaari biwi di hai tujhe, uske sadke tu hi meri madad karde. Dekhna woh tere dil ki har muraad puri karega. " (Son, I am very poor. I don't have anything to eat or drink. Lord has given such a beautiful wife to you. For her sake, atleast you help me. Lord will fuffill all of your wishes)
As soon as the man has finished, Arnav dished out a 1000 rupee note from his front pocket and handed it over to him. The beggar looked at what he got and was astonished to say the least. He had almost given up especially since the lady was so repulsed with him. For a good amount of time, he flipped the note back and forth, trying to believe that 'it' was indeed an end to his misery. Understanding dawned on him a while later and his face broke into a huge smile. Giving bountiful wishes to both of them, he almost ran in the other direction, too desperate for food. Rab tumhaari Jodi salaamat rakhe, (May Lord keep your pair intact) were his last parting words.
Arnav smiled looking at his retreating figure, shook his head and resumed walking. Khushi, however, stood rooted on her spot trying to believe what she saw. Kya Arnavji ne sach me aise hi us aadmi ko hazaar rupae de diye? (Did Arnavji really gace thousand rupees to that man?)
Arnav had gone a few steps ahead when he realized that Khushi was not walking beside him. Turning back, his confused gaze landed on her statuetted form.
"Khushi, kya hua? Aise robot ki tarah kyu khadi ho waha? (Khushi, what happened? Why are you standing like a robot there?)"
"huh!" Khushi blinked at him.
"Maine pucha kar kya rahi ho waha, Ghar nahi jaana? (I asked what are you doing there, wont you want to go home?)"
"Ghar? Ha..an.. jana hai naa par..(Home? yes, I have to go but..)" She turned back to look at a now-nowhere-to-be-seen beggar.
"par?"Arnav raised his eyebrows.
"k..kuch nahi, chaliye"
"Unbelievable!"
After quietly walking for sometime, khushi's curiousity butted in once again. Not to forget by this time her mind had produced a self-satisfactory reason. I am just checking, she consoled herself and asked, "A..arnavji"
Arnav: Yes, Khushi.
Khushi: Shayad aapko pata nahi chala but galti se aapne us aadmi ko hazaar rupae de diye hai. (May you haven't noticed but by mistake you have given that old man 1000 rupees)
Arnav's reaction was enough coronary to last her a lifetime for he instantly turned around with shock clearly embedded on his otherwise impassive face, "What the heck, Khushi tumne mujhe roka kyu nahi? (Why dint you stopped me Khushi?) Cant believe I gave him so much of money. Dammit, ab kya hoga?" He racked his hands through his hairs in mock frustration, earning for himself consolatory glances from Khushi.
An innocent Khushi thought he was actually worried and immedietly started empathizing. "hame laga hi tha ke aapne galti se diye honge itne saare paise. Wo aadmi bhi pata hai, aankhe phaad phaad kar ghur raha tha. Hamne rokna chaha, par who itne jaldi rafu-chakkar ho gaya, hame pata hi nahi chala. Uffo Arnavji, how can you be so careless? aapke itne saare paise chale gaye aur ab ham.. (I thought you had mistakenly given that much of money to him and rightly so. even that man was staring at the note with his eyes almost bulged to the size of saucers. Uffo arnavji, how can you be so careless? You wasted so much money and I now I don't know..)"
Khushi would have went on and on with her chirade if not for the mesmerizing sound of arnav's carefree laughter that seemed to be reverberating straight in her heart. He was laughing uncontrollably, looking so relaxed, light and cheerful. Much younger than his age shorn of any agony and pain. His lips were stretched into a wonderful smile that held the power to lit up the entire universe. That moment, Khushi knew she could give anything to see that smile again.
Laughing to his heart's content, Arnav finally took a note at her awestruck face and tenderly cupped her face in his hands, tucking a stray lock behind, "Relax Khushi, mujhe pata hai maine use kitne paise diye, and I think.. (he stopped for effect), he deserve it!"
"kya?" Her mind busy processing his delightful laugh couldn't grasp his words.
"Usne meri biwi ki taarif ki to I guess wo itne toh definitely deserve karta hai (he praised my wife so I guess, he deserve atleast this much)" He gently placed a soft loving kiss on either of her rosy cheeks.
For Khushi, the 'kiss' triggered a memory of sheetal, with her arms wound around a haughty looking Arnav and later kissing him, not once or twice but bloody three times. This effectually landed her back to earth and she couldn't stop herself from saying, "Magar usne sheetal ki taarif nahi ki hai!! (but he never praised sheetal)" She almost whined, her jealous heart failing badly in keeping her displeasure at bay.
"You don't need to worry about that Khushi kumari gupta"..soon to be Singh-Raizada, his heart added in reslolution. "Use jis ki taarif karni thi, usne wahi ki hai (he had praised the right person)" his soft voice rang out like a hoarse whisper in the chilly night air.
Nobody spoke after that. Khushi, who was struggling to keep her temper in check, was stumped. She attempted to deny the as-clear-as-crystal implications of his words but deep down, the constriction around her heart had certainly eased. She felt light and carefree. Almost like floating in the air until the heavy baggage of the inappropriateness of this reality hit her. A reality that was capable of bringing her soaring high dreams to mud-like shame.
Arnav, on the other hand, was just walking. He knew he should be explaining but what to do, it felt to good to see her so riled up. He was almost tempted to tease her some more when she referred to sheetal but the fear of his life budged in right then, preventing him from giving her anything but an honest heartfelt reply.
But now why was she so silent? As much as he knew her, she should have exploded by now. He glanced back and what he saw was enough to stop his heartbeats. He felt his world was crumbling, cold fear seized his very soul even as he gave out a loud shout,
"Khushiii...!!!"
Because a distraught Khushi, with her eyes resembling an ocean full of melancholy was standing in the middle of the road, oblivious to a speeding truck approaching her from behind.
Arnav ran as fast as his legs could take him and was barely there on time to push her out of the way before it was too late. Both of them stumbled with the heavy impact and rolled down together onto the side lane. Landing with her head cushioned on Arnav's chest and his hands enveloping her in a vice like grip, Khushi finally realized what was happening around her.
The incessant honks of the oncoming truck, the almost collision, Arnav pushing her away, their stumbling onto this side lane, her mind registered it all and she trembled violently in his arms with the possibilities of what could have been, if he was even a second late to reach her. Her shivering hands gripped him hard and she tried to raise her head but her efforts were met with a strong resistance as Arnav was adamant to let her go as yet and kept her firmly pressed to him.
Khushi closed her eyes and stayed like that for a while, silently relishing his warmth. Her trance, however, broke feeling moistness on her neck. Alert, she raised herself up on the elbows and watched with dawning horror, Arnav's misted eyes.
"Ar..arnavji?" Her eyes held a question.
"I cant live without you, Khushi..!" was his answer
