Chapter 23:

Kabir was scheduled to return to Delhi that night, right after Chirag and Chaya's reception. Needless to say that he didn't attend the reception, nor could he even think of leaving Rachna alone in this situation. However, he had no choice in the latter matter but to leave for one day to sort out everything in his Delhi office and hand off the major responsibilities to his design assistant. Kabir returned to Mumbai and came straight to the Garg house late the next evening, where he was pained to find Rachna crying hysterically. As soon as she saw him standing in the doorway, she bolted out of the bed and ran into his arms. It was with great difficulty that he finally managed to quiet her down and convince her that he would be with her at all times.

"Kabir! How could you leave me like that? Promise me that you'll never go away from me again!"

"I'm sorry sweetheart. But I promise you Rachna. I won't leave you alone again."

Rachna's vulnerable state made it impossible for Kabir to leave her even for a few days. During the day she would be fine, spending her time surrounded by her family and busy with her daily activities of planning the upcoming vow renewal ceremony, going shopping, and going for rounds of therapy with her psychologist, Dr. Soumya Reddy. At night, however, Rachna found it impossible to sleep unless Kabir was by her side. This only meant one thing: that Kabir had to officially shift to Mumbai for some time until Rachna's therapy sessions were complete. It was tough for him to handle his work in Delhi while he himself was in Mumbai, but a very efficient manager and design assistant, along with the convenience of Skype calls and FaceTime, allowed Kabir to stay on top of his work load and still be with Rachna.

While Sneha and Akash were very accommodating, Kabir felt out of place living at his in-laws house. He had his own apartment in Malad that he had put up for rent when he had moved away from Mumbai. Now that he was back here for some time, it only made sense to shift into the apartment. With some convincing from his part, Sneha and Akash understood Kabir's situation and allowed him to move in to the apartment. It went without saying that Rachna moved with Kabir, for it was impossible to separate the two of them now. Kabir was Rachna's lifeline; she was more dependent on him now than she had ever been before. The recent events had triggered a psychological reaction that made it unthinkable for Rachna to be without Kabir.

More than anything else, Kabir wanted to catch the person who had assaulted Rachna. However, Rachna's own refusal to reveal anything about this matter to anyone but her therapist posed a major problem. In fact, Rachna had outright refused to speak about it to both Sneha and Kabir, the two people in the world whom she loved the most.

Kabir had finally talked to Chaya and Chirag about what had happened on the day of their wedding. They both had been shocked and Chaya had been inconsolable when she heard about what her friend had to go through, but neither had any clue about who could have possibly attacked Rachna. No one at Chaya's house had seen anyone suspiciously enter or leave the house on the wedding day. Before leaving for their honeymoon, Chaya and Chirag both came to visit Rachna in the Malad apartment, where she and Kabir were living.

"Hi Rachna. How are you?"

Rachna looked up from her laptop and was ecstatic to see her best friend. "Chaya! Oh my gosh! Come in! Chirag, please come take a seat."

Chaya embraced Rachna, while Kabir and Chirag high-fived each other. The two boys sat chatting in the living room, as Rachna went into the kitchen to make some coffee for everyone, with Chaya following closely behind her.

"Rachna? Why didn't you tell me about any of this? You and Kabir?"

Rachna looked up at Chaya. "I'm sorry. I guess I was just really broken when I left Mumbai to go to Benaras. Kabir was a part of my new life and I don't know why but I always had an inherent fear that connecting any part of my new life with my old one would cause him to go away from me. I didn't even tell Sneha mausi about it until a few weeks ago Chaya. I'm sorry."

Chaya hugged Rachna emotionally. "Okay, enough of this sappiness. I can't stay mad at you Rachna; especially when you've got such a hot husband!"

Rachna faked a shocked expression, but the two friends burst out laughing in no time. "You're too much Chaya! He's all mine! Go eye your own husband!"

"I definitely will Rachna. For the next 10 days, it's just going to be the two of us and I will eye him to all my heart's desire."

Rachna and Chaya walked out into the living room, where Kabir was ecstatic to see Rachna smiling and laughing again. These past few weeks had been extremely taxing for her and her smile had become lost in the clouds of worry and sadness. The four friends talked over coffee for some time, until Chaya and Chirag finally had to leave to catch their flight.

Rachna and Kabir wished the newly-wed couple. "Bye guys! Have fun on the honeymoon!"

In the meantime, Sneha had called Gunjan and asked her to come to Mumbai with Mayank for a few days. Hearing Sneha's voice had been enough to convince Gunjan to immediately come visit her mother and her childhood home. Seeing her daughter's protruding belly, Sneha was moved to tears. She hugged her Gunjan, wanting to make up for the time that she hadn't been with her daughter.

"I'm sorry beta. I've been so unfair to you. I'm so sorry."

