Chapter 46
"Without thee what is all the morning's wealth?"
Ashutosh slowly lifted Nidhi's head from his chest to lay her down softly on the pillow. He smiled and sighed when she snuggled under the duvet at the little distraction and smiled burrowing her cheek on the pillow unaware how her husband was watching her mesmerizingly and restraining his urge to kiss her, only to allow her to enjoy her beauty sleep.
It was 6 in the morning Ashutosh got up as per his routine, but was finding hard to leave his bed, his love sleeping beatifically in his bed, he was for the first time in his life disliking to get up, giving a fraught look to the morning sun peeping through the window, he felt like repeating, "Busy old fool, unruly Sun, Why dost thou thus".
He took a deep sigh and came out of his bed, but when his eyes turn back to his wife, he leaned forward and pecked softly at her head taking utmost care not to wake her up and left the room without turning back to look at her.
She's all states, and all princes, I,
Nothing else is.
Princes do but play us; compared to this,
All honor's mimic, all wealth alchemy.
Thou, sun, art half as happy as we,
In that the world's contracted thus.
He wanted to get back to his daily routine and to start his day with a rigorous running routine and work outs in his personal gym that he followed each day of his life without fail. His chiselled, strong and well-groomed body was an artefact of the seasoned pro keep-fit schedule he has followed all his life unfailingly.
After an hour when he was all sweating and panting, he returned to his room to have a bath, he grinned seeing his wife sleeping supine, wiping his face he walked slowly up to her, and watched her fondly standing there with his hands resting on his hips.
After a few more seconds finding the pull difficult to fend off he leaned forward and trailed the seam of her lips with his tongue, she frowned, pursed her lips tightly and pushed him away. He chuckled and caught her arms, holding her hands above her head; he burrowed himself in her neck.
She resisted, "hmm...let me sleep" but he didn't stop that forced her to open her eyes slowly, blurrily after looking around, her eyes stop at her husband's toned body, first she looks at him in wonder then slowly her eyes gleamed, and Ashutosh watched her with a smirk. Her hands rested on his arms involuntarily as if she needed to feel his biceps. He raised his eyebrows and she asked, "What is this? You had gone for a walk?"
Nuzzling her nose, "Like this? No...I did a work out here...and from tomorrow you too are going to join me and run some miles on a treadmill"
"No! I love to run in open"
"Fine...sometimes we can run outside...now let me quench my thirst first"
"What? Stop...Emm"
After releasing her lips he pecked at her lips softly and pulled her up in his arms. Nidhi loved to be in his arms, his fond crushing embrace was heaven's bliss. His arms swathed around her made her feel complete. They stayed like that for a while when Nidhi stirred and asked, "You want to take shower first?"
"Why are you asking?"
"Hmm...Just...you can go then I'll make tea for you"
"Why? Can't we go together?"
"No!"
"Please!!!"
Nidhi comes out of the hug and mock glares at him and he pleads narrowing his eyes. Her eyes pop out she pushes him and swiftly moves towards the restroom shouting from the restroom door, "Now you wait...I'm having shower first".
He grins and shakes his head saying, "No problem doc...We'll be soon sharing our restroom" and with that he moves downstairs to check Baba.
He was having tea with Baba when Nidhi descending the stairs greets, "Good Morning Baba"
Good Morning Beta, Baba answered her with a smile and held her in a side hug. Nidhi asks, "How are you feeling now Baba?"
"Oh! I'm fine...super fine...my kids are here now with me...my son's mornings are bright and smiling...what else do I need now?"
Nidhi and Ashutosh exchange glance that locked their eyes. Ashutosh's eyes were bearing out every word Baba spoke. His eyes were gleaming, and his every cell was beaming and crooning in the joy of some dulcet melody, the blossoming joy he was living through because of his love. He was basking in the afterglow of intimacies he was experiencing for the first time in his life. Even the person seeing or meeting him first time can avow for something breezy in him and how could have father's eyes missed that joy and how could've a father's heart not danced in jubilation seeing his son enjoying the bliss of marriage that he yearned for his son all these years? It was a dream come true for his father.
Seeing his children lost in each other, Dr. Mathur cleared his throat and Nidhi was the first one to break their eye lock. Chiding her husband through a glare she moves to the kitchen to make breakfast for her family. Ashutosh's eyes glint in response, he too excuses himself and moves to freshen up giving a glance towards the kitchen while walking on his way to the room.
