sakhar puda means packet of sugar..literally...I've attended lots of sakhar pudas and let me tell u, there is definitely a ring exchange . Not only that , there is also introduction of the to be bride and groom to all the immediate family members. The bride is first given the sari, jewelry and then the ring exchange takes place . Then the family members give each other the packet of sugar and other sweets. Atleast that's what happened in my friend's sakhar puda./engagement.

Of course don't know what the CVs will do as they have invented a new trend in Maharashtrian weddings. They showed Vitthal giving money as Shagun to Sammy , but there is no shagun ritual in Maharashtrians, and definitely no money is exchanged, even token.
