Chapter 9

After pag phere ritual, Shlok had refused his parents to accept any more invitations. Some of his old college friends and his relatives wished to invite them for dinner or throw them a party in the honour of their marriage but every time Shlok made some excuse. They were already pretending to be a perfectly normal couple in front of his family to give them the false assurity that everything was resolved between them. However, behind the closed doors, in the room, they would start their verbal war again. He didn't want to fake their relationship in front of anyone else. Astha too shared the same sentiments on this matter for once.

After their wedding night, Shlok and Astha didn't argue over sleeping arrangements again. There was now an unspoken agreement established between them. Even though Shlok faced little discomfort by sleeping on the sofa, he refrained from voicing it as he knew Astha would rather prefer to sleep on the sofa than share the bed with him. No matter how much they argued and annoyed each other, somewhere deep down Shlok still cared for Astha. He didn't like the idea of putting himself at ease at the cost of her discomfort. We were once friends after all..that's the least I should do...that was his justification for his every act of kindness towards Astha.

However, he still never left an opportunity to annoy her or gain the upper-hand over her. Like one morning, Shlok woke up to find Astha coming out of the washroom in her sleeping dress and walking towards the cupboard. Clearly she came out to find something because she hadn't taken a shower yet. It was now their daily routine that Astha would wake up early in the morning, finish taking shower, get changed and leave the room before Shlok would wake up. But, this particular morning, he woke up unexpectedly earlier than usual. He was about to go back to sleep when a thought flashed across his mind. Watching her make her way towards the washroom with a towel in her hand, he quickly got up and ran towards the washroom and before she could react properly, he had bolted the door from inside. She could do nothing but watch him with her mouth open, feeling infuriated at his act. "how childish!" she said furiously. Now she had no choice but to wait for him to come out and what's more, she couldn't even leave the room as she was still wearing her sleeping dress. She was pacing up and down the room still fuming with arms folded across her chest and the towel still dangling over her arm. She heard the shower faucet being turned off. She was waiting for this very moment...her moment to get back at him. As expected, mere seconds had passed when she heard the door's lock being opened. Shlok's head popped out from behind the door.

"Astha pass me the towel. There's no towel here."

"Oh really? Because I remember coming out of the washroom just so I can get a towel before someone rudely..."

"Get over it Astha. Or at least can we argue over it later. I am waiting for a towel here." Shlok interrupted, starting to sound irritated.

"Well, keep waiting because I am not handing you the towel. If you want it then come out and get it yourself." Astha said stubbornly.

"Astha!" he gritted his teeth feeling in anger. "you better hand me the towel or I will come out without wearing the clothes." he threatened.

"Ok do as you wish." Astha knew he was just bluffing. Still all her senses became alert. She moved away from the door looking at it warily.

But as she expected he simply closed the door. Astha sighed in relief and walked towards the cupboard to pick out another towel, which she threw on the bed. She was standing looking out of the window when she heard the door of the washroom being opened. She turned around only to stumble back in shock. Shlok was standing just a few feet distance away dressed only in his trousers while flaunting his naked chest proudly. He was rubbing his wet hair with the towel with his well-toned arms. Astha couldn't help gawping at him. She was in awe of his hard, lean frame. She never realised he had such a well-toned body. As this thought crossed her mind, a darker crimson colour tinted her already flaming cheeks. She tore her eyes away from him feeling embarrassed and annoyed at the same time. Thank heavens he is trying to ignore my presence or else my treacherous body would have given me away. But is he mad to come out of washroom half-naked? Hasn't he got no modesty?

As she was thinking that, she saw his eyes fall on her. Oh my gosh he saw me blushing. I got to get out of here. She almost ran towards the washroom with the towel in her hand. Meanwhile, Shlok was left wondering about her yet again peculiar behaviour. What's up with her?

Often Shlok was the one to provoke her. He would deliberately create a situation to his advantage where she would have to bow down in front of him. However, he was rarely successful in his intentions. For instance, this one time, Shlok was getting ready to go out when while buttoning his shirt, one of its buttons came off. Just at that very moment Astha walked into the room.

"Astha, one of its buttons fell off. Can you sew it?" he said while pointing towards his shirt.

"Ok I will. Leave that shirt on the bed."

She was about to leave the room when Shlok called her.

"Where are you going? I need that shirt now."

"Now?" she sighed. "Why don't you pick out another shirt?"

"Because I don't want to wear another shirt. I just want to wear this shirt." he said sounding stubborn.

Astha rolled her eyes. She knew he was deliberately being difficult. "Ok. take off the shirt then." she said while walking towards the dressing table to find thread and a needle in its drawer.

"Why? Can't you sew it while I'm wearing the shirt? You know like you see in the shows and movies." he said raising an eyebrow, his eyes twinkling with humour and the slightest suggestion of a smile playing at the corners of his mouth.

Astha looked at him, perplexed at his bizarre and inane demand. "But this isn't some show or a movie, is it?" Then she sighed in exasperation and said "Come on Shlok, don't be unreasonable. I don't have all day. Do you want this button sewed or not?"

"Ok don't do it then. I will ask aayi or jyoti to sew it." he shrugged and was about to walk out of the room when Astha reluctantly stopped him.

