mAngalyam tantunAnena !!!!!!!!!!
After reading Priya's Post .. I got inspired to write this post..
Yes.. Mangalya or Mangal sutra used as prop and the concept of using it very lightly ,not knowing the importance of it or just to add mirch masala they are ignoring the importance..

Between Shlok and Ashta :

Once being tied, then pulled, again tied , once about to loose, recently got caught in the rope and broken, he tying again..

Finally NA pulling it off from Anjy...

I cant take this .. drama of using Mangalya as Property itself to spice up the drama ...

The importance of it :

mAngalyam tantunAnena !!!!!!!!!!

One of the most important events of a hindu marriage. The groom ties the mangalasutram, a sacred necklace with the mAngalyam (two gold pendants) around the bride's neck. The sacred necklace symbolizes commitment, safety and security offered to the bride by the groom as he asks her to share in a long and happy married life with him. The groom secures the necklace by tying three knots There is one knot for each aspect of the body--the physical body, the astral essence and the incarnational soul. It also stands for the three aspects of commitment, manasA, vAcA, karmaNa, believing it, saying it and executing it. While groom ties the knots, the high priest chants the DEFINING mantram of a vedic marriage.

|| mAngalyam tantunAnena mama jeevana hEtuna: kanThe badhnAmi SubhagE twam jeeva Sarada: Satam ||

Meaning:

Tying the thali or the mangalsutra around the bride's neck by the groom is one of the most important rituals of a hindu wedding.

While the groom ties three knots, the pundit chants this sloka which means; This is a sacred thread, this is essential for my long life. I tie this around your neck O maiden, having many auspicious attributes, may you live happily for a hundred years with me..

At the time of marriage, the knots were tied using a bunch of cotton threads dipped in turmeric. After the first sixteen days from the day of marriage the yellow threads were replaced by a gold chain, with a golden bridge separating the two pendants. The rest of the necklace is laced with nalla-poosalu, black beads.

We specially invited seven vEda panDits from the school of vEdas at tirumala tirupati dEvasthAnam the abode of Lord venkatEswara swAmy in India. Right after the mAngalya dhAraNa, the pandits chanted "ASeervacanam" the divine vedic mantras to bless the couple on behalf of the assumed 3 crore hindu gods ..

CVS ..Pl stop this cruelty.. and pity on us..

Deepa ..very nice and thanks for revisiting the wonderful and meaningful ritual, the significance of mangalsutra and commitment. In western world too, marriage vows are utters till death do us apart.

I guess in bad marriages where there is lot of abuse the same mangalsutra becomes the noose around the neck also...like in Anjali's case. Respect for the sacred thread has to come from both husband and wife. Astha once tried to remove it...it never came out. She never removed it even during her divorce drama. But now, the significance of it falling down is that while Astha is fighting for truth and dharma and is on other side of the rope, she stands to lose her marriage. But Shlok picked it and tied it, which means he is going to protect the marriage .

Jyoti removed ut after her husband tried to kill her and her baby. That was valid.
And Anjali never removes it herself despite the abuse. NA doesn't respect the thaali enough , which is why he is able to snatch it. But this act in itself gives a lot of freedom to Anjali now.

Agreed..Thaali, and mangalsutra are very important..they are not ordinary ornaments. I do think the EBP team is also using these things to convey the situation of these marriages.

Swathya, thali means mangalsutra in south india. This is tied as Deepa described during our weddings, mainly happens in tamil and telugu weddings where a yellow thread with some gold pendants is tied around the neck. the inscriptions on the pendant varies with the community and usually depicts the SUN/MOON, SHIVA/PARVATI, NARAYANA/LAKSHMI, CONCH/CHAKRA, TULSI LEAVES, OR JUST A CIRCULAR DOT, REP THE SUN ETC. The brides do not remove this till their death or the spouse's death. But nowadays it is common for girls/married women to remove it and wear it only on occassions. Sadly the significance of the thaali is lost among the youth of today. As posted earlier, it serves to act as a kavach or protection from evil eye/spirit and also as a bond that ties together the couple for 7 lives, a constant reminder of the bond and also of the commitments made by the couple to each other and of the blessings of the 33 crore gods and the elders and the pitrus or forefathers.

Hey Mrs. Bond.. being a South Indian our traditions and rituals are different and we are trained to give importance from the day we enter the world even for the minute things..
so regarding marriage when it comes,, Toe ring.. Bangles, Mangalya, Kumkum, Turmeric , Flowers , Saree a piece of jewellery on the neck,, the engagement ring, the anklets the kumkum kept on the maang.. etc.. becomes a part of our daily adornment..
do we will still follow is left to us..
I keep mang me sindoor, during wedding the yellow thread is tied.. on the 16 day the pendant from the thread is removed and transferred to chain.. and we are to wear it compulsorily, the toe ring , the anklets and two glass bangles of green color on both the hands ( I wear only two .. we can wear more say till as dozen too ) , the engagement ring .. Saree on occassaipns..
These symbolise that im married as per hindi ... south indian culture...
mine is cross. From TN to Karnatak.. So I follow both the systems.. so mix..
Hope this is clearified..
