Pre-Wedding Days

Next day Tara woke up early and went home to get ready for college.

Mrityunjay went into Dadaji's room.
"Son, come sit near me. Did you call Panditji to fix the wedding date??"
"Dadaji..." After taking a short pause he continued, "Actually...Tara wants this wedding to be done in a simple way as you and her mother both are not well. She thinks blessings are important in marriage rather than decorations."

Dadaji was impressed with Tara's view. "As she says son."
"Dadaji...I will take the first date available from the registrar."

"Yes son."
"This girl is correct for Mrityunjay." He smiled thinking this.

*****

Tara visited the hospital before going to college. After 9 o'clock Tara's phone rang. It was Mrityunjay's call. Talking to Mrityunjay was never awkward or hesitating to her but today it was.

Seeing Tara not taking the call, Aradhana snatched her phone from her hand. Seeing Mrityunjay's name she immediately took the call.

"Hello beta."
"Hello Aunty, How are you?"
"I am fine. Talk to Tara..."

"No need Aunty. I called to inform that the wedding date has been fixed after one week."
"Ok beta." Mrityunjay hung up the phone.

"Tara, did you hear? Your wedding is after one week. Oh...Thank you God..." Aradhana said in one breath.
Tara stood up to leave for college, Aradhana interrupted her.
"Tara now you should leave this job, as you are going to be married."

"Mom..." she rolled her eyes. Already her head was spinning because of the sudden changes and now this.
"Ok, don't leave but take a month's holiday... you can do that at least..."
"Ok Mom I will."

*****

After reaching college, Tara gave application for one month holiday, stating her wedding as the reason. Her application was accepted. This news spread in college like wildfire. Everyone congratulated her. Yug, Adi, Meethi, Vasu, Bunty and Nandu went to wish Tara.

"Congrats Ma'am!" All shouted with joy.
"Thank you students," she smiled.
"Ma'am, may we know who is the lucky man who you are going to marry??" asked Vasu hesitatingly.

Tara smiled. She saw all the students were waiting for her answer.
"You know him."

"We know him!!" Bunty exclaimed in surprise.
"Yug it's your Mrityunjay Bhai."

All students rejoiced with this news.
Excited with this news, Adi asked, "Ma'am can we come to the wedding?"

"Students it's not the type of wedding that you are hoping for, it's a court marriage."
"So what ma'am, we would like to join this happy occasion." Meethi expressed their desire to be part of her happiness.
"Ok then see you next week at the registrar office." She smiled.
Tara was trying to be normal with this sudden change of events.

*****

In the evening Tara was at the hospital. Mrityunjay too arrived there as his regular visit to Aradhana. He stayed there till the end of visiting hours.

When he was leaving, he asked Tara if she was going home then he would drop her there.
Tara refused, as she wanted to spend as much time as possible with Aradhana in the remaining days before the wedding.

Aradhana cupped Tara's face and said, "Go Tara, collect your childhood memories from home. Pack up the things that you would like to take to your new life."

"How could one collect a journey of a lifetime in one bag?" thought Tara, but to keep her mom's wish she left with Mrityunjay.

In the car both were quiet. This time to break the ice Tara initiated the talk.
"How is Dadaji??"

"He is better than yesterday. Hearing our wedding news worked as medicine for him."

After this conversation, there was again silence in the car.

Now Mrityunjay initiated, "Who is coming from your side to the registrar office as witness?"

"My HOD and Principal."

"Ok. From my side Dr. Fahim and Dadaji will come."

"Aa...Yug and his friends, they are also coming."

"That will be great as I was thinking to ask you about that."
She smiled hearing Mrityunjay.

After reaching home, Tara was going through her stuff for what she would take to Mrityunjay's house, when she found the family album. Tears were flowing from her eyes seeing her childhood days with her mom and dad. She also found her college slam book.

She opened it to see how stupid she was in her college days. She was laughing while reading it. She stopped at one page. She remembered how her friend had asked her views about marriage and she wrote this.

"Marriage...a complicated recipe in which love is the most important ingredient, without love marrying is like cooking a dish without its main ingredient which is equal to not cooking it at all. So before marriage you should love the person to whom you are getting married." She smiled reading it.

Her inner self bugged her, "Tara, why are you smiling?? You are getting married. Do you love him?? You said that love is important for marriage, and now you are marrying without loving him??"

She smiled and tried to convince it by saying, "This was written by a college girl who didn't know what life actually is. But I know. Sometimes we have to do some things because it is the right thing to do at that time and love...Love...it can happen anytime."

