Prem had arrived at his cabin of his office frustrated by thinking about Preeti's demand. He couldn't get his head around the idea or the fact that how she could even come across such thought.
His thoughts were interrupted by a buzzing tone, as the secretary informed him that he had to attend a meeting with fellow co-workers. He sighed heavily, as he wasn't in the mood to handling business at the moment. Nevertheless he stood up from his leather chair and walked out from the room with a few files in his hands.
The day went by when Vivek approached his brother's cabin. He stood outside the door where he knocked and led himself inside.
He faced Prem's back as his eyes were cast across the view of the city through the large office windows.
"Prem it's already past 6, are you still busy working?" he asked his brother.
He didn't turn around to answer him. "Just a few more files, then I'll be done with the paper work."
He nodded. "Vinod and I were heading home, thought you could drive with us?"
"I'll be home in a few hours."
His brother could easily tell that Prem was deeply affected by the today's conversation. Who wouldn't be, if you loved the person?
He was about to take a step toward him, but he saw Prem turning his attention down on the file in front of him. He sighed and hated the fact that there was nothing he could do at the moment.
"Don't stay here for too long."
Prem nodded as he heard his older brother leave. Prem closed his eyes and placed the file on the desk. He reached out to place a hand on the window as he saw his own reflection come across.
He clenched his jaw by the upsetting feeling deep inside of him.
A few hours spent alone on the empty building, he sat down in his leather chair. He needed to clear his mind.
He needed everything to be back to normal. Most importantly he needed Preeti who he loved with all his heart. He may never have expressed it clearer but she was everything to him.
He ran a hand though his hair thinking about her, the family, Priya and her mother. Last but not least, he began to think about himself. What should he do? What was the right decision to make?
One thing he was damn sure of, that he wouldn't be able to let go of Preeti no matter what life had put them through. He allowed himself to let his mind wander back where they had shared some beautiful moments together.
"A girl talks through her eyes, and since yesterday, ecstasy brims all over from Preeti's eyes."
"You better get used to this, Prem, she's going to be with you for the rest of your life."
"A girl gives up everything for you. She behaves the way you'd want her to. In return she's only asking for a little love. I know you do love her a lot, but you have to express the love in your heart. Bring the words in your heart to your lips, and you'll see how she evolves."
"What can I say, mom? As Preeti wishes."
"Whether we're tied in a bond or not, we're tied in an emotional bond of hearts, isn't it right?"
Ever so slowly, the memories started to fade away leaving him with yet again an empty feeling.
He shook his head and decided to head home. Maybe they'll get a chance to talk to each other in peace. He reached out for his phone and car keys as he headed down to the parking lot and drove home.
He arrived home after 20 minutes. He turned on the light and removed his blazer jacket he wore in the hallway.
But something was different once reaching to his bedroom.
That night he went home only to find that Preeti wasn't anywhere to see. She was gone.
His mother placed a hand on his shoulder. "She needed time to think." He turned around not believing that it had come this far. Her mother could already see what was going through his son's head.
"And you all let her go, Ma?"
"We did everything to stop her, but she needed some time. Maybe we should respect that for now. Try to talk to her in a few days. Don't worry, Prem, we will all go and sort this matter."
Before he could speak, she interrupted him. "I know it's hard for you, Prem. It's hard for us to see you both go through this. Preeti is like a daughter to me. I guarantee that nothing will go wrong."
The son couldn't help but nod while his mother tried to comfort him.
Weeks went by and none of them had approached each other. He would however often pass her house whenever he had to go for work. Perhaps it was his pride that stood before him, or the fact that they had hurt each other.
He felt a sudden pang of dj vu all over again.
Getting stuck in the middle of the problem and something held them back from reuniting to each other. Prem cursed slightly by the frustration he was feeling in the last few weeks.
He couldn't even concentrate on his work as his thoughts always went to Preeti. Thinking he should visit her, trying to talk to her out from what she wanted in the first place.
Prem shook his head lightly and tried to put his attention back on the black file which was lying on the table in front of him. He needed to dismiss the feelings. He had to try - for now.
------
Meanwhile Preeti stood silently with crossed arms by the huge garden doors, inviting the soft warm air inside the house. Pritam, her father, was studying his daughter with a serious expression.
He had just gotten off the phone with Ram Kishan.
He was worried about her daughter and her future.
He wore a serious expression as he sighed loudly. He decided to break the heavy silence with was forming between them.
"Preeti, this isn't the right solution of the problem. You both are married and by taking such a step will only lead to misery and pain."
She turned around to face her father. Her expression wore no emotions yet her eyes were full of regret and pain. It amazed her how he could still read her even at a time like this.
"This was the only solution I could think of, dad. Besides, it's for the best."
"It is not. You are not thinking about yourself here."
Before she could reply her father interrupted her.
"We all know that you both love each other dearly. If life has put you two in a situation like this, then it don't necessarily mean that it will remain forever. This will change. But prem's love for you will remain the same no matter what. I've seen it in his eyes."
He paused where he watched her raise her gaze toward him. "He longs for you, Preeti. Don't let him wait. Don't break his heart or yours in the process."
His expression softened a bit when he looked at her. "I love you too much to watch you get hurt."
"Dad..."
"I will not watch you go through this!"
That night she tried hard to get some sleep. However, it was not in her favor. She furrowed her brows as she tossed and turned in her bed.
"How could you do this?" a voice said. Preeti stood in front of a woman who wore a disappointed and shocked expression on her face.
"I cannot believe what you did this to us - to my son. We gave you everything, Preeti. Love and support and brought you into this family, so you could give us pain?"
Preeti couldn't form any sentence by the words which were thrown at her way. She turned her attention to another figure standing a few feet away from her. "Prem.."
"Don't you dare say my name," He said. "I don't want anything to do with you! Leave"
She was about to take a step, yet he turned his back toward her. "I said leave!"
The brunet woke up with a start breathing rapidly. She quickly took a look around her surroundings, feeling like she was getting suffocated by the overwhelming feeling.
Once gaining her conscious level, she noticed that whatever she had experienced was all a dream.
She brought her head into her hands as she tried her best to calm down. Somehow she couldn't get rid of the sorrowful feeling. It looked all so real. Would Prem really say those words?' she couldn't help but think.
She laid back into the soft bed and took a deep breath as she closed her eyes. Would he really say all this to her?'
------
Even back home the whole family were worried about them as well. The youngsters of the family were currently sitting around the living room, trying to find a way to sort the matter.
Vinod sighed as he closed his eyes. "I wish there was something we could do for them."
"I think we all feel the same way when it comes to helping them." Vinod expressed.
"But what can we do? I mean they both think they're right from their own perspectives."
"Prem wouldn't let go of Preeti - especially what they've both been through in the past," Sadhna said as she remembered how Prem had sacrificed his love in order to reunite the family back together.
Prem stood in front of his mother facing her while carrying a determinate expression on his face yet his eyes showed nothing but brokenness. He turned around as he gathered his belongings from the room her mother had shifted him to.
He moved to the table and opened the top drawer where his eyes found a picture of her sister-in-law. He wouldn't take his brother place in the family. It was his. He refused to take such a role.
He tightened his jaw and said whatever that came into his mind - even though it pained him far more than he could even imagine.
"Nobody can take the place of Vivek and Sadhna. Neither in this house, nor in this room and nor in this heart. And if your condition is that I step into Vivek's shoes, and Preeti into Sadhna's - I swear, I will never get married."
"They both sacrificed their love to get the family back together" Sadhna said as she came back from her flashback.
"I guess, that's how they are," Sapna commented as she let the words linger in the silence around them.
