"I've not even met Aditya, and you are expecting chemistry?" quips Sonakshi Sinha just before the shoot. We panic. So does our lensman Rohan Shrestha. We capture SONAKSHI SINHA and Aditya Roy Kapur at her newly renovated bungalow Ramayan'. From being acquaintances, the two young actors gradually begin chatting up and engage in playful repartee. We shoot on the terrace, and the view from the11th floor is breathtaking. Watermelon juice, scrambled eggs and Sonakshi's jukebox, set the right mood. Amidst all the chatter and banter, the two weave a beautiful love story on camera. Pooja Sharma shares her experience.

How was it coming together with Aditya Roy Kapur for a photoshoot?
It went off surprisingly well. I didn't expect anything because I don't know him. I barely bumped into him at award functions. We hit it off instantly and I think that shows in the pictures as well. We've got some really nice shots.

So, if you're offered a film with him, would you like to take it up? Maybe Aashiqui 3...
(Laughs) I don't know about Aashiqui 3. But of course, I'd like to work with Aditya. When he walked in, the first thing I noticed was, how tall he is! And that I can wear heels and still look short in front of him.

You're looking fitter than ever. How do you feel when you look back?
I feel great because of how far I've come. Even when I was on the heavier side, I never hated myself. I was okay in that skin and I'm feeling good in this skin as well. It's not like I as a person within has changed. But of course, I've been getting a lot of attention, be it for my wardrobe or for the weight loss. It's nice in a way. I'd like to take it in a positive spirit.

As for your wardrobe is concerned, who would you like to credit for the same?
I give credit to my entire team, especially, Sakshi Mehra (stylist)who was my college friend. In fact, when we were studying fashion designing at SNDT (college), I was the studious one and would top all my classes. She was the one who would get all her clothes done by cheating, get other people to do her homework. She would make me draw her illustrations. Now, I think she is the best stylist ever. She knows what kind of choices I'd make when it comes to style department. Since I've also lost little weight, a lot of wardrobe options have opened up for me. Clothes start looking good on a fitter body.

Who inspires you in the fashion department?
I don't really idolise anyone when it comes to the fashion department. Comfort is my priority when it comes to dressing up. If I'm not comfortable in something I wear, it will show on my face and my behaviour. I don't like that taking away from my personality or who I am.

An actor's style quotient you admire?
I think Deepika Padukone dresses up very well. She has such a good body that it's so easy for her to carry anything she wears. She has a very chilled-out sense of style. She won't let the clothes rule over her personality. It's the other way round.

And from the male actors?
I think Akshay Kumar is very stylish. He is so athletic and tall that whatever he wears looks really good on him. And of course, Hrithik Roshan is another style icon.

You play a boxer in Holiday. So while getting your act right, did you punch anyone on the sets?
(Laughs aloud) No thankfully, I didn't punch anyone on the sets. It was
quite fun though. I was shown the moves and nuances by Akshay sir
who was present on the sets, which made it easy for me and it looked
quite realistic.

So, are there times when you feel like knocking someone out while shooting a film?
All the time! (Laughs) There's one person daily who I feel like knocking out. But I haven't because I've that much control over my anger and emotions. So I just knock them out in my head.

How did you prepare for the role? Did you take cues from a boxer?
Not at that point of time. There was a girl, who I was boxing with, in one of the sequences in the film. She was a professional boxer. Then as I said, there was Akshay sir, who told me on how to get the body language of a boxer right. In fact, I even started boxing recently. I'm really enjoying it. You saw the punching bag on my terrace, no? (Laughs). It's a good exercise and it keeps me fit.

Even your look is pretty different in Holiday than your previous films? Was it a conscious decision to break your image?
It wasn't a conscious decision. I've always said that I don't sign films based on how I'm going to look in them. It's always about the entire film as a package. It's about my role, the script. My character in the film is a young, college-going urban girl who's also a boxer. So of course, I've to dress like the character and I can't look like how I've looked in my other films.

