Hey guys! Hope you're all well! Finally exams are over, no rest though, started wedding preparations for my brother and my close friend. BUSY BUSY BUSY times ahead! But I've finally managed to finish the huge update, spent most of my time watching our OLD qubool hai and got slightly nostalgic, those golden days will never get old. Not to be critical but Surbhi's scenes used to be on point with KSG like he used to bring out the best in her, she looks bored nowadays as Sanam. AHH sighs, anyhooo anyone a DMG fanatic? I went back to my Armaan days and I've decided I'm not coming back. SIGH, a big fat SIGH! I thought let's give this new qubool hai a try but BILLU THE TART ruined my mood. I swear if she doesn't get cut into a billion pieces by the end of it all, it would be an insult to everyone who tolerated her for her horrifying death to come. FFS! Anyways, my updates have gone all emotional, hope noone kills me. Next ones will be packed with more stuff as it's finally ending. I've never enjoyed writing anything so much as this one. Thank you for your supports, means so so much!
NOTE: SORRY GUYS I GIVE UP, THE SPEECHMARKS HAVE DISAPPEARED. WILL HAVE TO FIX TOMORROW NOW. TOO TIRED.
Chapter 13
Tanveer stepped inside Zain's office with a huge grin on her face while Imran fumed behind Zain.
'Why the hell are you here? I told you I'll-' Imran was cut short by Tanveer.
Zain looked back and forth from Imran to Tanveer with confusion.
'You're too slow' cut in Tanveer.
'Excuse me, sorry I'm not taking any appointments today-' Zain tried to explain not understanding what he was meant to say.
'But I don't need an appointment for this' Tanveer smirked. Zain stepped forward,
'For what?' Asked Zain,
'Not now...' Imran paused staring at Zain's face, who turned around hearing Imran's voice, 'Tanveer!' Imran watched Zain's eyes widen with realisation and disbelief. Zain turned around and faced her smiling face; a lone tear escaped his eyes as stepped towards her.
'My son' Tanveer cried, 'You have grown, you have no idea how I've lived without you' She tried forcing out her tears but failed; this wasn't the time for her tear bank to dry out.
Zain slowly stepped towards her open arms before locking his hand around her throat and pushing her back, Tanveer choked dropping her bag and tried to remove his strangling grip. She dug her nails into his skin, scratching his arms as her eyes popped out of her. Imran stood shocked and mentally scolded himself for not having the courage to kill her with his own hands. He looked into Tanveer's helpless eyes as her face went red from the struggle and lack of air,
'How dare you enter my office and spread your filthy presence around me.' Zain spoke scornfully, as the rage in him slowly grew, he could finish her within seconds. Ayaat's face flashed before his eyes, Zoya's broken state and Asad's painful 18 years made his heart heavy. This woman had ruined all of their lives.
'Sohail, let go' Tanveer coughed almost bursting,
'Zain, let go beta. Why do you want to get your hands dirty?' Imran yanked his hand off Tanveer who gasped for air as soon as he let go. She held her hands across her chest kneeling on the floor trying to regain her breath.
'Let him kill me Imran, I have committed a sin leaving my child with those abusers' Tanveer faked a cry.
'GET OUTTT' Zain's voice thundered inside the office room. Tanveer shuddered before glaring at Zain, 'Get your pathetic little face out of here before I kick you out myself. It was good I didn't know what you looked like, now that I do, my nightmares won't end. Get the bloody hell out of here before I kill you' Zain spoke bitterly kicking the chair out of the way. Tanveer got up wiping her fake tears; she looked at Imran in the most irritated way. She threatened him with her eyes before walking out of his office.
'Argh how dare sheee' Zain picked up the chair and threw it away. He threw everything off his desk and grunted loudly, something was building up inside of him burning him like fire.
'Zain, be careful-' Imran froze looking towards the door, 'Zoya bhabie?' He whispered.
'Zain, look at these...' Ayaat halted seeing him destroy everything in front of him. She rushed inside and looked at Imran, 'What happened? And aap? Do I know you?' Ayaat asked confused,
'I'm Ali's father' Imran jumped hearing Zain punch his glass table,
'ZAINNN?!!!' Ayaat rushed towards him, 'Zain?' She pulled his shoulder; he nudged her away and kicked the stuff in front of her. Imran felt helpless, he walked out of the office wandering how the hell he was going to fix anything.
'Alaina' Imran looked at Alaina, he held the table regretting what he was going to ask for.
'Zain stop, you're hurt' Ayaat pleaded watching him destroy his desk.
'I will destroy everything. How dare she come here' Zain spoke crazily, his bleeding hand squeezed blood all over the documents in front of him. Ayaat tried to grab his moving hand; she gripped his shoulder to turn him when his hand hit her head.
'Ouch' Ayaat yelped holding her head with one hand and the other still on his shoulder. Zain froze as he stared ahead of him; she slowly turned him around and cupped his face. Her thumb brushed his tears away; he looked into her eyes before bursting into a cry. 'Zain' Ayaat whispered, 'Shhh'
'I can't stand her' Zain repeated again and again, 'I should've killed her!' He shivered with rage, tears still overflowing her eyes.
'She's gone' Ayaat tried to comfort him not knowing who he was talking about. His face slipped out of her hands as he dropped to his knees, all broken. She ran to the draw and brought out the first aid kit. She sat in front of him, wiping her tears away with the back of her hands as she focused on his hand. She took her shaky hands and lifted his hand up placing it on her lap. Zain looked up at her sadly as tears flowed from his eyes,
'Am I not destined for anything good?' Zain asked her, staring at her with wide eyes, Ayaat paused. 'I can't be if I've lost you' He whispered. Ayaat slowly looked up at him; her eyes met his teary ones. She shook her head to brush off his questions, she was taken aback finding his hand turn under her chin to catch her tears. She stared his palm where her tear lay,
'Whether you hate me or love me, I cannot see a single tear in your eyes, and never will I stand it if I'm the reason' Zain closed his hand and took it back. She looked at him blinking at his words.
'Don't give yourself that much importance, why will I cry for you?' Ayaat coughed, her voice still came out broken. She tried looking here and there; please fight back Zain.
'Ayaat?' Zain looked at her as she stood on her feet; she looked the other way waiting for him to speak. 'Ayaat?' He called again, 'Ayaat?' He called again, softly.
'What?' She looked down at him,
'Why are you crying?' He asked her with the most heartbroken expression on his face, Ayaat mocked a laugh.
Zain slowly got up onto his feet and stared at her back for an answer.
'My life has fallen apart Mr Khan; my family is hurt but won't show it, I'm slowly dying... Is there a better reason to cry?' She turned around and faced him; Yes Zain, for a split moment today I forgot I was dying, rather I felt empty because you were wanting to go away from me. I'm crying because you're hurt, I'm crying because I cannot stop my dying heart from loving you, so madly and so passionately. This, Zain, is the real deception.
