Part 7:
It was almost 20 days since Kalpi had started working for Vihaan. She had enjoyed the challenge and every day she woke looking forward to the day. She could not say that her relation with Vihaan had improved much, but they were able to maintain a working relationship. She discussed his appointments and offers with him on a regular basis, but nothing else. She had learnt her lesson and asked for his approval before finalizing anything.
Vihaan had told her that she was no longer required to come on to the shooting location and she continued working from his house. She had started driving in Mumbai and it gave her the freedom to explore the city during her various appointments.
Her brother had come to India from USA and her dad was much improved. Her brother had taken over the complete responsibility of father's health and left her free to do her work with full dedication. After a long time, her whole family was together and she was really happy
But suddenly yesterday her father had dropped a bombshell saying that he wanted to stay in Delhi while recuperating. Her mom and brother both were supportive of his decision as they both were more familiar with Delhi.
Her dad told her that it was okay if she wanted to leave the job after the end of the month and join them in Delhi. He told her that he had decided to permanently retire from this post and allow Vihaan to hire someone new. He requested Kalpi to continue working with Vihaan till he got a new secretary.
Kalpi was shocked beyond belief and she told her dad that she wanted to continue working with Vihaan till the time she was in India and she requested her dad to ask Vihaan for his permission. She told her dad that she would give Vihaan one month notice so that he could hire someone new.
She was totally tense when she entered Vihaan's bungalow. She was enjoying her job so much and she was sure she did not want to leave. She worried whether Vihaan would allow her to continue working with him.
Vihaan on the other hand could not believe Vitthal uncle would be leaving his employment. He had been with him since his childhood and had guided him completely in his career. He had been his greatest support. He was happy with Kalpana's work, but Vitthal was his guide and mentor. Then Vitthal had gone on to tell him that Kalpana was ready to work with him till she went to USA, but if he wanted she would quit immediately and he could hire someone else on a permanent basis. Vihaan suddenly realized that he did not want Kalpana to quit, not now, not ever. He might not like her personally, but her work was exceptional and he wanted her to continue working with him.
He was totally bewildered about his feelings for Kalpana, how could he dislike someone and still want that person to work for him. Vihaan did not realize that what he felt for Kalpana was very far from dislike.
It was a sense of anti-climax for Kalpi as Vihaan did not bring up the topic of her resignation at all and it left her totally confused.
She was sitting in her office when Vihaan's Naani walked in. She had built up a great relationship with Naani over these days. Kalpi who was always very comfortable with young children and older people got along like a house on fire with Naani.
Naani who was suffering from arthritis was greatly helped by the ayurvedic medicine which Kalpi got for her. It was the same medicine which her mother used when she suffered from arthritis. Kalpi massaged Naani's legs with the oil daily and Naani who felt much better was very grateful.
Kalpi also had fallen totally in love with Naani, as she was young at heart even at this age.
"How are you dear, hope I am not disturbing you", Naani said walking in.
"Naani , you can never disturb me. I was just going through some scripts as I have to give Vihaan feedback about them and I am sure he will disregard everything I say", Kalpi said.
"Why do you say that" Naani asked.
"Your grandson does not like me and he does not like my work either. He is always finding faults in my work and keeps insulting me. I am just waiting for the time he asks me to leave" Kalpi stated matter of factly.
"That is not true. Vihaan told me that you were very good at your work and your organizational skills have made his life pretty smooth", Naani said.
Kalpi felt a strange sense of pride and elation hearing this. "Naani you are not just saying this to pacify me, na. He really did say it", Kalpi tried confirming.
"At this age, I am not going to lie to you. He really told me this".
"Thanks Naani, but he has never once told me this. I wonder why." Kalpi said.
Naani also wondered why and she decided she would talk to her grandson about this.
"How is your dad, Kalpana", Naani asked.
"Naani he is much, much better and dad wants to shift to Delhi for recuperation. They will be leaving for Delhi by the end of this week." Kalpi said.
"So are you going to stay alone in your flat?", Naani asked.
"Ya, I am now comfortable with Mumbai and I don't mind staying alone", Kalpi said.
"No, you are not going to stay alone in your flat. I want you to shift to this house. Anyway you work from here and this house is big enough to fit an army and I would love to have you here" Naani said.
"No, Naani, I can't do that. It is not right and I am sure Vihaan would hate it. Naani, please do not force me" Kalpi said.
"Kalpana, I am not going to take no for an answer. Why should he hate it. This house is huge and you and Vihaan are not going to be in each other's path and anyway it is only this month that Vihaan is in Mumbai for such a long stretch of time. He spends more time out of the country and I get very lonely. I would love for you to be here." Naani said firmly.
"Naani, I don't know what to say, but if you want me to stay, you need to talk to my father and also get Vihaan's approval. I don't want him to think that I am taking advantage of your generosity." Kalpi said, but secretly hoped that Vihaan would refuse as she was very uncomfortable with the thought of being in the same house as him.
Initially when Naani talked to Vitthal, he refused and said that Kalpi would be okay alone, but then Naani asked him, "Don't you trust me to take care of your daughter", Vitthal was speechless. Vitthal who had always considered Naani to be like him his mother could not refuse anymore.
Then Naani went to tackle Vihaan, "Vihaan, I want to talk to you about something" she said.
"What is it Naani, why this formality" Vihaan asked.
"I want Kalpana to move in with us, once her family moves to Delhi", she said.
"What?? Why would you want that," Vihaan shouted.
