Part 23

Arjun And Dron--Kaaliya-mardan

Guru Dron Started To Teach The Princes Various Martial Skills. Yudhishthir Showed Special Interest In Spears, Bheem And Duryodhan In Mace, Arjun In Bows And Arrows, Nakul In Swords And Sahdev In Scimitars. Arjun Through His Dedication And Resultant Excellence, Became The Sage's Favorite.

Sage Dron Often Used To Send The Children To The River To Fetch Water. Everyday, Arjun Noticed That He Always Was The Second Person To Reach The Tree Where Guru Dron Conducted The Classes, While Ashwatthama, Dron's Son, Was Always The First. He Didn't Mind At First. He Had Much Important Things To Do In Life Rather Than Going About Spying On His Teacher's Son. But As The Days Passed, Arjun Grew Increasingly Suspicious. One Day He Went And Hid In A Corner, And Saw,That The Pot That Dron Gave To Ashwatthama, Was Much Bigger And Wider. Arjun Clenched His Fists And With Much Difficulty Stopped Himself From Going And Protesting. I'll Take Care Of That By My Skill, He Thought.

At The River Bank, He Quietly Moved Away To A Corner, And Used The Varunaastra, The Weapon Of The God Of Water, To Fill His Pot In A Moment's Time, And He Rushed Towards The Ashram. He Reached Just In Time As Ashwatthama Was Keeping His Pot In Place. Arjun Put His Small Beside The Large One Of Ashwatthama, And Said With A Naughty Smile, "Let's Have A Race To The Peepal Tree. What Say ?" Ashwatthama Glared At Him Helplessly, As He Knew That He Couldn't Beat Arjun In Speed, As The Latter Ran Like A Mouse. Ashwatthama Understood, That Henceforth, He Will Not Be The Only One To Learn The Special Tricks And Spells Which Guru Dron Kept To The First And 'Fast' Boys.

In Gokul, Krishna Was, As Usual, Out To The Lush Green Fields Of Vrindavan, With His Cows And Friends. A Beautiful Lake From The Waters Of Yamuna Had Been Created There. A Poisonous Snake Named Kaaliya Stayed There. Krishna Had Heard Of That, But His Friends Hadn't. Before Krishna Could Warn Them, A Few Boys Had Already Drank The Water, And Were Now Lying On The Grass, Dead. The Other Boys Surrounded Them And Started Crying.Krishna Sighed, ans Shouted, "SEE ! THERE'S A SNAKE JUST BEHIND YOU !" The Boys Screamed And Turned To Find Nothing, As Krishna Used The Second To Breathe New Lives Into The Dead Boys.

Now That His Friends Were Fine, Krishna Turned His Attention To The River. His Sharp Eyes Could Sense The Part Of The Pool Where The Serpent Was Thrashing Its Tail As The Water Swiveled Like A Whirlpool. Krishna Decided To Teach The Snake A Sound Lesson. He Removed His Jewellery And Uttariya, And Jumped Into The Waters, Splashing It Around. Surprised By The Thunderous Noise Above Him, Kaliya Looked Up, To See A Beautiful, Dusky Boy Making His Way Through The Poisonous Waters. He Could Not Help Marveling At The Skill Of The Boy. Krishna, Reading His Mind, Laughed Out. Kaaliya Took It For A Mockery Of His Poison (i.e. The Boy Was Still Alive Despite Entering The Poisonous Water.) And Immediately Caught Him With His [Kaaliya's] Tail. Kaaliya Tried To Throw Him On The Nearby Rock, But Krishna Wouldn't Be Moved Even An Inch. Kaaliya Tried On And On, But Without Success. Seeing Kaaliya Tired And Weak, Krishna Uncoiled Himself And Jumped On To The Head Of The Snake And Asked It To Take Him Out Of The Water. Kaaliya Refused To Do As He Was Told. Krishna, Enraged, Hit The Naag With His Feet. Kaaliya, Squirming With Pain, Rose Above The Water.

Meanwhile The Boys Had Called All The Villagers To The River. They Watched With A Mixed Feeling Of Delight And Astonishment, As They Saw Their Little Boy Dancing Around On The Many Hoods Of The Snake.

Kaaliya Continuously Tried To Bite Kanha, But He Always Jumped Off To Another Hood And The Snake Ended Up Biting Himself, While Krishna Giggled Away. This Continued For A Time Which Seemed Around A Minutes For The Villagers, But An Eternity For Kaaliya's Wives, Who Rushed Around To Get A Proper View Of The Boy Who Not Only Overcame Their Husband But Also Was Dancing On Him With Such Force, That The Snake Was About To Faint. At Last, They Got Hold Of Krishna's Feet And, Asked For Pardon On Behalf Of Their Husband. Kanha Said, "Fine, If You Say So. But On The Condition That You Will Leave This Place For Ever." They Agreed And Left.

At The Gurukul, Guru Dron Had Instructed The Servants To Never Let Arjun Eat In Darkness. "There Should Always Be At Least A Small Lamp Beside Him. A Few Days Later, Arjun Was A Bit Troubled. He Was Finding It Very Difficult To Keep Up With Karna, A Charioteer's Son From Hastinapur. He Was Surprised, As Both Of Them Practiced For The Same Time. He Kept On Thinking About This While He Ate. As He Finished He Realized, The Lamp Had Gone Out Long Ago. A Thought Came Into His Mind, That If He Could Not Defeat Karna By Practicing All Day (With Duryodhan And His Brothers Continuously Jeering At Him) Then He [Arjun] Could Surely Defeat Him [Karna] By Practicing All Night.

Arjun Did As His Mind Directed Him To. Seeing His Urge To Excel, Dron Pulled His Close And Said, "Son, I Promise, None Will Be Equal To You In Archery In This Great Wide World."
