Chapter2:

Ishita had woken up early that morning, showered and wore the sari that Raman had gifted for VaraLakshmi puja. The white and black netted sari was just perfect on her as it effortlessly fell through all the curves on her body. She neatly plaited her long hair which slithered on her back. The black blouse she wore, studded with white stones along the deep neck line was simply too sexy on her fair back. She wanted to look special for Raman but at the same time wanted to look simple so that her family wouldn't give too much attention to the special care she had taken only for Raman. It was still early given that it was a Sunday and all were asleep. Raman was the first to wake up and came to have his morning tea at the dining table while Ishita was busy with Neelu preparing breakfast in the kitchen for the family.

Ishita was hoping Raman would compliment her or at least question her about wearing such a nice sari that particular morning. She was so conscious about Raman saying something nice that her face felt hot and her cheeks had already turned red as she started blushing and smiling without her knowledge. She felt Raman's strong gaze on her back when she gave him his tea and breakfast and turned to go into the kitchen. She did not have the courage to turn around and catch his gaze as she feared her knees would buckle on her if she caught him ogle at her. But she did steal a few quick glances from the kitchen and to her surprise, nothing like that happened. She saw that he was engrossed in the newspaper and never even looked up at her. Raman did not say a word. True, he sat there longer than any other day, but that might also be because it was a Sunday and he did not have to rush for work. Raman was making her restless.

Why was he not looking at her? It was the sari that he had gifted to her after noticing that Ishita had liked it but did not take it because of the high price. Where was the Raman who was staring at her with his mouth open when she was stitching a hook to her blouse the other morning! She thought even if he did not know that it was her birthday or even if he did not compliment her, he would at least throw a few taunts in the form of his famous one-liners when he saw her in that sari. He would say something like "wah! first you say you don't want expensive gifts and now wear them without any occasion" or "money gone to waste! It would be perfect if you had been a little thinner", just to let her know that he had acknowledged that she wore the sari he gifted her. She knew that his taunts were a way of covering up his true feelings towards her but at the same time she would know that he was happy that she accepted his gift.

But today was different! He did not even look at her let alone comment on her! She knew that she had no right to expect such things from Raman given that they were only friends' explicitly, but even friends complement each other when they look nice, she thought. She walked back and forth a couple of times from the table to the kitchen just to get his attention, but he sat there with his head buried in the newspaper for longer than ever and seemed least interested in his wife to notice the pains she was going through to get one glance from him. It seemed like a long time when Raman finally folded the paper and put it on the table. She wanted to get his attention once again then, but before she could act on it, he left the table and went inside. After a while, he came out all dressed talking on the phone and left without saying a word to Ishita.

Ishita felt a little dejected as she so expectantly got dressed that morning. A smile from Raman would have made this the best birthday she ever celebrated. She would not have minded even if he had taunted her this morning! She wanted to know that he had acknowledged her wearing his gifted sari. But she was not expecting this treatment from Raman. Ishita dwelled on Raman's indifference for a while. She looked at herself in the mirror a few times to check if she still looked as beautiful as she did when she got dressed. After confirming to herself that she looked very beautiful still, she decided that she would not let this spoil her birthday as she still had the whole day ahead of her. Raman was bound to notice her by the end of the day, she thought and cheered herself. She would not change until he said something about the sari to her, she decided!