The moment he emerges from restroom he gets rooted, drying his hair with a towel his hand freezes at his head. He feels blessed seeing his watch, his handkerchief, his socks and wallet ready on the table. He always kept his things in their specified places. He never experienced this even as a kid, though when he heard his class fellows telling how their mothers would take care of everything for them...he only used to sigh, not that he was brought up with some disparity but there was something lacking.
Baba indulged him a lot but there had been something amiss. Baba would order Kaka to keep everything ready and intact in their respective places, and he was used to only to that routine till date. Kaka would stuff his things at the respective places in the cupboard, and he would get his things whenever he needed. But what would he call to this? Something he still can't name but feel, the feeling of some emptiness being filled, slowly and gradually. He never experienced such a feeling in his life as his heart was sousing slowly in. He was experiencing the messianic comfort. May be only a feminine touch can arise and douse such feelings.
Not knowing Nidhi was there getting his clothes from the closet he notices a movement behind the open doors of the cupboard. He walks slowly up to her and back hugs her, swaying her in his arms, he grounds her and burrows his face in the crook of her neck and breathes taking in a long breath. Holding her tightly in his arms, he smells her deeply and remains hiding his face in her neck. Nidhi finds that strange after many long minutes, she slowly ruffles his hair and asks, "Not going to hospital?"
He didn't answer. Her brow puckers not getting any response from him but allows him to stay the way he wanted. Waiting for him to move when he didn't, she asks again, "what happened?"
Her words stir Ashutosh, and he comes out of her neck. He turned her and pulled her in a bear hug and rocked her in his arms. After holding her protectively...he could only mumble a choked "Thank you" that alarmed Nidhi, she pushed him away to look at his face.
His face evincing the myriad of emotions his heart was brimming with, he looks into her eyes and shakes his head but her fond fixed glance forced him to ask pointing towards the table, "what is this?"
She turned her eyes to look where he was pointing and construing what he means she answered, "I'm not going to do this always...and you'll have to help yourself to get dressed as well or should I say as you used to do...I can't help you always"
With his tongue in his cheek...he looks sternly at her...holding her by her waist he pulls her to himself and asks looking into her eyes...his hands caressing her curves, "What did you say? I want to hear again"
Feeling the tickle she tries to move out, but he holds her quickly plastered to him. Nidhi smiles and mumbles "take care of your towel"
Trailing her jaw bone he murmurs "you think I really care?...I wrap this around just for you...otherwise I won't mind coming out without...and raises his eyebrow looking at her"
Bearing his slap and tickle she answers "Trust you for that...I know how shameless my hubby is"
He chuckles "Oh really! You know that...thank you...now repeat your words...I want to hear again"
His lips travel around her neck, and she manages to utter, "Stop it...you are not getting late?"
In a groovy voice he answers, "No I'm not... and I'm not going to stop until you repeat your words"
Nidhi gripped his shoulders to stop herself from falling, and he continued relentlessly. Feeling her saree fended off, she gasps, "Ashutosh!"
"Hmm"
"You know where all this is leading us to?"
"You want it...don't you?"
"No!"
He stops and stares her with a smirk, their eyes were gleaming with passion, he leans to pick her up in his arms but his towel loosens, and he had to grab his towel and Nidhi suppressing her laugh for a few seconds, bursts into laughter.
Ashutosh gives her a sidelong glance, in a jiffy he opens his towel and brings her in, wrapping them both together. Nidhi realising what he has done, gives him a stunned look, and he pulls her closer and whispers, "Now let me see...how you are going to move out."
He makes her to walk a few steps towards the couch and when she resists he asks, "You opened my towel without any reason?"
Realising he has sensed her mischief her eyes pop out but she answers, "The towel wasn't tucked in properly...not my fault"
He holds his tongue in his cheek and looks at her intensely...seeing him smirking, she quickly murmurs, "sorry" and hides her face in his chest.
"Nidhi you are saved just because time is not right" Ashutosh answers and she giggles hiding her face "Nevertheless, I'm not going to settle the score now anyway...but this remains an obligation on me...and I'll be too happy to oblige you doc...a promise"
She smiles in response, looking at him, and mumbles, "I'm sorry"
He stares her with a smirk and answers, "Nothing can stop me now...not even your apologies...be prepared"
Nidhi pecks at his cheek and narrows her eyes saying, "Please"
"That I'll see later...but what have you decided are you going to repeat your words?"
