Chapter-14:

Thirukkural: (Chapter-65; Poem-649)

They will desire to utter many words, who do not know how to speak a few faultless ones.

"Ayesha where are you now?"

I asked her over the phone.

"In the fourth booth!" She replied.

"Anything you got there?"

"Not a thing so far!"

"Wait for me I'm coming!"

I had finished the enquiry on my fourth booth and called her as the rain started pouring.

We met at the booth and walked to the next and the last one, where he called Jaisar twice from.

The booth was somewhat in a remote area if we considered the others were nearly covering a circle.

We entered into the booth.

Once introduced ourselves and outlined the matter the booth owner said, "Sir, many faces come here daily! It's difficult to say who called on a particular day!"

After probing further the only thing he could say was the man if he was the one we were searching for might have come alone not in a vehicle!"

"Sir, our man is playing some good sports with us!" I said to Arjun," We encountered a factory three times while moving from one booth the other and we couldn't find nearly anything. The booth owner of that got- two- calls-from couldn't identify him for it was a peak hour of the day and he forgot him now completely. We can't count on him, I must say!"

Hence, we were still clueless on the suspect, who we thought as a peach.

Chottu gave Arjun a list and moved to the clip-board. He pinned a picture on it.

"Sir!", he started, "Miss. Banu. 14 years old!", Arjun looked the picture and felt a tug in his heart as he saw the innocent face smiling at him.

"Studying in ninth standard. She is missing for 3 days now." Chottu tried his best to keep voice steady.

"Her mother said she went to a shop to buy a milk pocket in the next street and was missing ever since."

Arjun could not think about what could have happened to her, he nodded ever slightly. Chottu got the message and pinned a list with descriptions under the picture and a second picture as well.

"Miss. Michael Roberts, 25 years old. Working in an IT concern. Missing for 2 days now. Her father said, she went for a friend's marriage and the friend said she didn't attend the marriage. Her mobile's switched off for two days from that evening, when she went out."

He pinned the next picture.

"Mrs. Shruthi Priyan, 27 years old. Missing from yesterday, working in hospital, as a duty nurse. Her husband Mr. Priyan said, she went for duty the yesterday night and didn't return. The hospital informed us that she came for duty, but asked for permission after an hour and left the hospital. They said, she got permission for she was ill, at least she said so!"

Arjun nodded and Chottu pinned one more picture on the board quickly and said," Mrs. Ranjani Sibi kumar, 28 years old. House wife, missing from yesterday with a baby girl, eight months old. The husband said they were fighting on some small matter yesterday morning and she left the house without informing him. When he returned from the office he couldn't find her in the house. The neighbors said they saw her that morning after he left for the office, and one tenant said he saw her near the auto stand yesterday evening with the child. And she was not normal, he could say!"

If it was this Ranjani he mentioned in his message then what about the child?' Arjun could not think further and he motioned to move to the next picture.

"Mrs. Chandrika Harikrishnan, 65 years old, Alzheimer patient, missing from yesterday. I don't think he has anything to do with her." He commented as though he could read Arjun's mind. " That's all for now, sir!"

That Afternoon:

As we had informed them in advance the enquiry went smoothly and secretly as well. Two of us were in the team ransacking the room after I checked for any hearing or monitoring devices planted in.

Arjun was in the reception area and Chottu did not even enter the gates.

We got nothing suspicious that could pump our adrenaline from the employees, except this one. Manu Bharath was working there as a cook.

One glance at him, Arjun smelt a rat, all right!

"You! Can you give me some water?" Arjun asked him casually as we were leaving the temporary questioning room arranged in the manager's room.

Manu Barath ran into the kitchen.

Arjun said the next moment, "I will get it in the kitchen!"

We came out and stood at the reception, suspected nothing.

"Sir! I don't know it can be of any use, but I thought I had to tell you. But one thing you must promise me that my name won't come out!"

Manu Bharath requested Arjun, once he saw him, having followed to the kitchen.

"Tell me!"

"Sir! I can't speak to you here. If anyone saw me talking to you that will make unnecessary talks. My shift is over in an hour. Let me come over to your place and talk!"

Arjun thought over his reasoning and said in his usual hard tone," Right! You know where to reach me!"

He returned to the reception and saw the sofa empty except for the couple with a child.

He approached the receptionist.

"Do you know where the man sitting over there, in the sofa went?"

"No sir!"

"Sir, he went out once you left for the kitchen!"

I interrupted them.

Arjun nodded and took his mobile.

"Chottu! Did you see the man with thick beard coming out?"

"Yes sir!"

"See if you can catch him!"

Arjun cut the phone and turned to the receptionist.

"What do you know about him?"

"Sir, he was here for an hour now! Said he was waiting for a friend who would arrive here to stay. I didn't note him leave, since I was on the phone just moments ago. And he ordered coffee, some-"

"Shree!"Arjun cut in and seemed somewhat tense.

I put my glove on and said, "Sir!"

I reached the cup.