So, are you now bored of sporting Indian outfits?
Not really. I'm not bored at all. It's just that recently I've been experimenting a lot with the kind of choices I make. And everybody knows what I look like in sari. (Giggles) I'm just deviating a bit. I'm not bored of it at all.

Are we ever going to see you going ultra-glam if a role demands?
I don't think glamour is about wearing skimpy outfits. I've always said this. Less is more. The lesser you reveal, the more you leave it to imagination. That's at least my way of looking at it.

Most of your films have been mainstream potboilers. Even the feel and look of your characters were similar? Why have you been doing similar kind of films?
I enjoy being part of the so-called masala or commercial films. Of course, I'd love to do another film likeLootera. I think the way people are looking at films is also changing. There are better roles being written for women. In fact, I'm going to make an announcement of a woman-oriented film soon, which I might be part of. So today, I'm doing Tevar, Action Jackson, and Holiday as well. I like to maintain that balance. It's about enjoying your work and loving what you do. After Lootera, no one is saying that I can't act.

You've been part of south remakes. Even your upcoming films are south remakes. Considering they've been hits down south, is this your formula for success?
Action Jackson is not a south remake. It's by a south director. It's just a co-incidence. They have been good films which is why I agreed to be part of them. If it was a remake of a bad film, I wouldn't have said yes. No one will remake a bad film in the first place. You're catering to different audience. The Hindi-speaking audience might not have seen the south version of the film. So for them, it's a new film.

But don't you agree there's an overdose of south remakes in the Hindi film industry?
I think that's happening. There are always phases where different trends come in. I agree, in the last few years, the trend of remakes was the rage. But again, that is also slowing down a bit and people are coming up with original scripts and women-oriented films.

Do you get perturbed when critics tag your films mindless and run-of-the-mill?
Not at all! The critics are a very small and negligible part of the audience. Everyone has an opinion today. It is okay to voice it.

And do you advocate this kind of cinema? Do you actively go out and watch them?
Yes, those are the kind of films that I love to see. So I love to be part of them.

Besides your own films, which other potboilers have you enjoyed watching?
There was Housefull, which I find funny every time I see it on television. Main Tera Hero was really funny. I went crazy laughing in the theatre. And that's what you look for at the end of the day, entertainment, right? You want to forget all your troubles. For me, at least, I love to laugh. I just want to go out there and have a good time.

As an actor, isn't it fatiguing and monotonous to be doing films which are similar in nature?
No. They might be similar in nature, but the content is very different. You're working with different directors and co-actors. It doesn't feel like that on the inside. It may look like that to you on the outside. People like to put things together and slot them in a certain way. For me, as a person, working in those films is a different experience. Every film is a different experience.

What puts you off or irks you about your job?
Incompetent people! If you're there for a certain job, you better do it well. And
I hate unpunctuality. I think it's very easy to be on time.

You've been approached to be part of a Rajinikanth project. Have you given the film a green signal?
Yes, I have. It will be my Diwali release. I'm really excited. The film will mark my debut in the south. There was a lot of speculation. Now, when I'm finally making my debut, I'm very proud that it's with the one and only Rajinikanth. I'm looking forward to meeting him. I'd met him long ago when I'd gone to Chennai with my family. I'd like to see his reaction because he has known me as a friend's daughter and now to be doing a film together is really exciting. I know his daughters, Aishwarya and Soundaraya very well. They have always been supportive of me and told me that they are proud of the work I'm doing.

You were recently given the worst actor Golden Kela Award for your role in R...Rajkumar. But you took it sportingly and even took a dig at it by posting a picture with a banana on Twitter. Do these things bother you?
Not at all! If it was something believable,I would think about it.

Do you agree your performance was bad in the film?
No. I think it was great. It was a damn good performance. Ask Prabhu sir.

Wouldn't you want to take up more performance-driven roles or woman-centric films?
As I mentioned, I will be making an announcement soon. I'm on the verge of signing on the dotted lines. I only speak about my films when I sign them. It's a woman-centric film and it will be kick ass.

Have you seen Queen? How did you find Kangana Ranaut's performance?
I loved it and even Tweeted about it. Vikas Bahl and Kangana did a fabulous job. The entire cast was perfect.

