Many a times the question that arises in the mind of an Indian is - why are we secular? This question becomes more demanding for an answer when we feel the heat of communal conflagrations. India being still a traditional society that contains not one, but many traditions owing their origin in part to the different religions that exist here. While India carries with it many traditions it has managed to retain the secular character of its polity, while in many countries especially from the third world, a secular authority has crumbled in face of conflicting traditions. Lebanon and Cyprus are only two instances. Even in those countries where a single tradition holds sway, secular forces have not always been able to hold their own against the forces of tradition.

So is India Secular because the majority of its Population is Hindu???

Is there a connection between Hindu tolerance and Secularism??

Cheers,
Raksha

wel turkey is another country which proclaims itself as secular n i think its predominantly muslim.

but yes 2 an extent i agree v r still secular as the hindu majority is quite tolerant. due during parition moammad ali jinnah said pakistan will a secular country but in the yrs tht followed it changed its stance.

1 thing is 4 sure. all those politicians who say they r secular will change their colors if the voting rgts of the minorities r scrapped. i doubt tht they will say tht they will fight 4 the minorty who r no more a vote bank.

you hit the nail on the head. I agree with you. India is secular only because of the vested interests of vote-bank politicians.

Come to think of it, are we really secular or just plain old pseudo-secular? If we were truely secular, we wouldn't be catering to all minorities at the cost of hindu majority😊

If Muslims & Christians are minorities in Maharashtra, UP, Bihar etc., are Hindus not minorities in J&K, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya etc? Why are Hindus denied minority rights in these states? 😳

When uniform is made compulsory for school children, why there is no Uniform Civil Code for citizens?

Abdul Rehman Antuley was made a trustee of the famous Siddhi Vinayak Temple in Prabhadevi, Mumbai ….Can a Hindu - say Mulayam or Laloo – ever become a trustee of a Masjid or Madrasa?

Why Sanskrit is communal and other is secular? Mandir is Communal and other is Secular, Sadhu is Communal and other is secular??

To me, each and every religion is first a way of life and then becomes a religion when a section of masses start following it. Chalo, hinduism way of life hee hai...... toh kya uss raastey mein bhi rodey atkayengey yeh so called "secular" politicians???

India is secular because of hindus... Even in a country like the US I want to see muslims have the freedom of doing namaz in the streets... with all that first amendment.. Hindus are tolerant and thats not cause they are scared to be the "brat" but more because as a whole they are at peace with the veri mystical and deep teachings of hinduism which tend to make us more agreeable to differences...In fact in any country where muslims are in minority may not have a say. China, Russia, and many other european nations have muslims in minority but I dont think they have slogans of brotherhood "muslim, jews, isai, milke rahe sab bhai bhai..."...etc... 😆 Yugoslavia is a clear example of what happens in such situations...

I don't know about India being secular because of Hindus. Like you said with so many differnt traditions how can we be secular? But truth be told, I am glad that we are secular. Because in case of any crisis, a secular country can make decisions without bias. Who knows if India wasn't secular where we would be today? Would all the other relgions except Hinduisim be accepted or what about the atheists? Yes, we are truely not compleletely secular. But I think Indian govt. has good stance as to where religion stands in law.

To be secular and to claim secular is different.
Today it is costing us too much. Our own states have Hindus as minority just for the sake of cashing vote banks. It is good to be secular as per our mythology too, all religions are equal. But law and order should not be inspired by religion. Make the rules that are for the betterment for the country as whole. bottom line of law and order should be upliftment of the country and the countrymen and not for the religion itself. Religion should flourish in our home, heart, culture and places o worship.