'There is no reason to cry Miss Khan' Zain returned the formality and sarcasm of her tone of voice. 'Or maybe there is. For losing hope, for being so weak and for being so selfish' Ayaat widened her eyes at his tone of voice and choice of words. 'We all have hope, we're all living because of hope. Hope that you'll be fine, and you being so weak to be able to let go of that string of hope makes you a coward and selfish. Your parents are hurt but they are strong because they know they'll be able to make you better. They have faith nothing will happen to you. You talking about dying is insulting their faith. So no there isn't any reason to cry because you're hurting every person that ever loved you by shedding those tears.' Zain spoke bitterly.
'Did you just call me a coward?' Ayaat gritted her teeth.
'Did you not hear anything I said?' Zain spoke mockingly, half laughing. 'Why do I even waste my time?' Ayaat's mouth opened wide. She picked her finger up and was about to speak when Zain sealed her lips together.
'How about you use your finger to keep these sealed?' Zain told her as her eyes opened wide. 'And use your energy to speak to walk down those stairs and sit in the car' Zain let go and walked out grabbing his coat. He turned near the door, 'and thank you for this' He held his bandaged hand up at her. She blinked back at him before watching him leave. After a few moments, she followed behind him.
'Did anyone come here?' Ayaat asked Alaina as Zain spoke to someone on the other side.
'What happened to you, are you okay?' Asked Alaina touching her forehead; there was a small cut near her hairline. Ayaat placed her hand on her forehead, Zain turned around in the middle of his conversation. Ayaat brushed it off and waited for Alaina to answer. 'Yeah, Imran came. Your uncle and-' Alaina was cut off by her phone. She held her finger up and picked up the call. Ayaat nodded her head; it doesn't matter. She waved at Alaina and walked out of the office. Ayaat breathed out as she stood in front of her car, she touched her hair and whimpered. She saw Zain's reflection appear behind her, she let go of her hair instantly.
Zain turned her shoulder and brushed her arms sighing. He shook his head in a no before trailing his fingers on her forehead playing with her fringe. He reached forward and placed a kiss on her cut and looked at her,
'Sorry' Zain whispered. Ayaat shook her head and got inside the car,
'It's okaay' She spoke back softly.
Ayaat entered the house to find her family in deep conversation; the whole house was lit up with laughter, music and the youngsters' jokes. Zoya looked up and smiled at Ayaat before coming up to hug her tightly,
'What was that for?' Ayaat laughed once she let go,
'Because we missed you' Ayaan kissed her head and scooped her up into his arms and ran towards the sofa making Ayaat burst into a giggling fit. Ayaat looked back at Zain who walked towards Asad before taking him into the bedroom.
'She came today, I saw her for the very first time' Zain spoke dazed.
'Zain speak clearly, Ayaan hasn't told me anything. Who came?' Asad asked impatiently, 'Tanveer?' Asad closed the door shut.
'Tanveer' Zain repeated with tears overflowing his eyes. 'She's not my mother, but I raised my hand on A mother...' He looked at his bandaged hands. 'I didn't allow her to speak, my hatred for her didn't allow it' Zain looked towards the door as Ayaan entered and ran towards him taking him into an embrace.
'Don't worry about it son.' Ayaan comforted Zain. 'Ayaat didn't see her that's all that matters right this moment. She couldn't fool you. And she never will be able to.'
'I should've got her arrested. I didn't know what to do. Charlie, how does Tanveer know Imran fufa? He was here at the office. It was pretty strange' Zain sat down on the bed. Asad opened the door and looked back; he looked at Najma's smiling face with Ali beside her.
'Why did she come to you?' Asad left them with a question; his eyes went over Zain's bandaged hand momentarily not wanting to ask him anything else.
'You didn't tell me what you're studying...' Ayaat looked at Ali taking a huge bite out of her cake. Ali watched her fuss with the bits of cake on her lap; Asim slumped next to her on the sofa making her jump up slightly. He wrapped his arm over her shoulder and took the remaining bit of her cake and scoffed it down making another mess next to him.
'Heyyy! That was mineee' Ayaat cried.
'Too late' Asim shrugged his shoulders resting his chin on her shoulder.
'Ewww Asim get away from me!' Ayaat hit his hand and poked his cheek to remove him off her shoulder. She looked up at an uncomfortable Ali glaring at Asim.
'Erm this is Asim, and this is my cousin Ali' Ayaat introduced them, Asim waved a hello while Ali's expressions remained the same. 'Where have you been all day?' Ayaat nudged Asim.
'Busy busy busy' Asim replied laughing,
'With what?' She asked with wide eyes, he just winked at her. 'Forget it, you know what, it's actually good to see that smile on your face.' Ayaat took his hand and wiped it on his shirt before bringing it onto her lap, 'Asim I-' Ayaat's voice cut off hearing Ali get up abruptly, she stared at him watching him walk towards the kitchen.
'Were you going to confess your darkest secrets?' Asim teased, Ayaat looked at him with teary eyes. Asim sat up and brushed her tears away with the back of his fingers,
'Heyy, shhh. I was joking. It's okay, you can hide your secrets. I don't want to know, just don't cry. I hate seeing tears in your eyes' He cupped her face, 'We're meant to be twins, if you cry it will hurt me the most, so stop it.' Asim frowned at her, he pouted and waited for her to look at him. 'By the way, wanted to discuss something important with you'
'What?' Ayaat sniffed, as her big round eyes stared at her twin brother,
'We need to establish who's the elder twin' Asim smiled.
'It's me obviously' Ayaat pointed to herself.
'Nuh uhhh, it's me. Choti' Asim patted her head,
'NOOO!' Ayaat grabbed a pillow, 'I don't want to play that game then... go away!' She pouted. Asim laughed holding his waist,
'CHOTI!' Asim mouthed. Ayaat jumped up and chased him with the pillow. She ran behind him as he jumped over the sofa and speeded around the living room laughing.
'Asimmm!' Ayaat's eyes opened wide as Asim turned around and faced her while running backwards when suddenly Zain walked out of her father's bedroom in between them. She tried to stop running, the pillow fell out of her hands over head, her body bent backwards trying to stop herself from colliding into him when she felt her body sinking backwards. She blinked as Zain ran towards her to help her but in the process he slipped forward, his arms wrapped around her waist while they both fell flat against the pillow, with Zain over Ayaat. Ayaat shut her eyes tightly, the whole house went unusually quiet, all she could hear was him breathing over her. The hairs on her neck shot upright as goose bumps ran over every inch of her body. She slowly opened her eyes to meet his dark brown orbs observing her, the love and care pouring out of those eyes did something to her heart as it started beating erratically. She looked down only to realise it wasn't her heart that was threatening to blow out of her, it was his that was beating frantically over her chest. She looked at his face,
'Zain, I-'
'Ahemmm?' Sofia and Asim coughed over them, Zain shot upwards on to his knees. He was about to put his hand out towards her when Ali's hand brushed past his shoulder. Ayaat stared at it for a moment, Sofia noticing her hesitation sat on the floor next to her. Asim too sat down after Sofia.
