A canvas board smoothed down by calloused hands.
"That right hand corner. It's all wrinkled" her hands reached over to smooth down the wrinkles.
"Better. " she couldn't help the smirk that curved her lips.
That smirk did not escape his eyes.
Nothing did.
"Perfect appearances don't make you better, it's all in the head" he tapped his temples with his index fingers, a smirk of his own etched on his lips "It's all about strategy, planning, intelligence. There is a reason this game is a battle of wits."
"If your lecture is over then can we pick the sides?" She raised a questioning eyebrow, a mirthful look on her face. He was always a bank of information and speeches now that she had got him to open up to her a little. She had yet to decide if the information overload was a blessing or a curse.
"It's in my job description. Lecturing fools so that they can atleast have a little bit of knowledge they can attempt to use to make their lives and brains better "he scoffed, shaking his head as he remembered the childish antics he had been subjected to in the morning. "I mean...it's good. If you don't want me to do my job then alright, I'll just sit and watch this college turn into a circus." He smirked.
"Really Vardhaan! Stop it. I didn't allow you to rant about your job and your efficiency. I know it very well" A blush coloured her cheeks and he grinned.
"Ofcourse I do it well. If I don't then the evil Dean will lecture me. And if that happens then she will also dock my salary. And when my wife asks me why my salary is so less this month then I'll have to sleep on the couch." Vardhaan mummbled, his back still hurting from the uncomfortable couch he had slept on the night before.
"Interesting. Now if you are done ranting about your life then can we pick the sides? I want black this time." Maya frowned, reaching for the black king.
Too late.
Vardhaan had already grabbed that certain king.
Maya gritted her teeth. "Unfair. Whatever happened to ladies first? You have no manners."
A smirk.
"On the contrary Maya, I am quite the gentleman. White goes first. Therefore, Ladies first Maya" he gave her a patronising smile.
Maya shook her head and began arranging the white pieces.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
He glared into her eyes furiously.
What was going on in that mind of hers?
It infuriated him, not being able to figure her out.
She was like an insanely difficult sudoku puzzle in the morning newspaper. He had to solve it. His entire day would be a waste of mindless thoughts if he didn't.
"There goes your pawn. Again" Maya knocked the black pawn off the board with her bishop.
"It's just a pawn. You have lost a knight and a bishop." Vardhaan moved his rook to the left. "And Check!" he grinned.
"Pawns look small, but they are useful. By the way Vardhaan, that's another piece you have lost. " Maya replaced the black rook with one of her bishops.
"Interesting. Very Interesting Maya. I see you haven't moved your queen yet" Varhaan removed Maya's last bishop with his queen.
"Check!"
"The queen, is the strongest piece in this game. She needs to protect her king." Maya tapped her white king and moved it.
"Let me guess. So the king is nothing? You lose your King and Game over" Vardhan moved his pawn and took out a white rook.
"Wrong. You lose your queen and game over." Maya flicked the black queen off the table with her own "Check mate!" She smirked.
"Impossible." Vardhaan shook his head.
"Face it you lost Vardhaan. You lost to me." Maya taunted.
"You cheated." Vardhaan shook his head. "Engaging me in interesting topics!"
"It's not my fault you can't multitask. You should go. You have a fourth year lecture. Your dream team monkeys will wreak havoc if you are late. I do not want to put anyone in detention today and ruin my victory."
Vardhan sighed. "Did You have to remind me of that day? My brain still hurts thinking of those images."
"You better leave then before you get to see a repeat performance." Maya smiled.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Vardhaan was not happy to see the glorious sight that awaited him.
His fourth year dream team was...
A mess.
Randhir and Sanyukta banging each other into walls.
Jignesh and Yoyo taunting each other in their mother tongues.
Kaustuki trying to pull them apart.
Vidushi being yelled at by Parth.
And poor Sahil looking as lost as Vardhan himself.
Vardhaan made his presence clear with a loud shout.
It had taken a full 4 people to pull Randhir and Sanyukta away from each other.
Yoyo and Jignesh had finally shut up thanks to Kaustuki's warning.
Sahil was looking nervously at the walls, expecting to be punished.
Parth had pushed Vidushi away the minute he had seen the Dean.