She pouts and gives a sidelong glance and mutters, "I said I'm not going to do this always"
"Really? Come again"
She stares at him unblinkingly and he bends forward to dissolve her pout. When the need for air makes them to move apart...she places her head on his chest...her cheek touching his bare chest...she hugs him tight muttering, "This I would love to do always, anytime until my last breath"
His hands holding the ends of towel creep forward and his arms squeeze her in, expressing wordlessly how much she is cherished and needed by him.
After sometime Nidhi was straightening his tie and his eyes were fixed on her face, "Hmm...all done! You are ready for the show Sir"
He smiles enchantingly as if he woke up from a beautiful dream. Nidhi asks, "What? Come on now...have your breakfast"
When she moves he catches her and pulls her in his arms asking, "How am I going to work now?"
Nidhi chuckles, "Why? What happened?"
He sighs and mumbles, "You won't understand...you only know to steal my sanity and now have left me to suffer in helplessness"
"What did I do? Shall I go back?"
He squeezed her in his arms, "Don't even dare to repeat those words? And what is this? Are you going to hospital in this attire?...so decked up...wearing all these bangles? Where is my Nidhi?"
"What is wrong in this? This is how a newly wed should look... Don't you like this?"
"Hmm...newlywed? But husbands don't like to see their wives draped in...his hands start to fondle her and she mock punches him."
Nidhi was wearing a plain navy blue silk saree having a golden border. She didn't miss the gleam in his eyes when he was having tea with Baba and saw her descending the stairs.
"Stop it! Don't blame me. If you get late"
"But why you are not changing?"
"I'm not working today...not for a few more days"
"What???...a shocked expression...how am I going to live a whole day without you?"
"Like husbands do...all husbands do not have the privilege to have their wives as colleagues as well"
"But I have! And I want my Nidhi back...you are turning into so...so...typical"
"What typical?"
"Nothing! I'm leaving" Sulking he turns to leave but Nidhi stops him and hugs him...pecking at his heart she answers, "Dadi Bua wanted us to visit temple...I told her you can't come...but I'll have to go and I want to stay at home for a few days...to get accustomed to this new life and with my new home"
"This home was always yours...How are you going?"
"My hubby is going to drop me"
He chuckles and holds her close to his heart, she asks, "You really want me to change?"
He pecks her lips and shakes his head saying, "your husband is jealous...he doesn't want anyone else to see you like this." She pecks him in response and together they leave the room.
"First you are going to have your breakfast"
Descending the stairs, Ashutosh answers, "I'm getting late Nidhi"
"No! You're not going to skip your breakfast, and I want you here at lunch as well"
Baba and Hiraman Kaka smile hearing Nidhi's authoritative tone and Baba stares at Ashutosh with a smirk that irritates Ashutosh, and he asks, "What?"
Baba: Nothing! What did I say? Can't I smile Hiraman?
Ashutosh shakes his head and grabs the newspaper waiting for Kaka to serve him breakfast, but his eyes gleam when he saw Nidhi serving him the breakfast, and he loses all his interest in the paper no matter how much he liked all the things Nidhi was doing for him but he disliked it at the same time. Giving her a fond glance, he holds her hand and makes her to sit next to him, "Have your breakfast Nidhi...I can manage."
"I know you can manage...but let me do...she adds mumbling...this is my job" she takes the bread loaf from his hand and spreads butter on it. Ashutosh's eyes gleam hearing her mumble; he gives up as he couldn't respond seeing Baba watching them smilingly and fondly.
After he drops her at verma house, he moves to the hospital. Dadi Bua was ready, waiting around for Nidhi. She feels elated to see her grand daughter dressed like a newlywed. After welcoming her, she quickly orders Chote sarkar to bring the things needed for prayer and they leave for the temple. They were on the pathway when Anji's car stops near verma house and they stay put and wait for her to get off. Anji and Nidhi hug each other and Anji exclaims, "Thank god Nidhi I saw you here...actually I wanted to invite you and jiju for dinner but I thought I should ask you first"
"Anji I'm free...I'm not working for a few days so I've no problem...but can't say about your jiju...I'll ask him first"
"Don't you think I should go and invite him personally?"