'So you were saying?' Asim winked, Ayaat grabbed him by the neck and threw him on the floor before jumping over him to hold him down, 'Areyyy, I was joking. Ayaat, listen to me... SORRY BOSS!'
'THERE YOU GO!' Ayaat rolled over next to him, she hi-fived Sofia before bursting into a giggling fit. Asim looked up from the floor; he stared at Sofia feeling something burst inside of him.
'OMG' Asim shrieked like a girl, everyone stared at him. 'Put the volume up Innayah, my favourite song' Asim grabbed Ayaat's hand and got up and made her twirl around.
'HOW DARE HEEE?' Tanveer threw her purse over Imran's head who ducked to save himself. He walked over to her and slammed the papers in her hand,
'I AM DONE!' Imran turned around to leave,
'I don't think so' Tanveer's tone pierced through his skin. He reluctantly turned around and stared at her questioningly. Tanveer read over the documents, 'Zoya and Dilshad?' She spoke disbelievingly. She gritted her teeth and tore the papers apart before throwing the paper over her head like confetti.
'What else did you expect?' Imran rubbed salt on her wounds with his smirk,
'OFCOURSE! Technically, he's my son. Why else would they give him anything?' Tanveer spoke bitterly, 'Selfish b******!'
'So that is why you were sucking up to him, that is why you remembered him after 18 years Tanveer. WOW, if that's not twisted, then I don't know what is. Selfish eh? Have you looked in the mirror lately?' Imran shook his head. Tanveer looked up at him with red eyes, 'Don't look at me, I'm just merely stating your condition right now.'
'You're so funny you are Imran' Tanveer mocked a laugh, she poured herself some drink and took a sip before sighing, 'don't worry, I'll still have my way' She rubbed her neck,
'Do you want me to massage that?' Imran showed his hands with a huge grin on his face,
'GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE!' Tanveer barked at him. He shrugged his shoulders and walked out whistling. 'Don't worry Imran Miah, this was nothing. Just a mere trailer, what I have planned will blow your mind. That stupid rat' She touched her neck, 'I will destroy him first, useless child. Should've known he was bad luck from the start' Tanveer gulped the rest of the drink down her.
-
'Okaay calm down Asim' Ayaat exclaimed trying to catch her breath. Asim held her hand and pulled her closer,
'You okay? You don't look too great-' Asim spoke worriedly, Ayaat rested her chin on his shoulder trying to get back her strength,
'Is this another one of your joke, do I look that bad?' She tried to divert his attention,
'I'm serious you spooon!' Asim hit her back playfully, Ayaat's eyes rolled upwards as she coughed into her hands. Zain rushed forward towards her,
'Bhaijaan' Ayaat whispered before being dragged away by Zain.
'Ayaat?' Asim stared at his hands and then touched his shoulder. 'Bhaijaan' was still ringing in his ears, this was the first time she had called him that, the first time she referred to him as her brother, it didn't seem like they were still playing their twin game. He stared at her back as Zain walked her into her room; her body looked like it was being supported into the room. Zain rushed towards the tissue box and wiped the side of her mouth, Ayaat stared at the stained tissues. She looked up at Zain with teary tired eyes,
'Did you take your medicine?' Zain asked,
'I did-no not that one' Ayaat looked at the second set of tablets that was held up by Zain. She closed her eyes and pressed her forehead.
'You know you shouldn't jump about then why do you do it?' Zain asked her passing her the tablet.
'Why shouldn't I? What happened to your hope?' She spoke sarcastically gulping the tablet down with water. He held the tissue with the blood stains on it,
'When were you intending on telling me that you're coughing up blood?' Zain demanded an answer, Ayaat stared at it meekly.
'Why do you care?' Ayaat grabbed it off him.
'Oh we're playing that again, are we?' He shook his head wiping her lips, 'Let's not shall we' He brushed the hair on her forehead, his eyes went over the blouse. He looked at her sadly,
'What?' Ayaat asked blankly, he shook his head in a no.
'Quit the fake attitude' Zain threw at her before leaving the room frustrated and heartbroken. He wiped the beads of sweat off his forehead; Asim asked him what was wrong. Zain shook his head in a no. He froze near the stairs; he looked back at Ali who had been behaving weirdly with him since he got back from London; what was up with him.
He brushed it off and ran up the stairs, he found Zoya near the doors of the balcony. He tapped her shoulder; Zoya turned around and stared at him.
'What happened?' Zoya asked him, she placed her hand on his cheek, 'Zain beta, why do you look so upset?'
'How do I tell you, how will we handle her now?' Zain frowned.
'What's wrong? Tell me clearly'
'Have you got them documents signed?' Tanveer asked impatiently,
'Not yet' Replied Asim rubbing the back of his neck,
'What are you waiting for then? You've been there for so long; don't tell me you're waiting for an auspicious moment now?' Tanveer spoke sarcastically.
'I'm trying mama, it's too risky right now. If he reads those papers, game plan over' Asim spoke frustrated.
'I thought you gained his trust?' Tanveer rolled her eyes.
'I have, but it doesn't mean he won't check those papers' Asim sighed.
'We need a diversion' Tanveer told him, 'well, tomorrow-'
'Mama, I can't do anything tomorrow' Asim spoke quickly,
'What? Listen to me' Tanveer spoke suspiciously, 'not tomorrow, the day after tomorrow is Holi. It's perfect. I'll leave it up to you then' Tanveer cut the phone line.
'Bye mama' Asim stared at the phone, 'I'm doing perfect and I love you too' He threw the phone on the bed.
'You're meeting her tomorrow aint you?' Zain's voice came from behind, Asim turned around quickly,
'Whooo?' Asim stuttered,
'Why are you sweating like you've been caught doing something naughty?' Zain winked,
'Huh?' Asim spoke lost; Zain shook his head and punched his stomach before laughing. Asim brushed his hair back nervously, 'Zain, is Ayaat okaay?'
'Why, what makes you ask that?' Zain walked towards the window,
'She said something to me, I mean it's not anything unusual but idk that moment, she seemed...'
'She seemed?' Zain turned around,
'Like she needed help. Like she was breathless, ahh idk. That moment, every nerve in my body was saying something, it wanted to protect her. I wanted to shield her from whatever it was that was hurting her' Asim looked at his hands. 'I don't know, that girl is crazy. She never takes care of herself' Asim laughed it off.
'You said she said something to you' Zain creased his forehead. 'What was it?'
'I must have misheard it, idk' Asim shrugged his shoulders, Zain's stubborn looks made him feel uneasy, 'it was a whisper, idk why I'm thinking so much, it's not like it was out of place. She called me bhaijaan' Asim laughed. Zain stared at him,
'She really cares about you, you know that?' Zain asked him, Asim laughed. 'She really does' He spoke in a serious tone.
'We're twins-' Asim was cut off by Zain,
'She had a twin brother.' Zain told him. Asim straightened up and stared at him surprised.
