I am loving it - thought i am saying it again, but you DO handle multiple characters pretty well.

How should I say - its like going through a maze, but there is a light bearer to show u the clear path - that kind of feeling I get when I read the way you write.

Thanks again honey for the beautiful update - and I apologize for late comment.

Part 5

Garud--Amrit Haran

Sauti Continued,

One Day, Kadru And Vinata Saw Uchchaeshrava Flying Over Their Ashram. They Argued About The Colour Of The Tail Of The Divine Horse. Vinata Said It Was Fair And Kadru Said It Was Dark. They Decided To Have The Closer Look At The Horse the Next Day, And The One Who Will Lose This Bet Will Become The Servant Of The Other.

Kadru Called Forth Her Sons And Asked Them To Go To Uchchaeshrava And Hang In His Tail To Make It Look Blackish. The Snakes Who Agreed To Do So, Kadru Cursed Them To Be Burnt At King Janmejaya's Sarpa-yagya. The Next Day, Vinata Was Much Distressed To See This, And Became Kadru Maidservant.

After 500 Years, The Second Egg Of Vinata Broke And Out Came Garud. He Went Across The Ocean To His Mother. Kadru, In Order To Belittle Vinata In Front Of Her Son, Ordered Her [Vinata] To Carry Her [Kadru] To A Beautiful Palace Inside The Ocean. Garud Was Told To Carry The Snakes.

When He Asked His Mother That Why He Should Carry His Brothers And Obey Them, She Narrated With Much Pain, How Kadru Had Deceived Her With The Help Of Her Children And Made Her [Vinata] Her [Kadru's] Maidservant. Garud Became Sad And Asked Them [Snakes] That What Could Be Done To Release Vinata And Garud From This Curse. The Snakes Replied, "Go Then, And Bring Us Amrit (Nectar). We Shall Release You Both Then." Garud Agreed Reluctantly.

Garud Went To His Mother To Ask For Permission For His Voyage, Which She Gladly Gave. She Said, "My Dear Son, On The Way You Are To Eat The Nishaads (Non-Aryan Hunters) Who Live At One Corner Of Aaryavart, But Don't Make Enemies With The Brahmins There." On His Way, As He Tried To Eat The Nishaads, He saw That One Brahmin Voluntarily Entered His Mouth. Garud Requested Him To Come Out As He [Garud] Did Not Want To Eat Him [Brahmin]. The Brahmin Replied, "I Shall Come Out Only If You Spare My Non-Aryan Wife." Garud Agreed And The Couple Came Out And Blessed Him.

Then Garud Went To His Father Kashyap, And Asked For Food. Sage Kashyap Said There Was Once A Quick-tempered Sage Called Vibhavasu. He Had A Brother Called Supratik. This Brother Kept On Nagging Him For The Division Of Property. One Day, Unable To Tolerate This Anymore, Sage Vibhavasu Cursed His Brother To Become An Elephant, Who In Turn Cursed His Elder Brother To Become A Tortoise. The Great Sage Kashyap Said, "Now, They Are Fighting Over There, Go, Eat Them And Relieve Them Of Their Curses."

Garud Killed The Two Animals, Held Them By His Nails And Went To Alamba To Look For A Place To Eat. All The Trees Trembled In Fear Of Any Damage Caused To Them By Garud. Only One Divine Tree Invited Garud To Sit Of His Branch And Eat. But The Moment Garud Sat On It, The Branch Broke, And Upon Seeing A Few People Hanging From It, He Caught The Branch In His Beak, And Roamed Around The Whole World Unable To Put It Down. At Last, Sage Kashyap Requested The Baalkhilya Sages, Who Were Hanging From The Branches, To Have Mercy On His Son And Let Him [Garud] Get Rid Of The Branch. The Baalkhilyas Left The Branch And Went To Finish Their Penance In The Himalayas. And In A Muffled Voice Asked His Father Of A Suitable Place To Throw It. His Father Suggested An Uninhabited Mountain Peak, Where Garud Threw The Branch And Ate The Animals.