"I like her very much and I don't want her to stay alone. So I am bringing her here", Naani said.
"But I don't like strangers invading my private space", Vihaan protested.
"First of all she is not a stranger. She is Kalpana a girl who I like very much. Also, have you seen our house. Have you visited more than half the rooms in the house even once in the past one year? How is it your private space, if you have not been there in recent times? Anyway, I was not taking your permission, I was just informing you."
Vihaan gave up grudingly, but in his heart he felt happy losing this battle which surprised him.
Kalpana had moved into Vihaan's house with lot of uncertainties, as she was sure that Naani had forced Vihaan to accept this decision. Vihaan had not told her anything, but his attitude towards her was very cold and it made her feel sad.
Vihaan had a night shoot that day and was still in his bedroom. Naani and Kalpi were in the living room where Kalpi was massaging Naani's feet with medicinal oil.
"Kalpana you have made me feel so much better with this medicine", Naani said.
"I used to do this for my mom and my mom always felt much better. She always used to say that this medicine alongwith my massage is like magic." Kalpana said.
"You know the reason I hate this arthritis is the fact that I cannot cook my favourite Rajasthani food. You know Vihaan's mom was from Rajasthan and Vihaan's dad was a Punjabi. All these chefs here are specialists in International cooking, but they are not very good at Indian food. They make it but somehow the Indianess is missing." Naani said.
"Naani, I love cooking and I can cook Rajasthani food very well. All I would do during vacations would be attend cooking classes and experimenting at home. What would you like to eat, Naani, I will cook it."
"No dear, I am not going to make you cook here."
"Naani you welcomed me into your home and now if you treat me a guest, I would hate it. Please tell me, I am dying to cook"
"Okay, then cook me Dal, Baati, Churma (A Rajasthani speciality is a combination of three different food items - Daal (lentils), Baati and Churma (Sweet)).
"Naani, I love Dal, Baati, Churma. I am so excited to cook it", Kalpi said.
Just then Vihaan walked entered the room and but neither Naani nor Kalpi noticed him. He just stood there listening to their talk. He saw the Kalpana was massaging his Naani's legs and they both were totally engrossed in their conversation. He wondered how Kalpana had gotten so close to Naani so soon. He suddenly realized that Kalpana had a knack of charming everyone. His support team had also started singing her praises and it irritated him a lot.
"You know it is so surprising to see someone so young and ambitious so excited about cooking. You are so Indian in so many ways and now you are going abroad to study. Dear, tell me are you planning to settle down abroad after your studies." Naani asked.
"No way, Naani. I am going to come back as soon as I finish my studies and start working in India. But my final ambition is to start my own business", Kalpana said.
"And what about marriage dear. You are so pretty, I am sure you must be having someone special in your life. Is he ready to wait for you?" Naani asked.
Suddenly Vihaan's ears perked up and he felt an urgent need to hear what she would say.
"Naani, nothing like that. I don't have anyone special in my life. I am just 22 now and I am not thinking about marriage.", Kalpi said
"I hope you don't think I am an nosy old woman. But do you think you will have a love or an arranged marriage", Naani asked.
"I don't think you are nosy old woman and Naani I don't know whether I will have a love or an arranged marriage, but whenever I will marry it will be with an approval of my parents" Kalpi said and suddenly thought about Rohan. She was sure if her relationship with Rohan ever progressed her parents would definitely like him.
Vihaan did not realize that he gave a sigh of relief hearing Kalpana's answer.
Vihaan walked back into his room.
Kalpana went into the kitchen and started cooking. As always she felt the most happy when she was cooking and started enjoying it. She tasted the food and it tasted amazing, if she said so herself.
Vihaan came down for lunch and sat at the dining table where Naani was already seated. The servants were bringing out the food and suddenly Kalpi walked in with the food she had cooked.
Naani said, " I am just dying to taste your food dear.".
"Why is she cooking food here, don't we have cooks to do this", Vihaan asked angrily.
"She is not cooking for you. Your cooks have cooked your continental food for you. This food is specially for me. Kalpana, sit down and join us." Naani said.
Kalpana looking at Vihaan's angry face was hesitant to sit down.
"Sit down, Kalpana."
Kalpi served the food to Naani and cautiously sat down serving herself.
In the meanwhile, the servant served Vihaan his continental food. Vihaan suddenly lost his appetite completely for the food that was served to him. Tantalizing aroma of desi ghee arising from the food served by Kalpana was tickling his taste buds. But his ego would not let him ask for a helping of that food.
"Kalpana, this food is amazing. You transported me to my haveli in Rajasthan. Thank you so much." Naani said.
"Thanks, Naani, I am glad you like it".
Suddenly Naani noticed that Vihaan was just playing with his food in his plate and looking totally grumpy doing it. She smiled to herself and asked the servant to serve Vihaan Kalpana's food.
"Naani, I don't want to eat food laden with ghee, it is totally unhealthy", Vihaan objected half-heartedly.
"If you eat ghee for one day, you are not going to get unhealthy. Just taste it, if you don't like it, don't eat it" Naani said.
The servant served the food and Vihaan tasted a morsel and was transported into food heaven. It reminded me of his childhood spent in Rajasthan and his maternal grandparents house. He could not resist any longer and he started eating with complete relish, keeping his ego completely aside.
"This food is amazing, I love it, Kalpana", words escaped from his mouth unconsiously.
Kalpana felt real happiness hearing this. This was the first compliment she had received from Vihaan and it felt absolutely amazing.