'She had?' Asim repeated,
'He was killed when he was born' Zain spoke sadly,
'Killed?' Asim gulped. 'How?'
'Well I'll leave that till later. But for now, my point was that...'
'She sees me as her brother, she didn't just say it, she means it' Asim smiled.
'Just understand that she really cares about you, don't ever hurt her. For everyone you may just be another person living in this house, for her, you're like her brother. Closer than blood' Zain explained hoping that Asim would understand when he finds out the truth.
'Anyways, you coming down? Everyone getting together downstairs, it's going to be a long night' Zain laughed,
'Damn it, I needed my beauty sleep' joked Asim.
'Come on, let's go down' Zain grabbed him by the shoulder,
'So am I like your saala now?' Asim teased,
'In time my brother, all in good time' Zain laughed.
Ayaat sat in front of the mirror; she touched the ends of her hair and whimpered, her lips quivered as emotions overwhelmed her. She ran her fingers through her hair; she pulled her draw open and brought out a plastic wallet. She gathered the hair that piled in her hand and placed it into the wallet with all her hair that had been falling out due to her treatment. She was really attached to her hair; the same as her mother's except it was curlier. She was hurting seeing everything that she used to admire in the mirror slowly wither away. She laughed staring at her reflection,
'I guess I couldn't live without you for any longer Ahsaan' Ayaat whispered wiping her tears away.
'Ayaat?'
Ayaat quickly hid the packet and looked back,
'Ammi, what's up?' Ayaat laughed taking her hair to one side.
'Oil massage?' Zoya held a small cup in front of her, 'Come out here.' Zoya walked out of the room seeing Ayaat nod, she hid behind the wall sighing. She closed her eyes and shook herself; she had to be strong. She walked over towards the sofa and sat down next to Asad. Ayaat walked out of her room quietly and sat down on a pillow below her mother. Zoya's hand shook as they slowly touched Ayaat's hair,
'Ayaat, why don't you get me to massage your hair anymore? I told you it makes your hair grow stronger and darker' Zoya spoke staring at Dilshad and Zain who pressed their eyes.
'Hmmm' Ayaat closed her eyes and leaned back against the sofa avoiding everyone's deep stares; what has gotten into everyone. She felt weird staring at Ali, she didn't know why. Once Zoya was done, she tied her hair into a bun. Ayaat got up and crawled up onto the sofa next to her Abbu digging herself into his chest. She took her father's hand and kissed it.
'What were you saying Humeira?' Asad asked cuddling Ayaat.
'I don't know bhaijaan. Ammi keeps telling me off, I'm sure you'll agree this is not the right time for Sofia's marriage. She isn't understanding, would you get Ayaat married at this age.' Humeira sighed. Zoya shook her head warning Humeira to avoid that question as Asad held Ayaat tighter.
'Ofcourse not. Is she crazy? They have their whole life ahead of them. They're going to university and make a career. I will not allow this Humeira' Asad spoke protectively. Ayaat peeked at Zain who frowned tapping his fingers on his watch indicating the wait; she rolled her eyes. Asim stared at Sofia, the thought of her marriage made him slightly uncomfortable.
'Nikhat-'
'Ammi' Sofia jumped up onto her feet, 'not again, pleaseee' Sofia pleaded, 'not again' She whispered as tears escaped her eyes. Ayaat popped her head upwards, she watched Sofia rush inside her room. Ayaat got up and followed her,
'Goodnight everyone!' Ayaat waved, 'it was nice meeting y'all' She told Ali and Zuhair,
'What, what about our match?' Zuhair frowned, Ayaat faked a yawn,
'Oh is that the time' Ayaat looked at the imaginary watch on her hand, 'it's passed my bedtime' She gave him a cheesy smile, Asad winked at her while Dilshad burst out laughing. She blew them a kiss and closed the door behind her before rushing to comfort Sofia.
'Heyyy' Ayaat closed her eyes placing her hand over Sofia and nuzzling her nose into her back, 'Ignore everyone, they've gone crazy. You heard Abbu na, he won't let any of it happen. Only what you want will happen.' She rubbed Sofia's belly making her laugh, 'You ready for tomorrow?' Ayaat sat up, 'I have the perfect outfit' She beamed before falling forward and kissing Sofia's cheeks.
-
Asad kneeled outside the bathtub while his fingers ran over Zoya's forehead; Zoya closed her eyes as she tried to relax in the warm bath. Asad had dimmed the lights in the bathroom and placed candles in each corner of the room; he wanted to create a relaxing atmosphere for her. The last couple of weeks have been tougher than tough; she needed some time to herself to let it all out.
Asad gathered water in his palms and brushed it over her chest and her arms, his fingers caressed her cheeks watching her lips quiver.
'Shhh' Asad spoke softly reaching over and placing a kiss on her forehead; Zoya slowly opened her eyes and admired her supportive husband who had literally turned into a rock to provide her with strength to cope with everything related to their daughter. He was heartbroken inside, maybe more broken than her; they say mothers are the closest to their children as to anyone else, even their own fathers. In this case, the saying was so wrong in so many ways. In the 18 years that Ayaat had spent away from her father, their bonding never ceased to exist. Their relationship was deeper than anything, deeper than anything anyone could have imagined. Their hearts were always one, Ayaat may have been born from her, she only belonged to her father. That's why there's another saying, for daughters, their father's will always be their first love. As the days went by, Asad's patience was starting to break finding out he couldn't do anything to help his bundle of life. Asad and Zoya's bone marrow did not match perfectly with Ayaat's.
A lone tear escaped Asad's eyes, Zoya shook her head taking his hand to her lips and kissing his palm before holding it against her cheeks.
'There is a reason Allah gave us another chance Asad...' Zoya whispered.
-----
'Heyy, wake up!' Sofia pushed Ayaat half nervously, half excitedly,
'NOO!' Grunted Ayaat pulling the duvet over her, 'Close those curtains Sofia, I understand the sun has risen but I haven't!' Ayaat cried under the duvet.
'Ayaat bhaji, please' Sofia pleaded only to hear Ayaat grumble a no. Sofia got under the duvet and stared at her, 'Please' Sofia whispered into her ears,
'AHHH' Ayaat sat upright holding her ears, 'That tickles, what is wrong with you? It's only 9a.m' Ayaat spoke with wide eyes.
'I love you bhaji' Sofia moved her eyelashes,
'Yeahyeah whatever' Ayaat got up and zombie-walked into the bathroom while Sofia got under the duvet and waited for her in a panicky state; how was she going to keep herself together meeting him today?
Ayaat stared at Sofia as she tied her hair to a high bun without changing her PJ's; she shook her head and walked towards the door,
'Where are you going?' Sofia asked getting out of bed,
'Breakfast' Ayaat replied calmly, 'If you can't eat, great, more food for me. But don't complain when your stomach rumbles in the middle of your meeting' Ayaat smirked hearing Sofia run to her side.