"There is no need for that. I will do it." she said, her eyes flashing with anger.

She put the thread in the needle and gave him a stern glare, which made him smile. He was enjoying her reaction.

Astha realised she had to stand very close to him to sew his button, thus she was a little hesitant in the first place. She gathered her courage and started to sew his button, all the while feeling his eyes on herself. Suddenly an idea struck her. While sewing the button she poked him with the needle deliberately a few times. The smile on his face, which was there minutes before, was soon replaced by a grimace. Every time she would poke, he would yell and shout at her to be careful.

"Sorry Shlok. You see I am a little clumsy with thread and needle. That's why I was asking you to take off the shirt." she would say acting innocently.

This went on for few moments before he gave up. "Stop Astha! I can't bear the pain anymore. Here take the shirt...or better yet, just ask aayi or Jyoti to sew the button on. A person like you shouldn't even be allowed near the needle." he frowned while taking off the shirt. He went towards the cupboard, took out another shirt and went to the washroom with it. Astha , who was barely holding her laughter seeing his reaction to her needle poking, roared with laughter.

Shlok and Astha were in their bedroom, absorbed in different activities. Astha was sitting on the sofa with a newspaper on her lap and a pen in her hand. From time to time she would put crosses or circles on the newspaper with the pen. Shlok, on the other hand, was lying on the bed, playing games on his phone. A soft soothing melody was playing in the background. For the first time since their marriage, they managed to abstain from arguing while being alone in the same room.

Out of nowhere, a shrill, high-pitched sound of Shlok's ringtone penetrated the calm and serene atmosphere of the room, startling both out of their reverie. He instantly sat up while looking at the screen of his phone, a pleasant smile appearing on his face. Astha watched him curiously from across the room, wondering who could be the caller.

"Hey what a pleasant surprise Swati! How are you?"

Even though Astha was not familiar with Swati's name, her womanly instincts clued her who this particular 'friend' might be. As soon as the realisation dawned on her, she felt deeply perturbed.

Shlok was busy chatting to Swati when a quick casual glance towards Astha distracted him from his conversation with her. She looked visibly upset and disturbed. Feeling puzzled, he stared at her. Their eyes met for a moment before Astha lowered her eyes, pretending to ignore him as usual and tried to focus her attention back to her newspaper.

Could it be because of Swati's phone call? he suspected. This thought brought a smile on his face. How could he let this golden opportunity go to infuriate her?

He turned on the speaker of the phone. "What a coincidence Swati. I was just thinking of you now when you called. It's been so long since I have heard your beautiful voice." he said flirting with her. Astha was sitting motionless, still with her head bowed but clearly all her senses were focused on their conversation.

Swati laughed. "Did you? I thought you forgot me after you went home. It's been nearly two weeks and you didn't even call once"

"No yaar. How can I forget you? In fact you are the one I missed the most. And sorry about not calling. I was just caught up with some family issues."

"Oh really? Anything serious?"

"Oh no don't worry. Just some unpleasant incidences took place but I'm managing everything well now."

He said this intentionally in the hopes to bring out some visible reaction from Astha. And he wasn't disappointed. At his words, Astha jerked her head up and glanced at him with hurtful look, much to Shlok's surprise, who expected her to feel enraged instead of hurt.

Before he could think further, Swati spoke. "Well Shlok do you know what today is?"

"Today? Is there anything special today?" Shlok asked feeling distracted but his curiosity got the better of him.

"Yes. Don't you remember?"

"No I don't."

"Oho Shlok, it's my birthday today. I was waiting for you to call me and wish me but I was disappointed you didn't. You never forget my birthday."

"Oh my gosh! How did I forget your birthday? Guess there's so much going on in my life, it just completely slipped out o my mind. Anyways, happy birthday dear!"

"Thanks Shlok. But what do you mean by there is so much going on in your life."

For the second time Astha lifted her head to look at him. Will he tell her about our marriage?

Shlok too looked at her and hesitated for a second. "Oh nothing Swati. I will tell you when I will see you in person. But forget that. You tell me what would you like for a present."

Swati chuckled. "Nothing Shlok. You just come back soon. Your return would be a present enough for me. I really miss my best buddy." This made Shlok smile while Astha stiffened. "Besides, remember...I still need to reveal my surprise." she said with a teasing tone. "By the way what was your family's surprise?"

Astha couldn't take their sweet talk anymore. No matter how strong she tried to act or make herself appear, there were times like this when she couldn't help feeling the throbbing ache of her broken heart. How cruel of him? Does he enjoy seeing me in pain? Does he not care for me at all? Why does he always do something which makes me hate him even more? All these thoughts were going on in her mind. Feeling the tears in her eyes, she abruptly stood up and hurried out of the room.

After promising to reveal his family's 'surprise' on his return, he ended the call. This time Shlok clearly saw the pain reflecting on her face. For some reason, this didn't make Shlok feel as satisfied as he thought it would. In fact he felt restless. Some part of his conscious was feeling guilty.

Precap: A completely drenched Astha was hurrying towards her room when she suddenly bumped into someone. Her wet form was about to slip on the marble floor but a pair of strong arms wrapped themselves around her waist to steady her.
