Part- 16

(A)

Khushi entered the ruin of concretes, stones, and irons. The roof over her head was almost falling, but she was beyond caring. Her eyes looked haunted and lost. As if she was in another lifetime, revisiting a place where her nightmares were a thing of reality.

Yes it is.

She walked in taking slow steps uncaring of the small scratches she got while passing the uneven path covered with bricks, stones and glasses, in places reaching till her shoulder height.

When she reached the place where she wanted to reach it was little clear there and she stood in the middle completely lost.

"What the heck!" He swore as crouched down behind the broken brick wall.

"What is it Kavi?" Khushi asked coming down till his level, but keeping an eye on the other members of the team, who were either busy firing or filling their guns with bullets, covering each other.

"They are more in numbers than we have been informed. That b*stard Shindey had double-crossed us. Mo***rf*cker! If we get out form here alive I will sure kill that worm with my bare hands." Kavi ranted refilling his pistol.

In this severe situation also Khushi smiled. She always found him cute when he was angry, scratch that livid actually.

Kavi caught her smiling looking at him and narrowed his eyes, "What is so funny? Care to share!"

"You" she answered immediately before turning and firing again.

Kavi too joined her and hissed beside her ear, "Let us get out of here and them I will take care of that smile of yours."

She turned to him for a brief moment her eyebrows up in question.

"And Darling I exactly know how!" He winked.

Khsuhi turned on time to shoot a goon advancing towards Shashi, who had been shouting orders in his wireless and at the same time instructing for more force on the Bluetooth from headquarter.

She saw him saluting in her direction in gratitude and smiled nodding her acceptance.

She then turned to Kavi and said "Better."

He looked little startled with the sudden remark and Khushi elaborated "We are going out of this place, no matter how and you are more than welcome to take care of my smile." She winked at the end making him smile genuinely.

And then both got busy covering each other as the fire-fight continued.

A few blasts could be heard nearby.

They were almost gaining control when Khushi saw something which made her leapt out of her hiding position.

"Kavi watch your back I am moving to the right" she said hurriedly and run to the said direction.

She thought she heard him say Okay'.

She was just in time to push NK and Abhay out of the gunshots, which were aimed to them form a higher level when they were busy beating daylight off of some men of the real culprits.

A bullet had hit her shoulder blade making her cry out in pain, but before she fall on the ground another horrified sight met her eyes...

Kavi tuning to her hearing her cry and just then a bullet hitting straight on the back of his head from behind.

And she knew it was impossible for him to survive that hit.

She had lost him forever, was her only thought before she submitted herself to the welcoming dark.

Her knees gave away as she fell down on the ground crying her heart out.

It was the place where the nightmare took place.

It was the place where she had been coming since then, whenever her guilt and hurt would start to overwhelm her to an extent to break her down.

She still remembered the next day when she woke up on the hospital bed fully aware that she had lost Kavi forever, who loved her and she was in the process of falling in love with him.

She had walked till the morgue with the help of Shashi and Abhay to bid her last goodbye to Kavi... Kavindra, with whom she had started to weave dreams of a new life and a bright future where he past wouldn't be haunting her, where they would only cherish their life together.

She had kissed his face which was pale and lifeless covered mostly in white bandages, which had bold red patches in places and had let him go, wishing a peaceful after life.

The she had turned only to meet his parents disgusted accusing eyes.

And they were true in their accusations;

You weren't worth still we accepted you because of him and you let him die. It is not them but you killed him. How could you do this to him? How could you leave him unprotected? Did you ever love him?

If she hadn't left him uncovered, unprotected that time then he wouldn't have been attacked form behind.

Yes she was scarred and violated in past, but it never mattered to Kavi and he had loved her irrespective of everything.

Yes she was no match for his pure soul but still his parents accepted her in their life for Him.

And what did she do to him? She let him die.

How could she do that to him? How could she forget that she was scarred and cursed to even get attached to a person like Kavindra, who was everything a girl could wish for a life partner.

And what did she do?

She pushed him to his death.

She didn't bother to turn back and check that if he really heard her or not.

She didn't think that she might be leaving him unguarded in that chaos where those vultures were awaiting to make a feast of them.

She just left him.

She hid her face in her hands. Her body shook violently when her gut wrenching screams and cries echoed in the area.

(B)

Arnav slumped down on the recliner in his room, tired after pacing the length of his room since Shashi left.

He was still thinking about the conversation that followed after the revelation...

"But Shashi how is that possible? How far we know you have only one daughter Payel after..." Devyani trailed off, confused, astonished and at the same time not wishing to bring the painful memory of Shashi's dead daughter.

Shashi understood her unsaid words and started where she left smiling sadly, "...After Lavnya. Yes Maaji."

Devyani looked down unable to meet his pained eyes.

Other looked on to their elders curious to know where this was going. Especially Arnav. He looked like his life depended on this conversation. Certainly.

"After Lavnya's fateful demises when we were left broken and coping with our loss, I found Khushi."

The way Shashi said it; it felt as if he had literally found happiness.

"And without delay we had embraced her in our life, who had filled the emptiness after Lavanya like it was never there. Though Lavanya's memories are always remained with us, but after Khsuhi, those memories never hurt us like they did before." Shashi smiled pushing his hands in his trouser pockets.

"I didn't tell you about her because Khushi didn't like attentions for some unavoidable reasons but Arvind knew about her like he knew every facts and secrets of my life and I knew his." Shashi completed.

All nodded unsurely.

"But Uncle... it was Arnav, but he closed his mouth as soon as he had opened it, not really able chose the question from the whirlwind of questions wrecking his head.

Shashi smiled seeing his confused face and patted his back saying, "I think I have given enough shock to you all for a day, we will continue again some other day. Right now I should leave. I am running really late for work." and with that he had taken his leave, leaving behind a confused silence.

"Oh Khushi!" Arnav whispered as if praying her to appear in his room magically and help him to get out these uncertainties.

His head fell back on the back rest as tiredness numbed his senses making him fell asleep.

Abhay exactly knew where to find Khushi when she wished to stay aloof from the world.

After entering the ruin and reaching the place where he was sure she would be, the sight that greeted him made him weak to even take another step.

Lay there in front of him the feisty Officer Khushi Caroline Gupta, like a broken glass doll, looking like already dead, barely breathing.

He roamed his eyes around the place, the memory of that fateful day still fresh in his mind.

It was for her that they, NK and him were alive, and she had paid heavily for saving them.

He had wanted to curse her for even saving him leaving Kavi to himself, but he knew it wasn't her fault it was circumstances.

It was just that he had been given a chance to be with Piya and Khusi had taken it from him while her life became a copy of his if not more burning and agonizing. For, she was already had lived hell in the beginning of her teenage and now she was living it again and this time also no fault of hers.

He sighed and walked ahead.

Khushi looked up sensing Abhay's presence and blinked a few times to get her vision clear.

Abhay lend his hand for her to take support and stand up. She took it gladly and then found herself in a warm embrace. She welcomed the warmth after leaving an hour of freezing hell.

And when they broke out of the hug, the ruin and Abhay witnessed, like many times before, the transformation of her demeanour from a broken guilt ridden haunted person to an outright rude arrogant feisty Police Officer, who masked her wounds under her indifferent attitude and poker face (most of the time), who now hid her red puffy eyes under the dark sheds and started walking to get out of the place with powerful steps. Duty calls.

So how was it?

Half of Khushi's past is now reveled.

And now you know why Khushi behave the way she does... hope it was convincing enough.

Now you also know why NK, Abhay and Khushi share a deep bonding...

And from now on you will see Arnav trying to break her walls, but slowly.

And the real mystery continues...