'Goodmorrr-' Ayaat's eyes squinted before letting out a small growl seeing Aaliyah hug her father. She stormed towards him and pulled him away ignoring Aaliyah's greetings.
'What are you doing?' Ayaat whisper yelled at Asad,
'What am I doing?' Asad asked her, 'And why are you whispering?'
'That girl' Ayaat glared at Aaliyah talking to Ayaan and Humeira, laughing.
'She's-'
'I know who she is' Ayaat looked at her father, 'Stay away from her' She warned him before walking away. She paused hearing Aaliyah come towards her,
'Thank you uncle, I'll pop by in the evening' Aaliyah hugged Asad, Ayaat spun on her feet, Asad shrugged his shoulders helplessly taking her glares.
'Bye beta' Asad waved meekly, Ayaat's nose flared while she growled as jealousy ran through every vein in her body. 'Ayaat listen to me... What did I do?' Asad looked at Zoya who laughed,
'Jealousy Asad. You're only hers' Zoya winked,
'Ofcourse I'm only yours, trust me. Ayaat?' Asad ran behind Ayaat,
'Don't talk me. Make her your daughter why don't you' Ayaat closed the door and locked it, Sofia stared at Asad,
'She's in a really bad mood, woke up on the wrong side of the bed' Sofia wiped her forehead nervously before sitting on the dining table. Asad pressed his temples hurt by Ayaat's words before turning around and looking at Zoya. She stepped forward and brushed his shoulders before holding his hands,
'It's okay. Her emotions are all over the place right now Asad. We need to be understanding, if we get hurt like this every time how will we handle her. She is our daughter, she will come round don't worry. Once she realises, she'll be crying in your arms. She didn't mean it' Zoya comforted him.
'I know' Asad whispered softly, 'I really want to know what is affecting her so much, I really want her to share whatever she is keeping bottled inside her heart. I wish I could help her, I know I know, but really, I feel so helpless right now' He embraced Zoya.
'Oh hello lovebirds, food isn't going to stay hot forever' Ayaan teased, Asad remained still on the spot pretending that none of them was here right this very moment.
'In my mind, you all don't exist. Keep your mouth shut before that happens in reality' Asad threatened Ayaan. Zoya tapped his chest, 'Yes, thanks for keeping me sane' He whispered kissing her forehead.
-
'You look fine Sofia, come on' Ayaat dragged Sofia out of the house,
'You sure I look okay? Please stick by me' Sofia spoke nervously,
'Sofia. Please, just be yourself. I don't know what you search for when you look into the mirror, but ask me what I see. I see a beautiful girl with the purest of hearts. You have nothing to be afraid of. Listen to me Sofia, you two need to meet alone. You guys might not be able say what you want to if I'm there' Ayaat cupped her face while Sofia nodded. 'That's my good girl! Don't worry I'll drop you off' Ayaat placed her hand over Sofia's shoulder, she felt a pull on her shoulder,
'I don't think so Miss Moody!' Zain turned her around,
'What do you want now?' Ayaat spoke tiredly,
'How about you go in there and apologise to your Abbu?' Zain gave her a look, Ayaat sighed,
'I don't know how to' She mumbled,
'WHAT?' Zain creased his forehead,
'I don't know how to, I just don't know' Ayaat frowned, Sofia rubbed her arm. Zain mocked a laugh,
'What has gotten into you Ayaat, you were never like this' Zain looked at her, Ayaat felt something inside of her; what was actually wrong with her? She was never like this, how could she hate someone she didn't know and jealousy? Yes, whatever she was feeling was jealousy, but it was her problem. What has everyone else done? Nothing. She closed her eyes taking a deep breath in and then out. She brushed her hair back and held her hands on top of her head realising that she was being stupid.
'Asim Asim, one second' Zain stopped Asim who ran out of the house all dressed up.
'What's wrong?' Asim stopped looking at his watch, he hid the gift bags behind his back,
'Could you drop Sofia off? You're going town right?' Zain asked, Asim's eyes widened while Sofia stared at Asim; what if Asim sees her there?
'No it's okay, I'll be fine.' Sofia protested,
'No I'll drop you' Asim smiled.
'Here, take my keys' Ayaat threw the keys at Asim who caught it with a wide grin on his face,
'You sure you trust him with those keys?' Ali popped up, 'After all, he is a stranger living in this house. We do not allow our girls to roam around-'
'I'm sorry but I disagree with you' Ayaat spoke sternly, Asim looked at Ayaat. 'Asim is family whether anyone accepts it or not. I trust him with my life' She looked at Asim who stared at the ground feeling it pull him inside as his guilt rose bit by bit, 'As for 'our' girls roaming around with strangers, I can assure you Asim is the only person who can take care of our Sofia, I mean, he will make sure nothing happens to her' Ayaat held Sofia's hand and pressed it before looking at Asim and smiling. She sighed looking at the two, Zain gave her look; what are you up to Ayaat? Ayaat smirked back at him, 'Zuhair bhaijaan, you have no problem with Asim dropping Sofia off in town right? She had a few important things to do and...'
'Of course not. You guys go ahead' Zuhair walked towards them and placed his arm over Ayaat's shoulder, 'How about that game?'
'Bhaijaan, I need to talk to Abbu first'Ayaat pouted,
'I know' He smiled dragging her and Zain inside, Ayaat turned around and blew a kiss towards Sofia before winking at her. Asim stared at her expressions, that girl is up to something. 'Ali Bhaijaan, come on in'
'Sofia let's go' Asim put his hand out, Sofia nervously stepped forward and sat inside the car.
-
Ayaat sat on the floor with Zuhair, Hassan, Hussain, Ali and Innayah while Zain watched like a boring old grandpa. They had switched games 10 times in the last hour, from the PlayStation to monopoly to snakes and ladders. They settled on 'snap' with the cards when Innayah cried she wanted to play charades. They had forgotten the duel was between Ayaat and Zuhair, they ignored their urge to compete and played a friendly game.
'Zain, you're in my team' Zuhair jumped up and dragged him,
'Ali bhaijaan, yaaay, you're in ours' Innayah clapped, Ayaat leaned against Hassan as Ali came and sat down next to Innayah. She smiled at Ali wondering what it was that was making her act weirdly towards him, was it his intense dark eyes that showed some sort of passion or was it his black orbs that poured out hatred and bitterness. She didn't know what it was but she did not agree with any of his views that has shown its presence in front of her.
'Hassan will go from our team, come here babycheeks' Ayaat pulled his ears and whispered something into his ears, 'Goodluck' She kissed his cheek,
'Movie, Indian' Zuhair shouted as Hassan acted his movie out, '3 words, first word' Zain shouted, 'Dil' Clapped Hussain excitedly who got a look off his big brother to chill out, 'Pull, keech, lambi, waves, what the hell is that you stupid fool' Zuhair threw his sweet wrapper at his baby brother, 'Chahta, yes it's chahta' Zain hi-fived Zuhair, 'Dil chahta hai' Zuhair cheered,
'Bakwaas movie' Yawned Zain, Ayaat glared at him,
'You think of something better then Mr Genius' Ayaat pulled her tongue out like a child,
'Behave you two!' Zuhair spoke defensively, 'My turn' Zuhair got up and acted out his part.