"Mom, please. It's enough for me that you have been able to forgive me and accept me back into your life again."

"Where's Mayank? He didn't come with you Gunjan?"

"No, actually he had some work in Bangalore...I think he's observing a surgery. You know how it is mom. And he's still an intern so he can't even ask for a leave."

Seeing that Gunjan had arrived, Akash came downstairs and greeted his daughter. "Hey goody goody gum drops! Come here and give me a hug!"

Gunjan ran towards Akash and hugged him. "Papa! I'm so happy to see you again."

Sneha and Akash moved into the living room with Gunjan, where they chatted for some time.

"What?! Pihu didi's pregnant! That's awesome! Where is she? I want to congratulate her."

"She's gone out with Murli for a few days. They just wanted to spend some time together before the baby came."

"That's so nice. I'm really happy for her. But where's Rachna di?"

Sneha's smile faded. "Uh...Rachna? She's...she...uh..."

Akash interrupted Sneha. "Rachna's with her husband. They have an apartment in Malad."

Gunjan's eyes filled with tears. "Rachna di got married and you guys didn't tell me about it? Papa?"

"Gunjan beta, it's not that we didn't tell you about it. We didn't know about it ourselves until a few weeks ago. Actually, Rachna got married to Kabir about two years ago in Benaras..."

Akash revealed everything about Rachna and Kabir's story to Gunjan; how they had gotten married, why they had separated, and how the fake divorce papers had been the catalyst to bring them back together.

"So mausi ma's accident wasn't done by Karan Tripathi? Then who? Mom, who has been the person that is doing the community service? And who paid the fine of 50 lakhs?"

Sneha sighed. "It's all quite complicated Gunjan. Apparently Kabir's mother was behind the whole fake divorce fiasco. She has to be related to the accident case somehow as well, so we are assuming that it is she who paid the fine. And as for the person who we all had thought to be Karan; well, he's conveniently gone missing all of a sudden. The police are on the lookout for him, but it's the most bizarre thing ever. He mysteriously disappeared just as we found out who the real Karan Tripathi was and the whole truth behind Rachna and Kabir's relationship came out."

"Wow...it seems like I've missed a lot in these past few months. So is Rachna di going to come here today? Or maybe I can go visit her at her apartment? I want to see her as soon as possible. And of course meet my amazing jiju who was able to accomplish the nearly impossible task of convincing my own mother to forgive me."

Sneha looked away uncomfortably, while Akash smiled at his daughter's excitement. "You will love him Gunjan. He's the perfect guy for Rachna, so supportive and understanding. In just the short time that we've known him, he's become such a close part of our family. In fact, he's almost like the son we never had. What's say Sneha?"

Sneha nodded slightly before leaving the room to take a call that was just coming in on her cell phone.

"Hi Kabir. Is Rachna okay?"

"Namaste mausi ji. Yes, Rachna's absolutely fine. Actually I was just calling to let you know that Rachna and I won't be able to come to dinner today. The therapy session was particularly tough for her, so she fell asleep on the way home."

"Okay, I understand. Why don't you guys come over for lunch tomorrow then? I have a surprise for you two."

"Surprise? Can't wait to find out what it is. So we'll see you tomorrow then. Bye mausi ji!"

"Yeah, see you at lunch tomorrow. Bye Kabir beta."

Walking back into the living room, Sneha informed Akash and Gunjan of the new plans. "Okay you two, listen up. Rachna and Kabir will be over for lunch tomorrow. I haven't told them that you're here yet Gunjan, so it will be a complete surprise."

"Yay! I can't wait to see them!"

Once Kabir ended the call with Sneha, he sat on the bed next to Rachna and watched her as she slept peacefully. A few minutes later, his phone rang with a call from Rachna's therapist, Dr. Soumya Reddy.

"Hi Dr. Soumya, how are you doing?"

"I'm well Kabir. I was actually just calling to ask you how Rachna is doing. It was a particularly rough session for her as I mentioned to you when you came to pick her up earlier. She got quite disturbed."

"She's doing okay as of now doc. She actually fell asleep in the car on the way home. So far, she seems to be sleeping peacefully."

"That's good. I'm glad to hear that. Well, how are you coping with all this Kabir? I know it must be tough for you as well."

"I'm not going to lie to you doc. It's certainly been difficult to handle everything. I know my difficulties are nothing compared to what Rachna must be going through, but sometimes it's just hard to understand her mood swings. At one moment, she'll push me away deliberately, but then the next moment she wants me by her side again. The only thing that is consistent is our nighttime routine, when she needs to hold on to me to fall asleep."

"I understand Kabir that it must be quite hard for you to deal with these things, but you've been doing a great job so far. Rachna's face always lights up when she talks about you during our sessions. And you really help me out by giving me updates about Rachna every day...I know you're a busy man yourself so thank you for taking the time out to talk to me every night."

