PART NINE

Shlok went inside Niranjan's room to have a talk with him. Varad and Sojal exchanged glances wondering what was wrong with Niranjan. Aastha saw Anjali worried. She went to Anjali and placed her hand on Anjali's shoulder assuring her that everything will be fine and she would always be with Anjali. No one dared to go in and see what was happening. "Hope Shlok doesn't tell Baba anything about Jyoti Tai..." thought Aastha as she waited impatiently for Shlok to come out. After a few minutes, Shlok came out. Aastha and Anjali looked curiously at him expecting him to say something related to his conversation with Niranjan. Shlok looked at Aastha silently and walked to their bedroom. Anjali and Aastha were confused as well as worried. "Don't worry Aai... I will go check what happened. We will figure out everything, don't worry...!" Aastha assured Anjali and walked to the bedroom behind Shlok.

Shlok was standing there staring at the wall. Aastha just prayed that things were not out of control and went in. She saw Shlok was worried for some reason. Aastha went ahead and placed her hand on his shoulder. "Shlok... everything alright?" she asked hesitantly.

"Pata nahi Baba ko kya ho gaya hai..." said Shlok, "why is Baba acting so weird? I am unable to understand anything...!!"

Aastha wanted to know what conversation did the father-son have. So she said, "Didn't you ask Baba? What did he say?!" Aastha tried to take out everything from Shlok.

"I did... I asked him, but he didn't tell anything clearly. Why has he changed so suddenly?! His eyes were red... His smile was gone... Something was bothering him, I know!! I know Aastha, something was troubling him. Something serious has happened. I had never seen Baba so pale and helpless. Pata nahi Baba ko kiski nazar lag gayi hai..." said Shlok. He was sad.

Aastha wanted to know more. "Shlok, aap ne Baba ko Jyoti Tai ke baare mein toh nahi bataya na? Hope you didn't say anything about Jyoti Tai...!" said Aastha waiting for a reply.

"Ofcourse not Aastha!! Baba khud itne pareshaan lag rahe hain, main unhein aur pareshaani kaise de sakta hoon?" said Shlok and Aastha felt relieved. Shlok continued, "And you have told me not to tell about Jyoti to anyone now... right?"

Aastha nodded with a smile. "Okay, you sit here and take the medicine. I will come in a moment" said Aastha as she turned to leave. She wanted to talk to Anjali.

Shlok held her hand to make her stay. "Aastha," he said, "shayad Baba ro rahe thay...! I think he was crying... That's why his eyes were red. I had never seen Baba crying till date. But today..." Shlok paused as his throat became dry. Aastha could feel what Shlok was going through. She sat beside him, keeping her hand on his. Shlok further told Aastha, "He suddenly asked me whether I was able to forget Swati."

Aastha missed a beat. Her grip on Shlok's hand loosened unintentionally. Shlok felt it. He looked at Aastha. He could see her beautiful eyes becoming wet. He made her hold his hand as he placed his other hand on top of hers. "I know all this is difficult for you... probably more difficult for you than it is for me..." Aastha didn't say anything. Shlok was silent too.

Aastha wanted to know what happened next. "Phir... phir kya kaha aap ne...?" she asked. What did you say then?

Shlok recalled his conversation with his Baba as he narrated it to Aastha...

"Swati ko bhool jaao beta... Move on in life now..." said Niranjan.
"Main Swati ko kaise bhool sakta hoon Baba... How can I forget her...?!!" Shlok's eyes watered. "Meri... meri aankhon ke saamne... woh marr gayi Baba...! Aur main... main kuchh nahi kar saka...!!" said Shlok. She died in front of my eyes, and I couldn't do anything...!! "Kaash... kaash main bhi uske saath hi marr gaya hota...!!" said Shlok. I wish I too had died with her...!!

Niranjan was shocked at this.
"Shlok!! Yeh tum kya keh rahe ho mere bachche...!!" exclaimed Niranjan as his eyes became wet. "Phir aisa kabhi mut kehna... Don't say it ever again!!!"
"Baba, if you were not here, either I would have left the home, or I would have made Mrs. Agnihotri leave!!!" said Shlok in anger. "It is just because of you that Mrs. Agnihotri and I are still staying under one roof...!!!"
These words pricked Niranjan. He knew very well that he was the one responsible for everything that had happened. He looked at Shlok. Moving his pamls gently over Shlok's face he said, "Mera bachcha... Kya halat bana li hai apni... See what you have made of yourself...!!"
Shlok was confused. "Baba?!! Kya ho gaya hai aap ko? Any problem? Tell me... I will..."

Niranjan interrupted saying, "No beta... No problem...! Go, take rest!! You need some!!"
Shlok knew something was wrong. But he came out of the room confused and here he was talking to Aastha.

Aastha felt good that there was nothing to worry about the conversation Shlok had with Niranjan. But she was surely hurt to know that Shlok wasn't able to forget Swati. She rubbed gently on Shlok's arm consoling him. Somewhere deep inside her heart she knew that Shlok loved her.

"Shlok, don't worry... We will together solve all the problems... Okay? Sab theek ho jaayega..." Aastha tried to make Shlok feel better.