'Khabi Alvida Na Kehna' Ali put his hand out, Innayah looked at him shocked,
'Have you seen it bhaijaan, I thought you-'
'Yeah you and Ammi always go on about it' Ali brushed his little sister's hair,
'My turn' Ayaat jumped up, Zain rolled his eyes. She listened carefully as Innayah whispered a movie name into her ears, 'Seriously? You couldn't think of any other movies? Typical' Ayaat shook her head getting up and standing in front of them.
Ayaat stuck four fingers out, before rolling her hand to indicate it was an Indian movie.
'Indian movie, yeah yeah continue' Zain teased earning a glare off her. '4 words, right, first word' Zain stared at her as she got frustrated doing the same moves, 'you're cheating, you don't want us to win that's why you're not doing it properly' Ayaat stared at him with wide eyes before kicking the air making him move back, 'You look like a buffooon'
'I swear I will kill you' Ayaat jumped forward only to be held back by Zuhair. She did the actions again, Zain smiled as he admired her moving around acting out cute moments to get them to understand,
'What is it Ayaat bhaji' Hussain held his head, 'Do it again' He pleaded, Ayaat smiled remembering the cute moments from the film, she got up and decided to act out some bits of the song; she pouted at the 3 pair of eyes staring at her, she sighed and grabbed Innayah's neck scarf. She tied it around her like a saree and pretended to bounce a basketball,
'10 seconds, 10, 9, 8' Innayah did a countdown, Ayaat rolled her hands asking them to hurry up as if they were in her team, she looked at Zain with wide eyes shaking her head up and down,
'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' Zain spoke finally not being able to see her so impatient and helpless,
'Finally' Ayaat cheered jumping up and down breaking into a bhangra dance, she spun and froze with her arms in the air seeing her father, Asad stopped and stared at her. Ayaat's eyes filled up as Asad's lips slowly curved into a smile, she ran towards him and jumped into his arms. Asad held her tight and lifted her up into the air, 'I'm so so sorry Abbu' Ayaat whispered into his ears,
'It's okay baby!' Asad caressed her hair kissing the side of her head. 'A game of basketball with my little basket?'
'Sure thing Abbu' Ayaat's eyes glistened with excitement.
-
Sofia opened the window in the car as she started sweating profusely,
'Sofia, are you okay? You don't look too well' Asim stopped the car,
'Yeah yeah, what's wrong with me?' Sofia stuttered, touching her forehead,
'Erm wait, let me get you some water' Asim got out of the car and walked towards the shop. As he was about to leave with the water bottle, he received a phone call, 'Shit, erm, Hello Mama?' Asim faked a smile looking around,
'Where are you?' Tanveer asked him,
'I'm busy Mama, I'll have to call you back' Asim looked here and there,
'Why do you look so guilty? Who is that girl with you, is that your busy?' Tanveer grilled him,
'Mama, it's nothing. I was asked to take her somewhere, I'll call you back tonight' He hung up on her and ran towards the car, he gulped getting another call,
'Don't you dare hang up on me like that, ever again. Who is that girl?' Tanveer barked,
'Jee Mama, I'm sorry. Ayaan Ahmed Khan's daughter, Sofia.' Asim replied quietly,
'Oh really' Tanveer smirked, 'I think I just found your diversion. Tomorrow is Holi, and from what I know, they will be attending a Holi party, bhang and a room for two is what you will need' Tanveer smiled.
'Mama, you're joking right. I mean she's innocent, how can I do that to her?' Asim spoke baffled as he stared at Sofia through the glass.
'I didn't say do anything to her. Don't worry, your mama isn't that bad. Just put her under the illusion that something did happen. If not, just pay someone else to do it and somehow inform the whole family. I need Asad to be distracted so that he doesn't read those papers' Tanveer explained, 'Why do you feel so guilty? Don't tell me you've fallen for her?'
'Erm, no mama. It's nothing like that' Asim closed his eyes, 'Bye mama.' He sighed heavily before getting into the car.
'I'll see you later, let me know when you need a lift back' Asim told Sofia as she got out of the car in a dazed state, 'Heyyy you, look here; smile' He demonstrated with his thumb and indent finger over his lips. Sofia nodded before disappearing into the crowd; Asim sighed and parked inside the mall's carpark. He got out of the car with the gift bags, he walked towards the flower shop and bought a bouquet of yellow flowers, his eyes had ran over the red ones over and over again but he decided it would be too much for her. He didn't want to scare her,
'If anything, I would at least like to know your real name' He told himself. 'I will never force my feelings upon you, ever. I don't even know if you feel the same way, after all, this is our first ever 'real' meeting. I feel like a teenager all over again who crushed on celebrities on TV and blushed every time he thought of them. Almighty, please help me.' He prayed walking towards the huge garden with tall hedges and ponds. There was a small cafe right in the distant; he slowly walked towards it, with each step his heart threatening to beat right out of him. He sat down on one of the tables as his eyes ran over the whole garden, it was quite peaceful here, no wonder she wanted to meet here. Not because it was discreet, but because the atmosphere was so calm and beautiful. He sighed ordering a cup of coffee.
Coincidently, Sofia was sat right behind him with her back towards him. She felt anxious; she couldn't hear anything but her speeding heart. She took a sip of her coffee and looked around the beautiful garden; how the hell would she recognise him? She told him that her heart would recognise him and vice versa, but now that this moment was actually here, she was doubting herself. She placed her hand over her face and sighed into her hands.
'Excuse me?' She heard a voice, her heart popped inside of her as her stomach did somersaults; where the hell were these butterflies she asked herself. She slowly removed her hands, her eyes ran upwards; his smart black pants, with a white shirt tucked in, her eyes went over his neck and then landed on his face, he had the cutest specs on. She was about to speak but his words made her burst out laughing, 'Can I borrow this seat?' Sofia nodded before kicking herself. She stared at her phone; no messages, no calls. Before she knew it, it was an hour after the actual meeting time. She felt disheartened wandering about the reasons why he couldn't come to make herself feel better; maybe, maybe it was never meant to be. She sighed and called the waitress,
'Can I have another cup of coffee?' Sofia asked when she heard someone's familiar voice, she turned around to find Asim with his hand up, she blinked at him before looking here and there.
'Hey, you're here?' They both spoke at the same time. Asim got up and sat down on her table, How long have you been sat here?'
'For quite some time. Was meant to meet a friend but he- she never showed up!' Sofia spoke sadly as they both sighed heavily. 'You?'
'I came shopping. I brought you some flowers' He lied handing the yellow roses over to her realising Soap would not be coming. He was hurt, but he understood that something might have cropped up.
'Are you done?' Sofia asked him, he nodded at her.