From your contemporaries, who inspires you?
From my contemporaries, no one! Sorry to say this but I don't get inspired by anyone. I don't really look at what anyone else is doing. I'm in my own bubble. I'm in my own world, minding my own business. So, to be inspired by anyone at this point of time is too early to say.

Considering an actress' screen life is lesser vis--vis a male actor's, do you ever feel the need to do as much as work possible?
I've done more films than any of my contemporaries. I'm only doing this because I enjoy it so much. Truly, I'm someone who believes there's time and place for everything. The minute I feel I'm not enjoying what I'm doing, I will run away from here.

Kareena Kapoor, on Koffee with Karan, said being a housewife would make for an alternate career choice for you. Do you think it's okay to take digs at fellow actors? Where should one draw the line?
I've gotten over it and everybody should. Everybody has an opinion. I think whatever people say about me, I turn it around and take it in a positive way. So it's fine. I'm okay with it.

Your brother is putting together a project. How's the film shaping up? Are you part of it?
They were putting together a film to produce. They're still in the initial stages, meeting people, and finalising the script. The process is on.

You'd mentioned in an interview, "Arjun (Kapoor) is cordial with everybody. He is not overtly friendly, but he is a very chilled out guy...," What do you mean by overtly friendly?
He's not serious. He's quite jovial. He's got a good sense of humour. But it's not like he's all over the place, interfering in everyone's business. In spite of Tevar being his dad's film, it would have been easy for someone to throw his weight around and throw tantrums, but none of that happened. He has treated this film like any of his other film. It's really refreshing to see that.

So do you have complaints that he is not too friendly?
I'm not saying he is not friendly. We get along very well. I'm just saying he is not all over the place.

You're being trained by Shahid's trainer, Abbas. So, is Shahid also responsible for the motivation and the new look?
Well I met Abbas while I was shooting R... Rajkumar. He used to train Shahid. I started working out since November. I remember when we were shooting, and he used to finish his action scenes. My room was just a few steps away from the gym. Every time I used to see these guys in the gym, I used to wonder, aren't these guys tired? They worked all day and did action sequences, and are still in the gym. That's when I started feeling guilty. So what's my excuse for not going? That's when I told Abbas to train together. He was really helpful even at that point of time. He would advice me on what to eat and what to refrain from eating. He would correct me when my form was wrong in the gym. I found him a nice guy and decided to workout with him. The motivation came when I would see Shahid working out after a hard day at work. But the rest of it, after that, to take it forward was Abbas.

We've read the two of you even train together?
No, we don't. Where's the time? Everyone is living their own lives.

And what about the reports of Shahid and you seeing each other? Where does Shahid stand in your life?
No, I'm not dating Shahid Kapoor. I should put it on a tape recorder or I should tattoo that on my head. (Laughs)

Are you guys good friends?
Yes. We've always got along very well. People have seen that. I just find it funny; while we were shooting and promoting the film, no one spoke about it. Now, when the film is over, and I barely get to see him, people are saying I'm dating him.

What attracts you to Shahid as a person?
I think he is very honest and a real person which is very rare to find. He is chilled-out and easy to get along. I think anyone would get along with him.

Would you like to pair up with Shahid again on screen?
Yes, why not?

From your contemporaries, some are in a relationship and some have dated co-actors in the past? Is it that Sonakshi Sinha has never dated an actor or for that matter anyone in the past?
Of course, I've been in relationships, but not with my co-actors. It just complicates things. If today, you're with someone, and tomorrow, you've had a bad break-up, you won't work with the person ever again in your life. What's the point? It's good to have a professional relationship with the people you work, and not mix the two. That's one funda I've got sorted in
my head.

So, it doesn't mean that you've always been single?
No. I've been in a relationship and my family knew about it. But in the past few years, I've not been in one because I've been working round the clock. Everything has a time and place. When it has to happen, it will happen. It's not like I'm stopping it. I would like to be in love. I love being in love. But it's just not happened yet.

When you have nothing to praise about your co-star, say this...

"He is chilled-out and easy to get along."