A Day Before The Wedding

One by one days were passing and the wedding date was coming near. Every day Mrityunjay visited the hospital and while returning, he first dropped Tara at her apartment and then went home. Dadaji renovated Mrityunjay's room, removed all his painting stuff to his study room. Tara bought a red saree having light embroidery on it for her wedding. The day before the wedding, Mrityunjay went to meet the doctor. Tara saw him coming out of the doctor's cabin. She thought to ask him but didn't ask as she thought it must be about something related to work.

Tara was sitting next to Aradhana when her mom started crying. She consoled her and asked the reason for it.
"Tara, I wanted to apply mehendi on your hands, dance in your sangeet but see I can't do anything," Aradhana sobbed.

Tara hugged her and said, "Mom, don't take tension. What is more important is that I am getting married and I want my mom to smile when I will leave her house. I can't see you crying mom."

Mrityunjay was standing outside the door. Seeing this, his eyes got moist seeing this mother-daughter talk. He immediately left the hospital and came back there after fifteen minutes.

"Aunty, see I brought something for you." Mrityunjay handed over a box to Aradhana.

Aradhana was confused what he might have brought. When she opened the box, she was surprised. Tears of happiness replaced tears of sorrow from her eyes. The box was full of mehendi cones.

"Thank you beta."

Tara who was standing near the window came to see what was there in the box. Seeing the mehendi cones, her eyes too moistened.

Aradhana took one cone and started applying it on Tara's hand. She was humming a song.

~Banno teri ankhiyan suramedani
Banno tera mukhada lakh ka re
Banno teraa kangan hai hazari
Banno tera kangan ...~

Tears continued to flow from the eyes of both mother and daughter. Mrityunjay was quietly watching them. After the mehendi was applied on Tara's hand, Aradhana looked towards Mrityunjay.

"I am blessed that's why I am going to get a son-in-law like you."
"Aunty..."
"Call me mom."

Mrityunjay was happy hearing this. Years ago, he had called out this very word repeatedly, chasing after a saree pallu with tiny feet pumping as his short hands stretched out to grab hold of her. Now, he was able to call out that beautiful word "Mom again. He hugged Aradhana.

They were talking when Mrityunjay got a call from office. He left the room to take that call.

Seeing it to be appropriate time to talk to Tara, Aradhana said, "Beta, from tomorrow your life is going to change, you will be Mrs. Mrityunjay Singh Shekhawat. Child, be one with that family like you were never separate from them. Be like salt in water, which dissolves itself in water as if it was never separate from it. Give your love to all. That's all the advice that I can give you."

Mrityunjay entered the room. As visiting hours were over, it was time for them to leave.
Aradhana was looking at Tara, who would be the daughter-in-law of the Shekhawats from tomorrow.

In the car, Tara thanked Mrityunjay for bringing the mehendi.
"I will send the car to your apartment. Be ready, the registrar has given 10 am appointment."
"I will be."

"Is anyone coming with you tomorrow??" he asked hesitatingly, as he knew her relationship with her cousins was strained after her mother's illness.
"Yes Vasu, Meethi and Nandu. They will come to my house and then we will come to the office," she replied giving a quick glance at her mehendi.

After leaving Tara at her apartment, he went home.

*****

"Mrityunjay beta, I am so happy for you," a sixty-five year old man said coming near him.
"Raghu Kaka!!" He smiled seeing his Raghu Kaka was back in the mansion, and hugged him.

He was the one who helped Dadaji in raising him. He is the servant of this mansion for namesake but in reality he is like a family member. He too doesn't have another family expect Dadaji and Mrityunjay, they are his family.

"When did you come Kaka?...I missed you so much..."

"Beta, I came today and on arriving I heard you are getting married ...I am so happy beta...All my prayers got answered...my pilgrimage gave its fruitful result..." He was caressing Mrityunjay's face like a father cares for his son when his son brings a winning trophy.

"I told Sir... few months back that this mansion needs a woman's care... and who had thought that this wish would be fulfilled so early..." His voice and face clearly reflected how happy he was.

"Ok beta now go freshen up, have dinner and sleep. Tomorrow is a big day for you."
Mrityunjay was calmly listening to his Kaka rejoicing.

After dinner Mrityunjay was in his room, standing in his balcony thinking about how will his life be after marriage.

"Tara is my friend but tomorrow after the wedding she will be my wife!!! How will we deal with this change in our relationship??"
Many other questions were there in his mind.

Tara was also confused like Mrityunjay, but she was remembering the sweet and bitter moments spent with her family more.

In this way, the week before their wedding which was the last week of their old life passed. They are now ready for a new beginning. Confused like a 24 year boy and girl. Marrying for the sake of their loved ones. But will they love each other ever???
Oh... Nainital, I am so happy for them that I can't express it. Today I dedicate this song to them:

~Do anjaane ajnabi chale baadhne bandhan
Haye re dil mein hai yeh uljhan mil kar kya bole
Kya bole kya bole re mil kar kya bole ~

Yours
Mumbai