'Shall we go? Wait, I'll pay.' Asim volunteered, Sofia nodded before excusing herself to go to the bathroom. She went to the person at the till, took out a napkin and wrote on it,
'I'm not upset that you didn't come today, I understand something might have come up. But, it would have been good to finally see you. There was a lot of things I wanted to tell you, a lot of misconceptions I wanted to get rid of...*A big sigh*
I wish I could have supported you and comforted you, I know you're going through so much right now but trust me everything will be fine. Have faith. I will always be here for you Ahsaan.
Until next time, take care of yourself! xoxo.
P.S. This is just in case we failed to recognise each other or if you came later and I wasn't here.'
Sofia folded the napkin and handed it over to the waitress behind the till instructing as to what she should do with it. Sofia was surprised when the waitress handed another note over to her; shocked and excited, she looked around the cafe once more before leaving, she found Asim outside still waiting for the waitress to come to him,
'How about you wait in the car? Here' Asim passed the keys over to her.
'Go inside and pay' Sofia pointed before leaving with the flowers, disappointed yet not so disheartened anymore after receiving the little note; he had come after all.
'Hey, can I pay? Yeah both of the tables' Asim passed the cash over to the waitress, 'Did she come?'
'Yes sir, she just left' the waitress pointed outside, Asim followed her gaze,
'What?' He asked shocked,
'She left this for you' She passed the note over to him, Asim ran out of the shop and stared in all directions, he ignored the waitresses call to take the remaining change, he crazily looked both ways. One path was empty, on the other he could see Sofia's back. He brushed his hair and ran behind her.
-
'Sooo?' Ayaat quizzed Sofia who just shrugged her shoulders and shook her head in a no. Ayaat hit her forehead, Almighty, why are you testing these two as well?' She mentally thought to herself looking up at the ceiling,
'He left me a note' Sofia told her,
'Give it here, omg he wants to meet again' Ayaat jumped up excitedly, Sofia's eyes widened, 'You still haven't read it have you?' Sofia shook her head in a no earning a smack off Ayaat. 'Idiot'
'Ouch bhaji, please' Sofia pouted. Ayaat sat down on the bed and hit her head; what will she do with this girl,
'What's his name?' Ayaat asked her knowingly,
'Bills002' Sofia replied,
'His real name buddhooo' Ayaat teased her,
'Ah'
'ASIM!' Ayaat squealed as he entered her room,
'Okay quieten down meri tufaan' Zain popped his head inside, Asim grinned at Zain's words.
'Thammanna called, you're still going to the holi party right?' Asim asked Ayaat and Sofia,
'Yupp' They both replied in unison.
'Cool' Asim turned around to go placing his hand over Zain's shoulder, they both hi-fived each other and laughed walking out of her room towards the stairs. Asad stood afar and watched, he looked at the message on his phone and stared at Zain's laughing face. He held onto his phone tightly before walking back inside the room in deep thought. He ignored Zoya's calls and went straight to bed.
-
'Come on get ready' Ayaat hurried up pushing Sofia in the room to get changed,
'Oh someone's in a hurry today' Sofia spoke sarcastically remembering the day before.
'Chill out you, Holi is fun! I can't wait to enjoy myself' Ayaat spoke dreamily.
'Ofcourse, you'e very selfish' Pushed Sofia ,
'Hawww? NOOO' Ayaat squeaked, careful stepping out of this room' She looked at Sofia with wide eyes, 'You never know what the boys might have planned outside' She warned as she demonstrated with her hands,
'Oh shut up drama queen' Sofia strutted out of the room, she looked in all directions and gave her the thumbs up.
Ayaat walked out and joined Sofia's side as they both watched Asim and Zain come down the stairs behind each other, each as sleepy as the other. Sofia and Ayaat knuckle touched each other seeing their faces, they tried to contain their laughter.
'Can I use your bathroom?' Asim asked Ayaat, Hassan is inside ours'
'Sure' Ayaat nodded. Everyone looked back hearing a noise; Dilshad had dropped all her pans.
'What happened?' Zain ran towards her,
'Beta, what happened to you? Did someone punch you?' Dilshad asked touching his eyes before bursting out laughing, 'have you looked at your faces?' Dilshad held a pan and asked him to look at the reflection. Zain ran back to the mirror near the front door and looked at himself, his eyes were smeared in black powder, the rest of his face looked like it had all sorts of powders mixed to look like shit. He turned and stared at Sofia and Ayaat,
'Say cheeeseee' Ayaat took a picture before looking at him innocently. Asim burst out laughing,
'Seriously bro, I was too tired to even notice. You look like someone s****ed on your face' Asim laughed.
'Very mature guys' Zain made a face, 'you look worse brother, go take a good look' Zain told him. The girls turned around and took a picture of Asim too, Asim posed for them as they giggled at his poses.
'Eeek stay away, crisp whiteee' Ayaat pointed to her clothes before looking at Asim with warning eyes, 'Happy Holi though Asim' Ayaat brushed past Zain,
'Happy Holi' Zain whispered, Ayaat looked down at his fingers as he brought them out of his pocket, they were painted red. She looked up at him touching the scarf that she tied on her head like a turban; Please understand the message Zain.
'Happy Holi' She whispered back to him with a soft smile before heading towards her parents room. She knocked on their door and entered without waiting for an answer, she looked back at him.
'Oh hello, privacy!' Zoya waved at her as she finished buttoning Asad's kurta,
'Your point is?' Ayaat gave her a blank look, Zoya rolled her eyes while Asad laughed.
'Happy Holi beautiful' Asad kissed Ayaat's forehead, he dipped his finger into a packet of colours and smeared it on her cheek, his hand went over her head wrapped in a white scarf. He looked at her,
'Didn't want my hair to get coloured' Ayaat lied before holding her cheek against his. 'Happy Holi baba' Ayaat smiled at him.
'Oh hello, I'm his wife. I'm the one that should've put it on him first' Zoya breathed out, Ayaat poked her head sideways and looked at her mother,
'And again your point is?' Ayaat asked her again,
'YOU-' Zoya stormed towards her, Asad put his arm out to barricade her from Ayaat, Ayaat rolled her tongue out towards her before painting her hand and bringing it forward, 'NO NO NO' Zoya tried to back up but could not budge from his hold. Ayaat painted her mother's nose with the colours before kissing her forehead,
'Happy Holi AMMI!' Ayaat winked at her father.
'You just wait, wait till you get married to a guy who becomes a house husband, no I'm going to get you married to a cockeyed guy... Just you wait, or else my name isn't Zoya Asad Ahmad Khan' Zoya brushed her nose,
'Oh really, the last I checked my name was Ayaat Asad Ahmad Khan, the daughter of Asad Ahmad Khan. Good luck' Ayaat showed her teeth to her mother and walked out of the room, 'Don't be late guys' She closed the door behind her.
'Where are my keys?' Ayaat asked everyone as they stood outside in the garden.
