Chapter 2
Shiv Raj Shekhar was the first Collector of the newly formed District Bilaria. He had met Anandi, the Village head, Khajaan Singh's daughter by accident. Their first meeting was not so good yet...
Kuch toh baat hai
Yoonhi mulaaqaat nahi hoti
Ajnabee do logon ki
Raahein aise hi toh ek nahi hoti...
Shiv had taken over the post and had begun working from his very first day. He did not want a welcome party or any celebration of that sort. Khajaan Singh and the other Panch came to meet with the new collector. They spoke on matters of the overall development of the village and its residents irrespective of their age, gender, class or religion. Shiv wanted to take a tour of the village so Khajaan Singh accompanied him. Shiv keenly observed the fields, the roads and its conditions, water supply, the hospital, the school, and many other parts of Bilaria. He dictated notes about the observation made to his PA Bheem Singh. After the initial observation Bheem Singh left on his scooter to reach the office before his boss did. He had to make the necessary arrangements for everything Shiv had dictated to him. Shiv and Khajaan Singh took a different route this time to reach the Collector's office so that Shiv could see the residential area of Bilaria.
Shiv heard the voice of little girls reciting a poem. He stopped his jeep in front of that building. "Khajaan Singhji what's this place? You did not include this building in the places to visit." "CS this is a small school run by my daughter and her friends. It is a school for girls whose parents do not want them to go to the village school. They are against female education." Khajaan Singh was definitely embarrassed by the mindset of people who were still against the female development. "Can we have a look at the school maybe we could do something for the school too. Girls make a large number of our population and their development is very necessary for the development of our district and the nation too." Shiv and Khajaan entered the school building. Khajaan went to inform Anandi about Shiv's arrival and Shiv stood near the entrance and glanced around the school. "So what do you think about my school CS?" Shiv did not notice Anandi was standing behind him. He turned to look at her. "It is a good school and you are doing a very good job but the school and the girls do need the basic essentials and more." Shiv was about to continue but Khajaan interrupted him. "CS can I be excused wo I have to go to the fields there is an emergency. Anandi now you don't start worrying about my work too. I will send the car for you."
Khajaan Singh left and Anandi handed the class over to her teaching aide and cousin Gulli. She literally had to push Gulli into the classroom. Gulli who obviously must have been busy ogling at Shiv went to the class reluctantly. Anandi and Shiv sat in the small staff room. "Please continue from where papa had interrupted you." Anandi broke the awkward silence which spread as both of them remembered their first meeting. "Hmm I was saying that the school building definitely needs repairing and some renovation to look more like a school. Also I have seen that girls of different ages are all learning the same things. You should start a proper school system if you want these girls to achieve something. School uniforms, books, other learning aides... Have you applied to the education department for affiliation and recognition? Without that you are running a private tuition center not a school. You will get funds from the government once the school is a little presentable. Till then you should go for private donations. What do you have to say about what I said?" Shiv was very straightforward and honest about his opinion.
"I understand what you are saying. I will not get the school funds from the government till the time the school is not up to a certain standard as far as the private donations go you really think I have not tried it. The women give me the lecture ki ladkiyon ko bada hokar chula chauka sambhalna hai so why do they need to be educated and the men... The men do not want the women to rise above them. They think education will fill the girls' minds with all sorts of things and then they will no longer be under the control of their fathers, brothers or in the future their husbands and sons. Papa has offered to help but I refused. I don't want people to say ameer baap ki beti hai so she could do it. I want to do it independently. I don't want help from anyone." Shiv looked at Anandi and saw a determined fiery spirited girl. He was impressed by her but he did not let her know. He looked around the school. She showed him the different rooms which were for different arts and crafts education. Shiv smiled. "You don't need help from anyone for the basic funds. Everything you need is right here. The girls as I see are talented in various arts and crafts so why don't you set up a stall in the upcoming fair. The money you girls earn can be used for the basic repairing of the school. Phir main aapke saath hoon for the funding from the government. What say?" A bright smile appeared on Anandi's face but then it dimmed a little. "Ye idea mujhe kyun nahi aaya?" "Sometimes you just need a fresh pair of eyes to look at a matter from a different angle. Shiv took leave and Anandi stood there at the main gate of the school building. "Itne bhi KK nahi hain CS."
A couple of weeks days passed since Anandi and Shiv met at the school. They did run into each other or had to meet for the girls' stall at the fair, some meetings were pleasant and some well they were at loggerheads. Less than a week's time was left before the fair would officially be inaugurated and be open to all. Khajaan Singh hadn't being keeping well. Shiv needed to speak with him on an urgent matter. He came to Khajaan Singh's home and stopped near the main door. He saw Anandi in a hurry and she was running down the stairs. She almost slipped but composed herself. "Anandi dekhkar..." Bhago almost screamed on seeing that Anandi could have fallen but then she hesitated to scold her more. Anandi came down the stairs slowly and took a few steps to reach where Bhago was standing. "Ma ruk kyun gayi aur daatiye na. Uff ma you have begun crying again hai na? Ma there will be a day when you will not hesitate after saying dekhkar... Ma there will be a day when I will see everything and that day if I run carelessly I want you to scold me. Ma look at me please...There will be a day when I will see all the colors... the flowers... the rainbow... everything nature has created... I will see one day ma... I know I will... My future husband will make sure of it. Haan that day I will also see the wrinkled yet beautiful face that papa is fida over." Anandi hugged her mother and wiped her tears. "I don't have wrinkles on my face." "Haan ma abhi toh aap jawaan hai..." "Chal pagal kuch bhi bolti hai. Come on get going you are getting late. I will send your lunch to the school poora kha lena." "Okay ma bye." Bhago turned to go towards the bedroom to tend to her husband and Anandi ran towards the main door.