"What is going on here? Detention." Maya had roared angrily.
Sahil had sighed and cursed his bad luck. Kaustuki was frowning at Jignesh and Yoyo. Sanyukta and Randhir were glaring at each other.
And Parth had his eyes trained on Vidushi.
Vidushi who was in tears.
Maya had sentenced everyone to cleaning up machines and left Vardhaan to pair them up.
"Alright then you kids. Since you cannot get along I'll have to teach you just like I have to teach you everything else. Pair up. Quickly!"
Sanyukta paired up with Kaustuki, as expected as Randhir paired up with Jignesh.
Vidushi silently moved to Sahil's side, leaving Parth with Yoyo.
"Interesting. Now get to Work!" Vardhaan sat down on his chair, cursing his life. The shame of losing to Maya, the childish behavior of his most intelligent students.
----------------------------
Minutes turned into hours and clean gloves turned greasy.
Vardhaan's cellphone beeped.
Wife: Late again.
He groaned.
He would have to face it from his wife too.
"Alright. That's enough for today. What have we learnt kids?" Vardhaan frowned.
"Not to act like kids." The dream team chorused.
"Good. It's good. See to it that you actually remember and apply what you have learnt." Vardhaan dismissed them.
One person, however, stayed behind.
"What do you want, Vidushi?" Vardhaan frowned at the girl.
"Sir, please allow me to withdraw from the team officially." she requested.
"Did Parth tell you to do this?" Vardhaan took a look at the door.
A pair of eveasdropping eyes and her silence answered the question.
"I'm not letting you withdraw. And the next time someone asks you to withdraw then that person will get his permission to get out from my dream team" Vardhaan declared loudly.
Vidushi nodded.
"Now get out. I have work to do." Vardhaan frowned.
He thought he heard a muffled yelp minutes later.
Vardhaan sighed.
These kids were going to kill him one day.
Another beep from his phone.
Wife: You have 10 minutes.
If his lovely wife did not kill him first.
------------------------------------------------
He was lucky he lived on Campus.
And that his residence was a 5 minute walk.
The lights were on.
She was home, waiting and probably as happy as he was.
"I'm home" he declared wearily, setting himself down on the sofa.
"Hmm...I had a bad day..." She sat down beside him
"Tell me about it. " Vardhaan smirked.
"I am overloaded with responsibilites at work, I have to raise my voice like I am an animal trainer and to top it all, my husband is always late..." she playfully hit his shoulder.
"HA! My boss is the devil, sweetheart. I had to watch over the dream team again." Vardhaan put his arm around his wife
"Devil huh?" she slapped his hand away "Maybe I should live up to that name and ban the dream team again so that you don't spend all your time with them instead of your wife."
"Mrs. Maya Suryavanshi...I'll spend more time with you." Vardhaan chuckled.
"You better. Or else you will be spending a lot of nights on the sofa." Maya mummbled.
He only chuckled as he pulled her into a hug.
"Vardhaan..I'm hungry" she mummbled.
"Let's eat then" he loosened his grip on her and got up.
"I didn't cook" she looked at him with slightly scared eyes.
Was she expecting him to yell at her like Rishi Raichand did? Hit her?
It had been just 6 months.
6 months since she had been free of that monster legally. But he still tormented her in her in dreams.
"We'll go out Maya." he reassured her with a hug.
"Campus pe? The students will glare." Maya frowned.
"Well, then we can yell at them, nothing new. And tommorow is Sunday so most of them will be loitering around. More fun for us." Vardhaan grinned.
"You are wicked." Maya shook her head.
"That's why I can bear you in double role- wife as well as boss!" Vardhaan retorted.
"Alright...you are just a sore loser. You can't handle losing." She smirked, reminding him of the match she had defeated him in earlier.
"Acha? I see. Rematch then. And this time, the king will take the queen." Vardhaan grinned.
"Perhaps your loss has made you lose your logic. The queen is the strongest piece on the chessboard." her eyes narrowed.
She found herself in his arms.
"Who said anything about the chessboard?" the shades of his words made her turn red.
"What are you doing?" She wrapped her arms around his neck so that she did not fall.
"I told you. King takes Queen."
Smirks.
Eyes.
The soft thud of the bedroom door closing.