'I've got it' Asim swung it around his fingers before entering the car, Ayaat watched as Sofia, Zuhair, Hassan, Hussain and Innayah get into her car. 'You make your own way yeah?' Asim blew a kiss at her before driving forward.
'Haww? On my own?' Ayaat faked a tear,
'No, Zain's temporary motorbike' Asim shouted as Ayaat ran behind the car,
'But but but' She pouted,
'Sometime today' Zain revved his motorbike behind her making her jump out of the way,
'I didn't say I'm coming with you' Ayaat folded her arms,
'No worries' Zain moved slightly word,
'Where the hell is your car?' Ayaat shouted behind him making him stop,
'Servicing' He replied, 'and yes out of all days today' He smirked. Ayaat stomped towards him and sat down behind him. 'Hold on tight'
'Please' She spoke sarcastically before hitting her head against his back, 'OWWW' Ayaat yelped. She slowly placed her hand on his lower back,
'Heyy, don't get any ideas yeah' Zain laughed earning a punch on his back, 'tighter Miss delicate, don't want anything happening to you' Zain tensed as he felt her hands gliding on his side before she grabbed the front of his kurta, her head leaned against his back. 'Ready?' He coughed, she nodded behind him. He looked at his mirrors, 'I don't have eyes on the back of my head okay?'
'Shut up before I murder you. Let's go' Ayaat spoke impatiently. Zain sighed, if this was a few weeks back, she would've wanted to cherish every moment they were together, and specially a bike ride. Zain looked at their reflection on a nearby window; picture perfect.
'Yes ma'am' Zain started the motorbike and drove away.
-
'Heyy Thamanna, Happy Holi lovely. Thank you for inviting us, it looks amazing' Ayaat hugged Thammanna.
'It's so good to see you, happy holi to you too and thank you for coming' Thammanna smiled. 'One second I'll be right back, enjoy yourself' She told her before rushing to greet the others. Zain pulled Ayaat towards the colours while she tried to free herself from his grip.
'Zain-' Ayaat faced him while he grabbed the colours from the table; she closed her eyes as he painted her face red. She opened her eyes as they filled with tears, she wiped her cheeks trying to get rid of the colour, he pulled her hand towards him, 'Let GO' She fought him pulling her hand down as he lifted it up to his cheek and brushed her hand over his cheek.
'Ab mein bhi tumhare rang mein rang gaya' Zain smiled letting go of her hand, Ayaat opened her mouth but no words came out. She turned around and walked away from him wiping her tears with the back of her hands.
Ayaat watched as Asim and the gang enjoyed themselves, chasing each other with colours. She faced her parents and smiled seeing them romance amongst the crowd; this was a good day after all. There in the distant stood Zain, leaning against a tree with his arms folded like he does, admiring her. She looked around herself as the noise toned down; she couldn't hear anything but his beating heart. She blushed under his gaze, she couldn't help but smile seeing him grin on the other side; this is what he does to her not being close to her. She was snapped out of her thoughts as some of her college friends grabbed her hand and pulled her towards the rest of her friends who had been drowning each other. She froze as they drained the bucket over her before dragging her towards another area forcing her to dance. She danced slowly wondering why she wasn't enjoying it, she could see him standing there every time she turned. She paused for a moment; you need to stop loving me so much Zain.
'I'll be right back' She whispered to her friends as she slowly walked towards her other friends; male friends to be precise. She looked around for her parents who had disappeared inside; she breathed in and waved at them. They all looked at her weirdly for a moment; she placed her finger on her lips and shook her head side wards.
'You're crazy, you know that?' Anas pulled her into the mixed group knowing she had some plan up her sleeves, he just played along with her.
'I know, why are you so surprised?' Ayaat laughed back as she danced with Anas and his fianc, 'Zahid, I need a favour'
'Anything for you sweetie' Zahid winked at her, he was dancing around her but kept his distance as he respected her.
'They're all drinking bhang, I want you to- ' She moved her eyes,
'What are you trying to prove? I wouldn't agree on normal circumstances but you made me promise. Anything for my little sister' He brushed his hand over her head, Ayaat held her tears in; her friends were amazing. She laughed as Sanayah ran towards her and hugged her tight laughing, they both broke into some bhangra moves. She moved back as Zahid came back with a huge steel glass. She hugged him a thank you before taking the glass to her lips, the next moment had her staring at the white ground in a dazed state. Her head shot towards Zain's furious face, his eyes pierced towards at her friends; his growl low but dangerous. He dragged her body away from the crowd, she reluctantly followed behind him as her protests fell deaf to his ears. Once they got away from the madness, he swung her; Ayaat went flying forward before she looked at him furiously.
'What are you doing?' Zain asked her; hurt and finally ready to seek some answers. His voice came out low, but it was loud enough for her to hear him.
'What am I supposed to do?' Ayaat questioned back as she started sobbing,
'I don't think you should be asking the questions Ayaat' Zain said bitterly staring at her friends. 'If you don't love me, just say it... just say it and get it over with but stop giving me stupid excuses like that to stop loving you' He directed his words at her illness.
'I'll go away from you forever but you, what are you doing?' He asked her again, Ayaat half laughed tilting her head sideways as tears trailed down her cheek.
'That's the problem Zain' Ayaat said defeated, Zain looked at her confused, 'This is all because of you, I just don't know what to do anymore.'
'What?'
'You still don't get it, do you? You have no idea how I'm holding myself together' Ayaat ran forward and grabbed him by his collar, 'Because being around you drives me crazy and... not being around you drives me crazy' She spoke breathless and defeated as she pushed him away, she stepped back and stared at his surprised expressions.
'I hate you Zain, I hate you...' Ayaat's lips quivered, Zain stepped forward and grabbed her by the arms and shook her,
'But I love you' He told her as their faces remained centimetres apart, Ayaat stared above at his face,
'I hate you Zain'
'But I love you Ayaat' Zain stared at her face,
'I love you Zain' Ayaat pressed her tears away, she slowly opened her eyes and admired his face, Zain took in her words before taking her into a bone crushing hug. Ayaat's hands brushed up his back before pulling his hair,
'I love you' She finally breathed out snuggling her face into his chest feeling relieved and at peace.
'You look tired; do you want me to get you a drink?' Asim asked Sofia to which she nodded, Asim walked towards the table with a heavy heart and picked up a glass of juice. He placed his hand inside his pocket and took out some pills and added it into the glass. He turned around and stared at her smiling face; he found his hands on his cheek. He looked at his fingers; was he crying? He shook his head as he slowly came towards her with the glass.
'Ayaat, I love you, I love you so damn much you crazy girl!' Zain cupped her face in tears, he kissed her forehead and hugged her again,
'I love you too' Ayaat whispered back.
His eyes read over the message in his hand, over and over again.
'We will destroy her'
His fury filled eyes stared at Zain hugging Ayaat; he fisted his hands seeing him smile at a group of boys on the other side of the field. His feet found themselves storming towards him, each step shaking the ground warning every one of the storm coming its way...
