Rani Mukerji really was the
rani (queen) of Bollywood at one point. She started with a bang in the 90s itself, with KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI being a huge Blockbuster that is considered a classic by many even today. Her song with Aamir "Aati kya khandala" was also a hugely popular song that is also remembered even today by many.
2002 onwards, starting from SAATHIYA, she was unbeatable. CHALTE CHALTE, HUM TUM, VEER ZAARA, BLACK, BUNTY AUR BABLI, KABHI ALVIDA NA KEHNA...she was simply on fire, delivering one box office success after another, one hugely appreciated acting performance after another! The appreciation the public showed towards Rani was quite clear!
However, what tends to happen unfortunately for female actors is that their career-span tends to be shorter than that of male actors. With Bollywood being a male-dominated industry, a female actor's career can quickly start to fall apart, especially after marriage or when age starts to catch up.
Rani has not had a good run in recent years. There is no doubt about that. She tried to make a career-comeback in 2009 with DIL BOLE HADIPPA, but the film didn't work at the box office. She did have a box office Hit in 2011 with NO ONE KILLED JESSICA, but then she again disappeared until her flop film AIYYA released. TALAASH did reasonably well at the box office, but that was mainly considered an Aamir Khan starrer, and even for his standards, the film under-performed badly at the box office. After that, not many would probably even remember that she was in the film BOMBAY TALKIES, a film which didn't hold much appeal for majority of the audience anyway.
MARDAANI may be Rani Mukerji's last chance at success in Bollywood. If the film does well, she has the opportunity to do more of such similar roles and even other roles. If the film fails, then it seems as if she will be finished!
MARDAANI has a lot of potential. The theatrical trailer received appreciation. Rani Mukerji's fans would be wanting to see her again on-screen. Rani being married won't have any bad influence on the male audience's decision to watch the film, especially given the fact that Rani's role in the film lacks glamor anyway. Therefore, with positive word of mouth, the male audience would also come to see the film. It looks like a hard-hitting film that people would like.
There are obstacles though that the film faces. The first problem is a similar problem that Akshay Kumar's ENTERTAINMENT had: lack of proper release date. ENTERTAINMENT was sandwiched between KICK and SINGHAM RETURNS, while MARDAANI is sandwiched by SINGHAM RETURNS (which is going strong at the box office) and MR.NATARWAL, a film that masses would rather see than MARDAANI.
To make matters worse for MARDAANI is the fact in the film, Rani plays a cop. Nothing wrong with that in itself, but the problem is that in the recently-released SINGHAM RETURNS, Ajay Devgan was also seen playing a cop. The audience came out in hordes to see SINGHAM RETURNS (especially with a film of such fitting theme coming on Independence Day), and for Rani to play a cop just a week later will definitely reduce the interest of the audience in seeing MARDAANI. The audience wouldn't want to see another cop film, especially when the cop role is being portrayed by an actress. SINGHAM RETURNS is a Rohit Shetty entertainer that masses like to see, whereas MARDAANI is a very dark film that the public would have much less interest about.
Another problem for the film is that the film has gotten an "A" certificate (Adults only). This is the first film of Yash Raj films to get the "A" certificate. Family audience will not be able to see the film, and when the family audience isn't on board, the potential for box office success gets reduced.
NO ONE KILLED JESSICA also had an "A" certificate and went on to become a box office Hit, but that film also had Vidya Balan in it, whereas MARDAANI only has Rani Mukerji in it alone, which makes it harder to pull in the audience. The film will need KAHAANI and QUEEN type excellent WOM to pull in the audience in huge numbers.
On Friday morning when the film releases, the film will open to near-empty houses, especially at single screens theatres of mass-dominated areas where the opening will be simply pathetic. Multiplexes will open a bit better, but it will still be a poor opening. The film should gather a bit of momentum throughout the opening day though with positive Word of Mouth. The film may not show much growth over the weekend because the family audience will not be watching the film. Young adults will be the film's main target audience due to the "A" certificate and the growth can only be there if they spread good Word of Mouth publicity about the film, which I think will happen.
The film may sustain well on weekdays because I am sure the film will have positive WOM, but even with the film sustaining it will be on the lower side as Ajay Devgan's SINGHAM RETURNS will still be running in theatres. Also, Emraan Hashmi's RAJA NATWARLAL releases next week, so the 8th day business of MARDAANI (second Friday) will see a drop in collections.
The multiplex audience will like MARDAANI. Critics will like the film too. Rani Mukerji's performance will receive huge appreciation by everyone who sees the film. It won't be the content of the film that will play spoilsport at the box office...it will be the obstacles (already mentioned) that will play spoilsport!
My Box Office Predictions for MARDAANI:
Opening Day: 1.5 crores
Opening Weekend: 8 crores
Lifetime Collections: 15+ crores
Overall Box Office Verdict: Flop
