CHAPTER 4. LET THE MADNESS... ERR... TRAINING BEGIN!

It was the day after the bet was established and once again Arnav, Aakash and Anjali were seated at the dining table with the brother duo discussing the business and their sister rolling her eyes. Once again the bell rang interrupting their breakfast and once again Anjali jumped up at the prospect of opening the door. But unlike the other day, today she knew who was calling at this time of the day. She scrambled off to get to the door. Anjali was very eager to meet Khushi for a single reason and that was from now on, she won't be the only female staying in the house. Once all the greetings were over, Anjali brought Khushi over to their dining room.

After declining the invitation for having breakfast with them, "Nahi Anjaliji! Hum na ghar se khaake nikle hain!" (No Anjaliji! I have already eaten at home!), Khushi sat down on one of the chairs waiting for Anjali to finish her breakfast as Anjali was the one to take her over to her new lodging. Her luggage had already been transported to her room by the servants. Khushi, bored out of her mind, looked around for some amusement. Her eyes fell on Arnav and Aakash's eating style. Both ate with knife and fork and Khushi looked at them with wide eyes. It was not that Khushi had never seen people eat with kaanta-churi', after all she has been working as a waitress for last few years, seeing people eat in such a manner was not new to her. But till now she had dismissed the eating style preferring to eat by her hand than all this taam-jhaam'.

It was only now Khushi realised that this will be part of her training too. She would have to eat in such manner too. She gulped and looked at her hands. Wasn't today she ate her roti with her hands while sitting on the sofa Indian style? She looked over at Anjali and noticed how poised she seemed to be seated. She realised that she will have to abandon all her carefree mannerism and behavior. Hey Devi Maiyya! It was only now the enormity of the bet and the upcoming training struck her. Feeling nervous she almost did not notice Anjali calling her name.

Khushi looked up to see Anjali smiling at her, "Aayiye Khushiji! Hum aapko aapka kamra dikha dete hain!" (Come Khushiji! I will show you to your room!) Khushi nodded and followed Anjali as Anjali gave her a tour of the whole house and then dropped her off to her room on the first floor with a side note that she will pick Khushi up after an hour so that they can kick start her training.

Khushi looked around the room with wide eyes. It was grand and larger than her former room. A four poster bed with curtains around it was placed right opposite the door. On both sides of the bed, there was a huge window overlooking the lawn outside. On one side was a dressing table with a large mirror and on the other side was a door which Khushi guessed led to bathroom. Right beside the door was a large wardrobe. Once done with looking around, Khushi ran upto the window and looked outside eagerly. In front of her, the vast lawn lay. There were swings to play with, trees to sit under, flower beds to look at. Khushi sighed as she imagined herself lying under the shade enjoying a good book, playing with the swings, smelling the flowers. She sighed dreamily. How wonderful it would be to stay in the house and enjoy the lawn forever! Then her head snapped up and she shook herself. Khushi! Tum paagal hogayi ho! Aise sapne dekhna chod do! Jab kayi saal baad tumhaare paas bahut paise aa jaayenge na, toh aisa hi ek ghar khareed lena! Lekin abhi tum aaj ki baat karo! Training pe dhyaan do! (Khushi! Have you gone mad? Stop dreaming such dreams! When one day you will have more money, you can buy a house just like this. But right now you focus on today. Focus on your training!) She nodded to herself and sat on the bed waiting for Anjali to come back.

An hour later, Anjali and Khushi entered the study to see Arnav and Aakash sitting in their armchairs reading newspapers. Anjali rolled her eyes and took a seat nearby. Khushi stood on the threshold of the room wringing her hands nervously. Arnav looked up from the paper, gave her a stern glare and pointed towards the chair which was in front of Aakash and Arnav's chair facing both the men. Khushi took a deep breath, walked towards the chair and took the seat. Arnav folded his paper, got up from his seat and started pacing.

"Khushi! Before we start our training sessions, there are some rules that we want you to follow!", Arnav barked and Khushi nodded with trepidation.

Arnav paused for a second and then spoke, "Rule No. 1. You will follow every order of mine!"

Khushi nodded vigorously.

"Rule No. 2. You will address me as Sir!", Arnav continued.

Khushi nodded.

"And Rule No. 3. You are speaking in only English from today! Got it?", Arnav barked.

Khushi nodded and Arnav narrowed his eyes, "Stop nodding like a donkey and say something! Or do you not even understand English?"

Khushi huffed, "Humein English samajh aati hai! Thode kam seekhe hain, unpadh nahi!" (I can understand English! I am less learned, not illiterate!)

"Speak in English please!", Aakash intoned from behind the paper.

Arnav frowned at Aakash, stalked towards him and grabbed the newspaper out of his hand only to see Aakash holding a camcorder. Arnav raised an eyebrow at Aakash and Aakash smiled sheepishly, "I want to record your sessions!" He raised the camcorder and looked through the view finder, "Say cheese Arnav Bhai!"

Arnav glared at him and Aakash retorted, "Oh come on bhai! It is my money you are playing with. I have every right to record the session to make sure you are not wasting my money!"

Arnav narrowed his eyes for a while and then rolling his eyes went back to his pacing.

Aakash grinned gleefully and recorded the session more blatantly.

"And Khushi! Do you understand me?", Arnav growled.