"Ouch!" Anandi once again banged into someone. "Sorry...wo..." "CS, why does he always come in my way?" Anandi mumbled. "Jee you said something?" "No wo I was just wondering that recently I have begun to fall a lot and mostly when you are around..." "I am sorry you fall because of me..." "Arre nahi but you never let me hit the ground then why are you saying sorry..." "I'll always be to catch you whenever you fall..." "Jee you said something?" "No... I said I am here to meet your father..." "Oh up the stairs first room to the right..." Anandi moved out of the main door and Shiv stood there looking at her. Shiv remembered his first meeting with Anandi and also the words he had spoken to her Face par ye aankhein sirf kajal lagaane ke liye nahi hain dekhne ke liye bhi hain use them. You should watch where you are going'. "How could I have said those things to her? Without knowing her without knowing the truth about her without knowing that she can't see... How could I? Anjaane mein hi sahi I had hurt her... I now remember that her expressions had changed for a fraction of a second on that day when I scolded her. How could I be so heartless? Heartless, yes Shiv you are heartless. Have you forgotten that you don't have a heart you lost it long ago?" Shiv closed his eyes and a tear drop escaped his eyes. He opened his eyes and took the tear drop on his index finger. "Jo aankhen kabhi mere ghum ke liye nahi royi wo Anandi ka dard jaankar kyun num ho gayi?"
At 10 pm Shiv entered the Circuit house in Bilaria which was the house he lived in. Shiv used to work till late every day. He liked to be submerged in work. His work was his life. "Madhav kaka, why haven't you gone to bed? Why do you wait up for me? Maine kaha hai na don't worry for me." Shiv's care taker Madhav went to the kitchen to heat the food and began to set the table. Shiv came after freshening up. "Kaka I can heat the food on my own. Meri fikar mat kiya kijiye." "How can I not worry for you beta? I have cared for you since the day you were brought home from the hospital. Mm ek cheez ho sakti hai I will stop worrying for you the day you get a wife who will worry for you. Bas tumhaari saari responsibility bahu ko dekar I will retire and relax all the time." Madhav served food to Shiv. "Kaka why do you want to spoil a girl's life? Mere paas hai kya jo main use doonga. Iss andhere ke siva main kisi ko kuch nahi de sakta." Madhav smiled and caressed Shiv's hair. "Dekh lena one day a girl will come into your life and bring lots of happiness with her. Tumhaari zindagi khushiyon se roshan kar degi."
The door bell rang. Madhav smiled. "Dekho Shiv baba I said a girl will come into your life and just then the bell rang ab toh ye baat sach hokar hi rahegi." "Madhav kaka open the door and ye superstitious baatein mere saamne mat kiya kijiye." Madhav opened the door and saw a pretty girl with a bright smile which could light up the darkest of all rooms. "Namaste I am Anandi. CS hain?" Mahdav brought Anandi in to the living room where Shiv was catching up on the news highlights. "Anandi what are you doing here at this hour?" "Wo CS I have brought a gift for you. You gave us such a bright idea for collecting funds for the school toh maine socha I should get you this gift." Anandi handed over a gift packet to Shiv even after he declined to accept it. Shiv opened the gift packet and in it were diyas. "CS these diyas are made by the girls I hope when you light them in your house they will light up not only the house but also your life." Anandi beamed with joy as she did something nice for the man who helped her and the girls of her school. "I told you once that you did not need to get me anything. I am happy the way I am I do not need your diyas nor the light they will give. You should sell these at the fair and get some extra money instead of distributing them for free. Here I will pay you some money for it." Shiv removed his wallet from his pocket but Anandi took the gift packet back from him. She was hurt by his behavior. "Gift ki keemat nahi lagayi jaati CS but shayad aap jaise KK insaan ko ye samajh mein nahi aayega. Good night."