"Do you really think everything will be fine one day?!!" asked Shlok.

Aastha smiled and nodded. "Yes, I know it!! And that day will come soon...!! Dekh lena...!!"

Shlok hugged her. She hugged him back and then gently pushed him away saying, "Okay, now take the medicines and have some sleep...!!" she said as she got up to leave.

"Where are you going?!!" asked Shlok quickly.

"I will come back in a moment... You take the medicines till then...!!" said Aastha.

Shlok didn't want her to leave. He just wanted her to stay by his side. He frowned. "Come soon...!!" he said.

"Main yun gayi aur yun aayi...!!" said Aastha as she went out.

Aastha searched for Anjali and found her in the kitchen along with Sojal. She went in. Anjali saw her and was curious to know what conversation took place between Shlok and Niranjan. She immediately said to Sojal, "Sojal, you go now... Aastha has come, she will help me! You go and see whether Kavya has completed her homework." Sojal was surprised. She felt something odd. She just stayed at her place, not sure whether to leave or stay. Aastha then said, "Yes Vahini... I will help Aai with the preparation...!!" Sojal was more surprised. "Vahini?!! Aai?!! How is everything changing so suddenly?!! Oh God...!! Mera sarr chakra raha hai...!!" thought Sojal. She nodded with a smile and left the kitchen.

As soon as Sojal left, Anjali turned to Aastha anxiously. Aastha looked around to confirm no one was listening and told her everything. Anjali sighed in relief. But she felt bad for Aastha. She could understand what Aastha must be feeling when Swati was talked about everytime. Anjali said, "Aastha, beta I know this is a very difficult phase for you... But please be with Shlok... He needs you..!" pleaded Anjali. Aastha assured Anjali that she would never leave Shlok alone. Anjali blessed Aastha. Aastha then told Anjali that she must leave as Shlok must be waiting for her. Aastha knew he needed her through this bad phase of life.

Shlok took the medicines and waited for Aastha to return but she didn't. He came down to look for her and saw her coming out from the kitchen. She didn't notice him. He was about to call out to her when she suddenly turned and went back into the kitchen.

Aastha remembered something. "Aai, I want to tell you something...!!" she said seriously. Anjali was curious to know what Aastha wanted to tell.

"What is it Aastha?" asked Anjali.

"Aai, I wanted to talk to you about Jyoti Tai...!!" said Aastha in almost a whisper. And she told everything that had happened.

Anjali was shocked and worried too. "What?! Jyoti ran away and we know nothing about it!!" Anjali was very worried for Jyoti.

"Aai, don't worry... She is safe now! And she is happy...! Aai-Baba, Ajju aur Siddharth hain na uske saath... Fikar karne ki koi zaroorat nahi hai... Okay?!" Aastha assured Anjali.

Anjali felt better but another thought troubled her. "Does Shlok know about it?!" she asked Aastha. Aastha nodded in "yes". Anjali was more worried now. "Uss ne Saheb ko bataya toh nahi?!" she asked.

"Nahi Aai... thankfully Shlok didn't tell anything to Baba...!" said Aastha.

Shlok, who was standing at the kitchen entrance, fumed with anger on seeing this. "She herself told me not to tell anything to anyone... and now she is telling it... that to to Mrs. Agnigotri?!!!" Shlok was very angry and was about to go in when he stopped at his place listening to Anjali say, "Saheb ko abhi pata nahi chalna chahiye...!! If Saheb knows about it, he will again send Jyoti to that hell...!! It was because of Saheb that Jyoti had to suffer all these years... But not any more!! I will not let Jyoti suffer any more...!!" said Anjali with all her determination.

Shlok was surprised and confused too. "Jyoti Tai had to suffer because of Baba?!! What is all this going on?!!" he thought. He saw Aastha consoling Anjali. "Aai, don't worry... We will make everyone know the reality!! And don't worry about Jyoti Tai... she is absolutely safe at my home." Aastha gave Anjali a glass of water. Anjali drank some and felt better. She quickly wiped her tears.

Shlok walked away in shock after seeing all this. He couldn't make out the meaning of all that he had just heard. "Why did Aastha tell everything to Mrs. Agnihotri?!! Even Jyoti Tai was scared of her. She too had specifically said that Mrs. Agnihotri should not know of this. Then why did Aastha tell her?!!! Doesn't Aastha care for Jyoti Tai?!! I know she does, she cares for her a lot!! It was Aastha who had revealed the reality of Abhay Bhauji and Sulbha Tai before we got married. But now why is she doing this?" Shlok became restless. "And what was Mrs. Agnihotri saying about Baba?!! How is Baba responsible for all the misery of Jyoti Tai?!! Oh God!!! I am not understanding anything!!" he was confused. And then he remembered Aastha's words... "Shlok... you blame your Aai for whatever she did to you and your life... But... But, whatever she did, she did it because Baba told her to do so...!!"

Shlok was breathing heavily. All this was too much to take in. "Is it true what Aastha was trying to tell me?!! Was it really Baba and not Mrs. Agnihotri that did all this?!!" Shlok wiped the beads of sweat on his forehead. "I need to know the truth!! Aaj toh main sach jaan kar hi rahunga...!!!"
