Onam is the very own festival of Kerala. Irrespective of cast or creed, all Keralites celebrate Onam. Its origin is quite Legendary. As the legend goes,Once upon a time, in Kerala, there ruled a King named Mahabali. His reigm was the best. There were no lies, no cheating, no poverty, all people were equals. Lord Indra got jealous of him and requested Mahavishnu to help him. Mahavishnu , born as Vamana, went and asked Mahabali for three feet of Land. So generous was Mahabali that he agreed. But With his first two steps, Vamana measured the entire universe and there was no place left for his third foot. So Mahabali showed his head. Vamana sent him to 'Pathala'the lowerworld. But he had granted a wish to Mahabali. He was allowed to come back to Earth once in a year to see his people. Onam is celebrated as the return day of Mahabali.

The celebrations of onam begins ten days before the actual day. There will be floral decorations in front of every house, every body will get new dresses, special Banana chips will be made, so many cultural events will be there, swings will be made in each home and a grand feast will be there on the onam day. Boat races are a speciality of Onam. All in all it is a great celebration time.
