Four Weeks Later
At the bunker, Sam favors his injured shoulder and calls one of his contacts, Mike, who reports that here have been no signs of demonic activity. Sam goes back to work listening to the radio and checking Internet articles. He takes a break to check Dean's room, and looks at the note Dean left him saying to let him go. Back at the computer, Sam finds an article about a missing man in Ohio who turned up dead. He calls Castiel and tells him that a man named Drew Neely went missing from a religious order, and went missing three years ago after he killed his family. Sam figures that it's the first lead they've got. Castiel is ill and Sam tries to dismiss it as nothing, When the angel says that Sam can't blame him for what the demon did to his shoulder, Sam says that it's okay and admits that he's tired. Castiel admits that he misses Dean and wonders why he left, and they both wonder if Dean is still himself.
A drunken Dean is in a bar singing karaoke while Crowley talks with a couple of demons. The crowd boos him and Dean heads off to pick up a waitress, Anne Marie. Later, she realizes that she overslept and admits that the sex was good. As she dresses, Dean tells her not to get too attached because he's just passing through. Anne Marie says that there are other ways he could have said it. Crowley comes in and asks what is going on, complaining that they're in his bed.
Anne Marie excuses herself and Crowley tells Dean to get dressed. They then play foosball against two local men. As the play, Dean assures Crowley that Anne Marie meant nothing to him. As they play, Anne Marie's boyfriend Matt drags her outside. Dean goes after them, asks if there's a problem, and then starts beating Matt. Crowley comes out and watches as Dean tells Matt to stay away from Anne Marie. He turns back to Anne Marie, who glares at him. Dean goes back inside with Crowley as a man watches them with interest.
Castiel is trying to sleep when Hannah turns up at his doorstep. She explains that she and the angels have no leader, and Metatron is still imprisoned. She wonders why Castiel hasn't come back to them, and says that Heaven needs his help. Most of the angels returned to heaven but some rogues have refused. Two of them, Daniel and Adina, killed an angel for trying to break them back. Hannah wants them punished for their crime and Castiel agrees to help her.
Sam goes to the police station in Ohio and the detective in charge says that nobody is certain that Drew was murdered. He thinks that it was self-defense and shows Sam the recently recovered surveillance footage.
That night, Dean goes out behind the bar and addresses the man who has been watching him, well aware that he's there. The demon steps out holding a demon-killing knife.
Sam and the detective watch the footage from the convenience store and see Drew attack a man.
Dean figures that demon is one of Abaddon's soldiers like the others that have come after him for revenge. He draws the First Blade and attacks the demon, killing him.
Drew's victim draws the First Blade and kills him, and Sam realizes that the intended victim is his brother. The detective says that the photo of the killer is being sent out on the wires. Sam asks him to give him a moment alone and freezes the image, and realizes that Dean's eyes are demon black.
A man, Cole, is at home training. His wife makes breakfast for their son, who notices a fax coming in. He gives it to his father and Cole confirms that it has a picture of a man on it. Cole's wife asks if it's him, and then breaks into tears and walks out. Cole gets several guns from his arsenal and loads up, then looks again at the fax with Dean's photo on it.
Castiel and Hannah are forced to pull over when Hannah gets nauseous from his old car bumping along. She realizes that he's dying and figures that he needs to obtain more grace, but Castiel says that they're mission takes precedent. He says that she's a brave soldier, and refuses to let an angel die so he can be saved. Hannah drops the matter and they move on.
Sam talks to the store clerk, who demonstrated in graphic detail how Dean killed Drew. The clerk admits that he didn't get any details since someone was committing a murder in front of him. However, he did find Drew's phone on the floor and asks Sam to take it back to the station. Outside, Sam checks the call log and finds a reference to Abaddon. He also finds Crowley's number in the log and calls him, and accuses him of killing Dean and getting a demon to impersonate him. Crowley says that Dean is now a Demon thanks to the Mark of Cain. Sam doesn't believe him and figures that he's sending Abaddon's soldiers to attack Dean. Crowley figures that Sam hates it that Dean is with Crowley and having the time of his life, Sam vows to kill him but Crowley points out that he has no way to find him and hangs up. Once he does, Sam checks the phones and realizes that he can track Crowley's GPS to the bar in North Dakota.
Castiel and Hannah find Daniel fishing at a creek. They confront him and the angel talks about how he enjoys fishing. He says that the fish that want to be free put up a fight, and assure Castiel that they only fought in self-defense. Hannah insists that they all serve at Heaven's command, but Daniel says that was before the Fall. They were dropped into a strange land that celebrates the freedom of the individual, and he likes the fact that he has choices. Hannah draws her knife and prepares to kill him, but Castiel says that there is time to convince Daniel to do the right thing. He points out that they don't know where Adina is, and Daniel invites them to stay for the sunset.
Crowley tells Dean that he sent the demons to keep him sharp. He explains that the Mark needs to be sated from time to time, and finally tells Dean that they need to talk about their professional future. Crowley is sick of the bar, and Dean reminds him that they agreed to party as much as he wanted. The demon king says that it's time to accept what they are and go back to work, creating the perfect Hell. As he goes, Crowley says that he talked to Sam earlier and he let Sam trace the call. He tells Dean that he's tried to do him a favor and advises him to take the night to consider what he's going to do next.
Sam is driving through the night when his engine goes out. As he goes to check on it, a car pulls up and Cole walks over and offers him some help. He opens the hood and reveals that he rigged a kill switch to the car, and knocks Sam out before he can draw his gun.
Dean drinks and sings karaoke as everyone boos him. Anne Marie finally cuts him off and when a bouncer tries to get him off the stage, and Dean knocks him out. The next morning, Anne Marie takes him back to his motel room and tries to treat his hangover. Dean suggests that they go somewhere but she isn't interested. She admits that she was impressed when Dean took on Matt, but realized that it had nothing to do with Dean protecting her honor. Anne Marie admits that she thought he was a good guy, and Dean admits that he's just a guy on the road sleeping with every skank he meets. Crying, Anne Marie walks out.
Daniel makes camp and talks about the wisdom that can be gained from humans. Hannah doesn't understand what he means, and Adina steps out with the blade in her hands and says that they're never going back to Heaven. Hannah draws her blade and Castiel and Daniel try to calm them down. The two women ignore them and fight, and Daniel goes to help, picking up Adina's knife. Before he can stab Hannah, Castiel kills him. Adina stabs him and runs off, and Castiel tells Hannah that it's over.
Cole takes Sam to a silo and ties him up, and takes out a pair of wire cutters. He tells Sam that he goes way back with Dean, and Sam warns him to stay away from Dean because he's a monster. Cole agrees and says that Dean was a monster months ago, but now Dean is the prey and Cole is the monster.
As Castiel and Hannah drive back, Hannah says that they have to report it in. Castiel insists that Daniel and Adina just wanted to be left alone. Hannah insists that without rules there is chaos, and chaos gave them angels like Metatron. Castiel points out that he's been among humanity enough to know that good things also come from chaos, like love and hope. Hannah points out that those are human things, and Castiel agrees.
Dean is driving and gets a call on Sam's phone. It's Cole, who says that if Dean turns up then Sam will be fine. Cole puts Sam on the phone to confirm that he's alive, and punches him when he refuses. Dean tells the ex-soldier that he's not coming and that it's Sam's fault for coming after him. He hangs up and Cole considers what to do next.
