Shahrukh Khan selected for top French cultural award

New Delhi, June 19: After superstar Amitabh Bachchan, it is now the turn of another superstar, Shahrukh Khan, to be honoured by the French Government.

Shahrukh Khan has been selected for France's top cultural award, Officier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters), a French Embassy press release said here today.

The award is in recognition of his exceptional career as well as his contribution to the development of Indo-French cooperation in cinema.

It puts Shahrukh Khan, whose recent film 'Don' was partially shot in Paris, in an illustrious club of actors that include Leonardo DiCaprio, Bruce Willis, Sharon Stone, Uma Thurman, Meryl Streep and Robert Redford.

In January this year, the French Government bestowed its highest civilian award, Legion d'Honneur, on Amitabh Bachchan for his contribution to Indian and international cultural life.

Describing Shahrukh as an actor of great talent and unmatched popularity, French Ambassador Dominique Girard said: ''The award also stands testimony to our gratitude to Mr Shahrukh Khan for his cooperation with the French cinema industry at a time when we are determined to further deepen the Indo-French collaboration in this field.'' The date for the award-presentation ceremony has not been decided yet.

Ordre des Arts et des Lettres is given to citizens of France and also foreign nationals who have made significant contributions to arts and literature and to the development of culture and cultural understanding in France and throughout the world.

Previous winners from India include author Mahasweta Devi and artist S H Raza.

New Delhi, June 19: Actor Shahrukh Khan has been chosen by the French Government for the award of Officier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters).

The award is in recognition of his exceptional career as well as his contribution to the development of Indo-French cooperation in cinema, a French Embassy release said here today.

Last year, the French Government had selected superstar Amitabh Bachchan for its highest civilian award, Legion of Honour.

Since 1957, the honour has been bestowed on sevaral famous personalities such as author Mahasweta Devi, artist S.H Raza and Hollywood actors Bruce Willis and Uma Thurman.

The French government has bestowed the award of Officier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters), on superstar, Mr Shah Rukh Khan. The award is a recognition of his exceptional career as well as his contribution to the development of Indo-French cooperation in the field of cinema .

Speaking on this occasion the French Ambassador, H.E Mr Dominique GIRARD said, " It is a great pleasure for me to announce that the French Government has bestowed the honour of the Officier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres on Mr. Shah Rukh Khan, an actor of great talent and unmatched popularity.The conferring of this award also stands testimony to our gratitude to Mr. Shah Rukh Khan for his cooperation with the French cinema industry at a time when we are determined to further deepen the Indo-French collaboration in this field. ". The award will be conferred on the legendary actor at a later date .

The French government confers several distinctions amongst which the Order of the Arts and Litterature was established on May 2, 1957 by the Ministry of Culture. The French government gives this Award to "persons who have distinguished themselves by their creativity in the field of art, culture and literature or for their contribution to the influence of the arts in France and throughout the world".

Some famous personalities who have been awarded this honour include Bruce Willis and Uma Thurman. In India, the renowned artist S.H Raza and noted author Mahasweta Devi are some of the famous Indian personalities who have been bestowed this honour.