Now, Garud Flew At A Great Speed Toward Amaravati, Lord Indra's Capital, Where The Amrit Was Stored. The Gods Became Terrified As They Saw Vinata's Son Garud Coming To Take Away The Amrit. There Was A Huge Battle Between The Gods And Garud Which Was Eventually Won By Garud, Who Then Entered The Secure Room In Which The Nectar Was Kept. Garud Saw That There Was A Fire Blazing All Around The Pot Of Amrit Which Is Surrounded By A Sharp Iron Chakra Which Was Rotating At A Great Speed. Above All, Two Poisonous Snakes Stood In Front Of The Kalash (Pot) To Protect It. However, Garud Crossed All The Barriers And was Successful In Taking Away Of The Amrit.

As He Was Coming Out, Garud Saw Lord Vishnu Waiting For Him At The Door, With His Kaumudaki Gada, A Mischievous Smile Playing On His Face. He Spoke Harsh Words About Why Garud Did Not Consume The Amrit But The Affection In His Eyes Gave Garud The Cheek To Tell Him [Lord Vishnu] On His Face That He [Garud] Would Take Away The Amrit Even If He [Lord Vishnu] Tried His Best To Stop Him [Garud].

"Okay, Okay, Calm Down, My Dear Chicken, You Don't Need To Be So Angry. Amrit is Lord Indra's Business, And You Both Can Settle Your Scores When I Leave, But Now, I've Come To Bless. So, Ask For A Boon.", The Supreme Raised His Hand In Surrender, As He Swayed To And Fro In His Chariot.

"Boon ? What Boon ? Is That What People Do When They Meet ?"

"Yes, My Child. Now, Ask, What Do You Want ?", Said The Naughty Lord, A Completely Unique Plan Playing In His Mind.

"Okay, So I Wish To Be Immortal Without The Help Of Any Nectar. And, I Wish To Be Placed Above You." Said Garud.

"Clever Boy !! Outwitting Me Like That ? A Good Companion He'll Make !" Narayan Thought As He Said, "Tathaastu (So Be It)."

"Now It's Your Turn, Vishnu ! Ask For Boons !" The Innocent Child Said Enjoying The Game. The Lord Took Full Advantage Of That And Said, Rejoicing In His Mind, "Okay, If You So Wish Then I Will. Umm...I Wish...You Become My Mount, And Stay In The Flag Above My Chariot. Happy ?" Garud Mimicked The Lord And Made A Great Show Of The "Tathaastu". Lord Vishnu Chuckled And Disappeared.

Now, Lord Indra, In A Complete Panic, Pounced On Garud With His Vajra. Garud Said, "O Lord, You Know, Nothing Will Happen To Me Now. You See, Even Your Lord Vishnu Couldn't Do Anything To Save You. But Yes, For The Respect Of You, Maharshi Dadhichi, From Whose Ribs This Vajra Was Made And Lord Vishwakarma Who Made This, I Throw This Feather Of Mine." On Seeing The Beautiful Feather, The Gods Named Garud As "Suparna" ('Good Feathered' Literally). Lord Indra Realized That It Was No Good Fighting With This Piece Of Bird, Who Could Even Outwit The Supreme With His Words, And Established A Relation Of Friendship Between Them.

Lord Indra Then Requested Garud To Give Back The Amrit, As He [Garud] Did Not Need It Anymore. But Garud Narrated The Whole Story, And Told Indra To Take Away The Amrit From
The Snakes As He [Garud] Would Keep Them Confused. When Lord Indra Told Garud To Ask For A Boon, Garud Said That He Wanted To Make The Snakes His Food.

Garud Returned To His Mother With The Amrit And Told The Snakes To Bathe Properly And Come Back, As He Kept The Amrit On The Grass. In This Time, Indra Sneaked In, Stole Back The Amrit And Went Back To The Heaven. Meanwhile, The Snakes Came Back And Mistaking The Grass For Amrit, Became To Lick Those Tufts Vigorously, As A Result of Which, Their Tongues Go Pierced Into Two.
