Will Ram Kapoor's entry increase the TRPs of Kyunki...?
A. L. Chougule
fter Gautami Kapoor's entry in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, it's time for one of Ekta Kapoor's blue-eyed boys and Gautami's husband Ram to join the show. In fact, after Gautami replaced Smriti Irani as Tulsi a month ago Ram's entry in Kyunki... was just a matter of time. There was also a lot of speculation about the character he was likely to play in the serial. Ekta unveiled Ram's character, specially designed by Manish Malhotra, at a specially arranged event on the serial's set last Friday. Ram plays a character called J. R. Thakral. Needless to say Thakral is Ekta's conception and creation.
Generation jumps and introduction of new characters is a routine business in all Balaji soaps. But the introduction of J. R. Thakral and the resultant makeover the show will undergo is definitely not a routine thing. For, Thakral is no ordinary character and his entry will cause quite a few ripples in the show and will have bearing on other characters, including Tulsi. Thakral, according to Ekta, is inspired by a combination of comic books and English films characters. "It's a freaky character, something that has not been tried on Indian television so far," she says, adding, "The idea is to break the clutter on TV."
Thakral is a super rich guy who lives with his son and two cats. He is flamboyant, well-travelled and is fully aware of his wealth which he flaunts. "More than men he trusts cats and his favourite colour is green. He is very intelligent and sharp, a kind of person who will not stand in a corner but will get noticed everywhere. It is the reason why he likes cats because cats are very sharp. He likes green colour because green signifies immense possibilities for him. However, his son is completely different from him," says Balaji's chief creative director Nivedita Basu.
No wonder, Ram is completely sold on to the character of Thakral who will make a lot of difference in the serial. "The look is classy and very different and it's a drastic change for me as well. Thakral is an intense, stylish and peculiar man. He interacts with only sharp and intelligent people. And it's quite different from my role in Kasamh Se," he smiles. In fact, he had to lose a few kilos to play the character. "I have already shed six kilos and I will lose a few more for this character," he reveals.
Ask him whether the character is negative and he says it has shades of grey. "Even Jai Walia of Kasamh Se is not a completely positive character. He is a combination of positive and negative shades. Circumstances determine his behaviour. That's how people are in real life. That's how Thakral is, though he is a multi-shade character," he elaborates. Try asking him whether Thakral will have a positive or negative impact on Tulsi's life and he feigns ignorance. "I really don't know," he says looking towards Ekta for an answer.
"Thakral's entry will cause a 180-degree turn in Kyunki's story. Either positively or negatively he will impact every character in the serial," says Ekta. However, his introduction will be on a low key. He will hog minimum screen space to begin with. "We want to establish the character slowly and want viewers to speculate about him. The suspense and curiosity will add to the excitement. Besides we also want to gauge viewer's reaction to the character before Thakral becomes a full blown character," explains Ekta.
Both Ekta and Ram are confident that the character will work well with viewers and boost the serial's TRPs. "He is not an anti-hero but is definitely anti-normal. His cynicism and madness will make him popular," feels Ekta, adding, "The character will definitely add lot of colour to the show and help deliver more TRPs." Looking at Ram she says she will be happy if he gives her an extra 1 TRV. Ram who was indeed Ekta's first choice to play the character is all geared up for the challenge.
