Hello Friends,
It's Retro Caf time again !
This time we have a special episode on Retro. This time we will listen to the musical genres –Ghazals and Sufi music, instead of Bollywood music. These two genres have transcended all boundaries and have each created a special niche for itself in South Asian musical world.
Sufi music is that music that connects with the heart. It is the music of submission and surrender that bonds humans to God and transcends all religious boundaries. Not bound by any particular religious belief, Sufism is a philosophy that glorifies every religion as the path to righteousness. It gives precedence to love for humanity above everything else. Sufi music originally from the 14th century is staging a resounding comeback. It's acquiring a steady fan following much like the rock genre of the 60's. Singers like the late Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Abida Parveen from Pakistan, Indian Shubha Mudgal, Mohammed El-Sheikh Juma of Sudan, Roomi of Iran, Whirling Dervishes of Turkey, Baul singers from Bangladesh or even pop groups like Junoon have all contributed in re-vitalizing this unique religious singing.
The Ghazal was originally a form of poetry, but with time it has come to be known as a form of 'Gayaki' with a specialized rendering which has created its own place in the music field. Poetry holds prime position in this form. The words create a magic and the singer casts a spell over the listener. Every couplet becomes an experience. There is an element of surprise and wonder; that is how, people burst into 'wah-wahs' at the completion of each couplet. Ghazals have crossed boundaries from one country to another and have found place in all music lovers' heart.