Nidhi shrugs her shoulders, "Your choice...no need to be so formal...you can call him"
"No I want to invite him in person"
Dadi bua butts in, "yes beta you should personally go and invite him...after all he is your jiju"
Nidhi shakes her head hearing Dadi Bua's words and turns to Anji, "Okay! Do let me know if he accepts the invitation"
Anji smiles, "Yes I will...come I'll drop you at temple"
Dadi bua butts in again, "why drop? You should also come and pay your obeisance"
Anji agrees and together they leave for the temple.
Dadi Bua was still busy paying her obeisance to the deity; Anji and Nidhi were waiting for her. Sitting on the stairs of the temple, Anji asks her, "so what were you asking for?...you were so deeply engrossed saying your prayers"
Nidhi feeling the serenity in the midst of divinity, answers, "I only thanked the lord for what I've been blessed with and want to stay as blessed all my life"
Anji smiles hearing her words and checks her phone that she put on silent mode. Finding Dr. Rangnath's missed call; she calls and informs him that she is coming there to invite Dr. Ashutosh. Dr. Rangnath was answering her call with a reserve, and Anji had to ask, "Where are you? Are you not in your cabin?" Coming to know he is in Dr. Ashutosh's cabin, she requests him to pass on his phone to him and asks, "jiju can I come to invite you for dinner?"
"You need to come here to invite me? You can come to meet me anytime but needn't be so formal"
"Okay great! Are you coming then?"
He chuckles, "No Anji...I'll discuss with Dr. Rangnath... and will let you know...you are not going to cook dinner...are you?"
Anji smiles "Next time jiju...but today you are coming"
"How can I say no to my sister-in-law?"
"Great...Okay bye...wait! Would you like to talk to your wife?"
Despite having a few doctors in his cabin and maintaining the austerity he was famous for he couldn't help ask her, "Is she there with you?"
"Yes we are at the temple waiting for Dadi Bua" with that she passes on her phone to Nidhi, and next Ashutosh hears the voice that never fails to tickle his heart. He answers Nidhi with a "hmm" and that was enough for Nidhi to construe that he was busy. She responded with, "Do come for lunch...I'm waiting for you" she hears one more "Hmm" in response and wraps up the call.
Rangnath was leaving but thought to remind Ashutosh once again about dinner. He was on his way to his cabin when he saw Dr. Ashutosh and Dr. Malika together moving out from the hospital. He quickened his steps to catch them and reaching there he interrupted them, "Excuse me Sir, Are you leaving?...I thought to remind you again...And I'm glad Dr. Malika is also here"
"Yes Dr. Rangnath we are leaving and we'll meet at the fixed venue in an hour"
Malika thanks Rangnath for inviting her for dinner and takes their leave. Ashutosh watches her go and turns to Rangnath, "Thank you for inviting Dr. Malika"
"Come on Sir...you needn't thank me, and you could have invited her on your own...there was no need to ask me"
"Yes Dr. Rangnath I thought that would be a nice change for her and suggested only because I know we are a family now"
Dr. Rangnath smiles, "Thank you Sir...I think we should move now"
Ashutosh nods and they both get into their respective cars.
Ashutosh and Nidhi leave a bit early as they had to pick Dr. Malika on the way. Dr. Malika was not ready, and they had to wait for her, outside her apartment. Ashutosh grabs Nidhi's hand and caressing her hand; he asks, "What is my love pondering on?"
"Hmm...Nothing serious"
He pulls her to him and asks, "And what is that not so serious thing...that my life is so engrossed in?"
"You think you did right...I mean inviting Dr. Malika to this dinner... by the way she doesn't seem so blue...I did talk to her and she is fine"
"I have known her for so long Nidhi and I can read her better"
Nidhi extricates herself and answers in a, "Hmm"
"I think she is in an empathic situation...going through an empathic failure that carries depression as a component...she is not in her usual self Nidhi... I can feel that"
"And you think she'll feel better seeing us together...I mean"
"Hmm...I understand what you mean...taking a deep sigh...I didn't think about that...I thought if she would come out and spend time with us...she would feel better"
Nidhi saw Malika coming, she pulls her hand and alerts Ashutosh, "Now behave yourself...Dr. Malika is coming"
Ashutosh pursing his lips gives her a sidelong look saying, "That's a hard price to pay"
