The sphinx asks a riddle and attacks the person only if he/she fails.

I give you a few chances,

if you give me what I need,

you pass or else you fail.

She gave Harry three options, which I mentioned as chances. The first was he could just remain silent and go in another way, Another one being if he would answer, she will move away. The last option said he answered incorrectly, she would attack him.

I am calm and I may smile, 

It is said in the book the she was calm and repeated the riddle for Harry, a few times. She also smiled at him.

But I annoy people at the same time.

There are sphinxes who guard vaults at Gringotts and they obviously annoy the people who want to get their valuables but are not so good at riddles.

Can you guess who I am?
