Chapter 15
Her heart broke seeing him this way. She knew the anger was only from the outside. He was breaking on the inside. He was cursing his luck at this minute and crying over the loss he had suffered. She knew he was not in any better state on the inside than she was, if anything it was only worse. At that minute it was tough to decide who was more emotional, who was hurting more and who wanted to get over and done with this quicker.
Jai- Bani I want an answer. God dammit I want a lot of answers, so lets just start with the basics. Why did you leave, and like this.
Bani- (whispered between sobs) Jai you are hurting me
Jai- and what about the hurt you have given me, which can and I am pretty sure is irreparable.
Bani- what are you talking about Jai, it wasn't meant to be this way was it?
Jai- it sure wasn't, (with a slight tear in his eye) forever and always, remember?
Bani- (finding the ground again) no, I meant, it wasn't meant to have to holding this for so long, we were kids Jai, it was just a passing phase.
Jai- I don't know about you, but it wasn't just a passing phase for me, if it was I wouldn't be here, thirteen years later, still finding closure.
And seeing the way you are, at this very minute, it being a passing phase for you, seems highly doubtable too.
Jai- so Bani tell me, was it JUST a passing phase?
He looked directly into her eyes while asking this, the right amount of emphasis on the right words.
She just turned away. She was ready for a face-to-face, but for this, this she hadn't dreamed of in her wildest nightmares too. Yes, this is what it was for her, a nightmare. Something that could and would unveil her deepest and darkest secrets. This would ruin everything she had built in the past thirteen years! Her small family, her home, her life, everything seemed to be slipping out of her hands. What did Jai want to hear? How she ruined her life and as she knows now, his as well? How her life had never been the same after posting that letter to Jai? How she dreaded this very minute, everyday of her life? What exactly did he want to know?
Jai- Bani, I am waiting here… enough of silence, now its time for some words…
Bani- Jai what do you want to hear, tell me, I'll say that to you.
Jai- I have been saying stuff I want to hear to myself since the past thirteen years, let's hear what you've got to say.
Bani- There was this other man who came into my life and I realized you and me weren't meant to be.
Jai- and…
Bani- there is no and…this is it.
Jai- and you got married to him is it Bani?
Bani- no…
Jai- (slyly) oh there was a third too, impressive
Bani just looked down. Jai was disgusting her. So Bani dear, how many were there in all, or did it stop at three? And whose son is Jyot then, or aren't you sure? C'mon Bani, lets hear about your adventures…
Bani – Jai stop it…please.
Jai- Stop what? What am I doing? Is the honesty hurting you? But Bani seriously lets do some 'catching up'
Bani couldn't take it any longer and slapped Jai right across his face. The impression of her palm didn't make a pretty picture on his right cheek. He was in disbelief for a minute and then right back to his sense. Bani was crying profusely now. She didn't want to do what she had, but then he had left her with very little choice. How could he bring her son in the middle of this? And how could he go on about her as if she was a characterless woman? He didn't know anything and hence had no right to say anything or pass judgments about her, it wasn't done!
Bani just fell onto the floor crying, tears didn't seem to stop. With her back touching the back wall and her hands on her head, she didn't know what to do. Jai just stood there, with no motion and just looked at her. He knew he hadn't said the best of things required at this moment, but then what wrong had he said? Wasn't it Bani who asked for it? A man has a limit to his patience right? But nothing he could say could pacify him after seeing her like that. She looked like a little kid whose favorite toy had just been snatched and broken, all in front of her eyes. He wanted to wrap her in his arms, but he couldn't, he wouldn't.
Bani- It's your kid.
Jai just a heard a faint voice. He was too engrossed in his thoughts that he had cut himself from the surrounding sounds.
Jai- did you say something?
Bani- Jyot, he is your kid, your son Jai.