" Understand!", Khushi squeaked and Arnav stopped pacing. He turned around and looked at Khushi, "Understood! Not understand! School mein past tense present tense toh sikhaaya hoga right?" (You must have been taught past tense and present tense at school right?)

Khushi frowned in confusion and Anjali helped her, "Bhoot kaal? Bhavishya kaal?"

Khushi's face brightened and she nodded, "Hum samajh gaye!"

Aakash looked at Khushi in concern, "School mein English subject nahi tha kya?" (Didn't you have English subject at school?)

Khushi shrugged, "Tha!"

Arnav glared at Khushi, "Then how you donot know present tense and past tense? What were you doing in your English class?"

Khushi grinned eagerly, "Hum na, apne saheliyon ke saath chane ke khet' gaane par dance steps bithaate the!" (I was setting the dance steps for the song Chane ke khet' with my friends!)

Aakash chuckled, Arnav slapped his forehead and Anjali shook her head. All three thought of same thing; we are doomed!

Few hours later...

Khushi was looking out of the window in her room when Arnav stormed in and threw a bunch of books onto her bed. Khushi looked at him, then at the books and then back at Arnav and frowned, "Yeh sab kya hai?"

Arnav raised an eyebrow and Khushi amended her words, "What is this?"

Arnav shook his head, "Is' is used for singular, are' is used for plural! This' is used for singular, these' is used for plural."

Khushi frowned in confusion and Arnav rolled his eyes. His massaged the bridge of his nose thinking and then he looked at her, "Singular means Ek vachan, Plural is bahu vachan!"

Khushi blinked and then Arnav saw understanding dawn on her face as her eyes lit up and a wide smile came on her lips. Arnav rolled his eyes.

Khushi asked her question again, "What are these?"

Arnav smirked at her, "These are grammar books. Go through all of them today!"

Khushi's eyes widened, "Aaj hi? I mean today only?"

Arnav gave her a sarcastic smile, "Yes my dear! Today only!"

"But?...How?...One day?...", Khushi squeaked and stuttered unable to express herself. If only she had been allowed to speak in Hindi, she would have told Arnav what exactly she thought of his latest idea but unfortunately she was stuck with stammering in English and the inability to express herself. She huffed in anger.

"How? I don't know! Pull an all-nighter! I don't care! Get it done! I already have to work on your accent; I don't have the patience to correct your every grammatical mistake! So you read it and better get it done today!", Arnav retorted.

Khushi looked at the books in worry.

"But what if... I not... understand...words?", Khushi spoke slowly unaccustomed to speaking English and thinking her words thoroughly to get it right.

Arnav was about to point out that you are supposed to use the verb do' before not' here but gave up. Forget it! What are the books for? They will teach her!

Arnav pulled out a book from the stack, "This is Dictionary; in your language, shabdkosh. It translates English words into Hindi. Problem solved. Use it and enjoy your study night!"

Saying his piece Arnav stalked away leaving behind a whining Khushi, "Hey Devi Maiyya!"

It was late night and Anjali, who was about to go to bed, frowned when she saw the study room's light on. Hey Bhagwan! Yeh Chote aur Aakash bhi na! Kaam, kaam aur sirf kaam! Bas yahi karna hai din bhar! Kisko padi hai ki sharir ko aath ghante ki neend chaahiye! Kisko padi hai ki insaan ko bhi aaraam ki jaroorat hai! Hey Bhagwan! Hum kya karein in dono ka! (Work, work and work! That's all they do all day! Who cares that the body needs eight hours' sleep! Who cares that human needs rest too! God! What am I going to do with these two!) She stormed over to their room and entered it only to stop short at the scene in front of her. Right in front of her sat Arnav and Aakash holding a book in their hand, going through it while another stack was waiting by the table for their perusal. Anjali frowned, Itni raat ko kya padh rahe hain? (What are they reading at such a late time?) She narrowed her eyes and stepped forward. Her eyes widened as she realised that the books were of hindi words and grammar. Ab yeh sab kyun padh rahe hain? ( Now why are they reading these books?) As if understanding her questions, they looked up. Anjali raised an eyebrow in question and Arnav replied, "Ek vachan! Bahu vachan!", and went back to reading the book as if that explained the whole situation. Anjali blinked in the confusion and then looked at Aakash who smiled at her, "To explain things to Khushi, we have to translate the terms from English to Hindi! So we are learning hindi terms here!"

"Aakash", Arnav interrupted him, "Did you know present tense is known as vartaman kaal in hindi?"

"Oh really?", Aakash looked surprised, "Interesting!"

Both the men went back to their books leaving a slack jawed Anjali standing at the door.

Her brothers must have turned mad; Anjali decided. She gave them another glance; definitely mad.

NOTE:

I have been requested by some of the readers to either write the dialogues in English or atleast translate them. I have attempted the translation option above. I did not translate everything as some of the lines are repeated by Khushi in English and some of the lines are so simple, that they do not need translation like the line, "Yeh Chote aur Aakash bhi na!"

Please tell me if you are ok with this selective translation. If you people are ok, then I will translate the earlier chapters in the same manner too.

Also I made Arnav impose that English speaking rule on Khushi, so that I won't have to translate much. She will still continue to speak in hindi some places, but there I will put up the translations.

And the whole grammar mistakes which Khushi speaks with are not overdone. I live in rural area and the present and past tense mistakes and singular and plural mistakes is something all my college friends used to suffer with.

Thanks, take care and have fun,

Kalpana