"She's my life doc. Nothing is more important for me than Rachna. We've faced a lot during our time together and that makes me value her presence in my life even more."

"You two are really just made for each other. Anyways, I also wanted to ask if it was possible for you to attend a few of her upcoming therapy sessions. I think it would be good for her to have you there in the room, as I wanted to try something new that I would need you for."

"I'm absolutely fine with it, but are you sure Rachna will be up for it? I mean she has refused to share anything with me about this. We talk non-stop about everything else, but she clams up entirely at even the slightest mention of this topic."

"She might surprise you today Kabir. Anyways, we'll try it out and see where it gets us. I'll see you at the session tomorrow then?"

"Sure, I'll be there. See you tomorrow doc."

Kabir was getting ready to go to bed when the doorbell rang. Opening the door, he found Karan and Rhea standing in the entry way.

"Karan? Rhea? Come on in guys. What a pleasant surprise. So, what can I get you? Water, juice, coffee?"

"Nothing bro. We're just here to see Rachna bhabhi. Is she okay? I haven't met her since that day when...you know. Anyways, where is she?"

"Come, have a seat. Rachna's actually sleeping right now. She had a particularly rough therapy session today, so she fell asleep as soon as we got home."

"Oh really? So is Rachna doing better now that she's in therapy Kabir ji?"

"It's baby steps Rhea. But yeah, there's certainly progress."

"Bhai, are you okay? I mean I can't even begin to imagine how you must be feeling through all this."

"I'm fine Karan. I just want Rachna to be okay."

"Bhabhi will be absolutely fine. Trust me."

"I know. Anyways, when are you guys here in Mumbai until?"

"Actually Kabir ji, we're thinking of staying. Karan has a job offer right here in Mumbai and..." Rhea trailed off as she showed off the back of her hand to Kabir.

Seeing the glittering diamond on her ring finger, Kabir broke into a huge smile. "Congrats you two! That's pretty awesome! So you finally decided to take the plunge hunh little bro?"

"Yeah bhai, the wedding fever just got to me. Anyways, I was actually wondering if I could move in with you until I find a place of my own."

"Is that even something you have to ask Karan? Of course you can stay with us. There's more than enough room here; it's a four bedroom apartment."

"Thanks bhai. I'll probably move in sometime tomorrow then. I guess we should get going now, we'll let you go off to bed."

Kabir stood up and hugged both Karan and Rhea. "Thanks for stopping over you two. I'll have your bedroom ready for you tomorrow little bro."

Kabir returned to the bedroom after both Karan and Rhea had left and sat next to Rachna. He gently ran his hand through her hair as he smiled; he loved seeing her sleep so peacefully. As he was watching Rachna, Kabir saw her lips move and heard her murmur softly in her sleep.

"Stay away from me. Don't...don't you dare touch me. Get away...get away. Leave me!"

Rachna sat up in bed with a jerk. Seeing Kabir on the bed next to her, she immediately hugged him.

"Rachna? Are you okay? Did you have the nightmare again?"

He felt the nod of her head against his shoulder, as her wrapped his arms around Rachna to comfort her. He hesitated slightly before asking, "Do you want to talk about it?"

Expecting the immediate no that he usually got, Kabir was surprised to find that Rachna responded affirmatively. She broke away from his embrace and adjusted herself into a comfortable position next to him. Holding his hand, Rachna looked down as her lower lip trembled, threatening to release the flood of tears from her eyes.

"Dr. Soumya said today that she wants me to push myself and talk about this with you...if...if I feel comfortable. Can we...can we talk?"

Without a moment of hesitation, Kabir squeezed Rachna's hand and nodded at her. "Of course sweetheart. I'm always here for you."

"It's hard for me to talk about this Kabir. I have tried really hard to forget it...to hide it. I didn't tell anyone about it because I was scared. It happened more than 3 years ago. It...he...he didn't...uh...didn't rrr...rrr...ra...rape me. I...I ran...ran away bef...before he could...you know...dd...do anything. But I was terrified of what papa would say...terrified of what he would think. So I stayed quiet. Then those same hands...the same voice...I...I just know...it was him...that day...on the day of Chaya's wedding. It...it was...was like reopening the same...the same box of fears...the same insecurities. I...I...I just...couldn't hide it. I...I felt...felt like...I...I was dro...drow...drowning in...in ddd...dar...darkness."

"It's okay Rachna. You're absolutely safe right now. No one's going to hurt you."

Rachna's face was wet with tears and she was shaking from the effort that it took to talk about her most terrorizing experience. "Kk...Kabi...Kabir. I...I did...I didn't know...who it was until...until a...a few months ago. I never saw his face...but that...that voice...I could never...never forget it. It rings in my ears. I heard that voice and I...I just...knew it was him. It...it wa...it was...Mayank."
