A rasa (lit. 'juice' or 'essence') denotes an essential mental state and is the dominant emotional theme of a work of art or the primary feeling that is evoked in the person that views, reads or hears such a work. (From Wikipedia)
There are nine rasas called Navras.
- Srangaram: Love, Attractiveness
- Hasyam: Laughter, Mirth, Comedy
- Raudram: Fury
- Karunyam: Compassion, Tragedy
- Bibhatsam: Disgust, Aversion
- Bhayanakam: Horror, Terror
- Viram: Heroic mood
- Adbhutam: Wonder, Amazement
- Shantam: Peace, Tranquillity.

Why am I telling you all this?
Last Saturday I wanted to write something, anything - an OS or first chapter of my next story, anything. This post was to be posted on Saturday but for some reasons I could not post it till today. So, I wanted to start something new, but neither did I have any compelling idea for an OS nor I have finished preliminary work for my next story to get it started. Then I remembered the Navrasas. My knowledge of them is very limited (limited to the Wikipedia article) and I know that they are expressed in all of the Indian classical dance styles (Any readers who are classical dancers would know a lot more about them). So, coming back to the point, I have decided to do a series of written works based on the navrasas. Each piece will feature one ras and it will be mostly a one shot, but it can be just a scene, a three-shot or in rare case even an SS. I take it as a challenge to myself, as there are several rasas that have been part of my stories and there are some that I have never touched. Plus, they are open to interpretations. One person's Bhyanakam can be another's Viram or not. A ras can be just what it means literally or it can have a broader meaning. As I said my knowledge is limited in this area and so I will learn and understand on the go. Let's see how far I go.
As some of you may know, I write stories with Asad and Zoya as main characters and other QH season 1 characters as supporting characters and that will be the case here, too.
So, which one is going to be the first rasa? Srangaram? I am not sure if there is any inherent meaning in the order used above. I will have to research. And, I will pick one and it may not be in the order.
If you find the idea interesting, stay tuned!
Thanks for reading.