Anandi left from Shiv's house but Madhav followed her as per Shiv's instructions. "Anandi bitiya suniye... Main aapko ghar tak chod deta hoon wo Shiv baba said that I should not let you go alone." "Kaka I don't understand your Shiv baba. You saw na he was so rude to me and now he sent you to make sure I reach home safely. Kaise hain CS? I just got him some diyas and uske liye itna gussa. I just wanted to bring some light some happiness in his life. Kya galat kiya maine?" "You have done nothing wrong beta. Nariyal jaise hain Shiv baba. He is tough on the outside but gentle on the inside. Bitiya Shiv baba does not light diyas in the house so he did not take them. Unki baat ka bura mat maano." "Kaka I don't mean to pry but could you tell me more about him... I mean no person is born with this kind of personality something must have happened in his life... If you don't mind can you tell me... Why is he the way he is? Bhagwaanji se itni naraazgi kyun? Why does he not want light and happiness in his life?" Madhav sighed. "It's a long story beta." "I have plenty of time kaka." Anandi heard the bells ring. "Kaka we are near the temple chaliye hum aapke Shiv baba ke naam se inn diyon ko temple mein light karte hain." Anandi and Madhav went inside the temple. They began lighting the diyas. All the diyas were lit. Anandi smiled, "Kaka dekhiye ga we have lit diyas in the temple for CS na ab unki life mein bhi there will be light. Kaka will you tell me about him?"
Anandi and Madhav sat on the stairs of the temple. "Shiv baba was not always like this. He was a very happy child. He loved all sorts of sports and he excelled at each and everything. He was very active and had many friends. No matter how bad a person's mood would be Shiv baba would be able to make them smile. He believed and prayed to God for the happiness he had received. He was the best runner in his school and maybe that's why it has become his fate to run... He has been running away from his past but he can never escape it as he always carries it around. He was 7 years old when he lost his parents and baby sister in the Mumbai riots of 1993. They had gone to Mumbai for his admission in a boarding school. He too was supposed to go with them but could not as he had his tests..." Anandi felt a lump in her throat. She swallowed. "CS blames himself for the deaths of his parents and sister doesn't he?" "Yes he has been living with the guilt of their deaths all his life. God took them away from him so he has stopped believing in God. He does not go to the temple nor does he have a temple in his house. He was rude to you, that is what you think right? Beta he is like that with everyone. He is scared of getting attached to anyone or anything. He does not even live in one place for more than a year. He is afraid of living his life... he is afraid of being happy... he is afraid of loving... He is just a scared little boy on the inside..."
Anandi felt connected to Shiv and his pain. There was something about him that was very familiar. It was like she had known him for years. Madhav dropped her at her home and then returned to the circuit house. When he entered the house he smiled. He picked up a diya which was on the dining table. It was one of the diyas that Anandi had brought as a gift for Shiv. He saw that it had a crack on it. It was glued together. He recalled that a couple of diyas had fallen when Anandi took them back from Shiv. He had picked one and given to her the other he must have missed. Madhav got some paint from the garage and covered the crack with a beautiful design. "Jaise tumne ye diya joda hai baba Anandi bitiya tumhaara toota dil jodegi. The way I have colored the diya she will color your life. I don't know why but I have this strong gut feeling that she is the one who will change your life for the better." He went to the kitchen and opened a drawer. In it was an idol of Shiv Parvati. Madhav placed the diya before them and seek blessings. He went to sleep. Shiv in his room stood in front of the mirror. He looked at himself and could not recognize the image he was seeing. It was not him. Someone else was trying to overcome him. He turned away. "There is a fault in your stars. I will never let you come to life ever again. I will never let you love. Everyone you love is taken away... I will never let anyone die because of you... Never. You are cursed and she must be protected from the curse and you. You do not have the right to be happy. You do not have the right to love Shiv." Shiv came out to the dining table and touched the place where he had left the diya. "Door raho mujhse Anandi... Stay away from me... Why do you affect me? Why do I let you affect me? No one in so many years been able to touch that organ called heart inside of me... How did you reach there? How did you ignite a fire a spark in there? How did you get it to beat again? I will not let you be a victim of my cursed self... I can live without you but I cannot live with the guilt of your loved ones losing you... I will never let you come close to me NEVER... Main khud ko tumhaare kareeb aane se toh rok nahi sakta hoon but main tumhe rok sakta hoon. I will be so mean to you that you will never want to see my face. I will stay away from you and I know ki ye do din you will need me the most for the preparations of the fair I will not be available. I will not meet you."
The next morning Shiv woke up really early. He searched for Madhav but did not find him in the house. He went out to the porch and saw Madhav there. "Kaka breakfast dijiye I am getting late!" Madhav did not reply. He went inside the house and set the breakfast on the table. Shiv praised the breakfast but got silent treatment form Madhav. "Kaka what's wrong?" "I will speak with you only after you say sorry to Anandi bitiya. Don't you think you were a bit too rude to her? I know beta ki tum nahi chahte uss se koi rishta banana but beta you should be cordial at least. Apologize to her before you come back home nahi toh I will leave and go back to Udaipur." Shiv smiled but then he wiped it off before Madhav could see it. "I am off to Udaipur mere saath hi chaliye." "That means you will not apologize to her?" "I will once I meet her on returning to Bilaria. I will but aaj possible nahi hai I am going to Udaipur it's my best friend's birthday." Shiv left for Udaipur. "Gulli Gulli Gulli!!! Relax! Take a deep breath. Alright now tell me what the problem is? What there isn't one? Gulli I am going to Udaipur for a day. I am not going to settle there. I will be back by night. We still have two days before the fair. Everything will be alright. Please take care of everything my absence." "Jiji wish your boyfriend a very happy birthday from my side." "I will. Chal bye." Anandi too was on her way to Udaipur.
